You're cheering for laundry making billionaires rich.

If your sports fan experience makes you miserable and you continue to make that choice, you're just a sucker.

What do they say about keeping politics out of sports? It's supposed to be an escape and supposed to be fun?

Being a diehard fan with no expectations/accountability for the franchise you cheer for is embarrassing.

Blindly supporting a franchise regardless of results makes you a bad fan, not a good one. The goal is supposed to be to win. If you tell ownership that results don't matter, that absolves them of that goal and indicates the goal is them making money, not winning.

The goal of sports is to entertain while making money. The owners and players do make ridiculous amounts of money. But each pro sports team represents an important piece of the economy for the major city in which they are based. They employ lots of people and bring visitors in continuously during the season. Those of us that are fans of a team that has been bad are free to make a choice and should enjoy the entertainment. It’s fun to watch these wonderful athletes. I mean, the Habs are bad and it was great fun watching them play last night. Very entertaining. It’s fun to look forward to your team someday being in the hunt. For some it’ll be a long time. Still fun to watch. Maybe. I still love being a die hard Habs fan. I enjoy supporting the team and all that represents.

In many ways when you support a team and go into the season knowing what to expect pretty much year in and year out like for example for the most part Buffalo, Columbus, and some others you can still enjoy the youth movement if your team is building the team in the correct way. Looking at the Buffalo Sabres they do seem to have some really good talent so the future should be bright down the road. The same can be said for the Habs as well.

I think it is harder for fans like for example Toronto, the team I have supported ever since I started watching hockey. They have had some really good teams and even had teams along the way that were said this was the year only to as you all know fail in the playoffs. That is really tough to see. However, at the end of the season there is only one team to hoist the Stanley Cup and it can't be your team all the time and most of the time it isn't.

I find this hilarious. Some are constantly complaining about the billionaires and the boomers.

I almost feel like you are calling yourself a sucker above.
Constant complaints about the NHL doing this, the billionaires doing that, the boomers picking a crappy Team Canada.

if EVERYTHING about the NHL makes you miserable - why do you still follow it?

The thing that actually matters. The ONLY thing worth caring about.

    The players on the ice.

    Certainly not a billionaire’s laundry.

Nothing more pure in hockey than cheering for each individual player on the ice, regardless of what silly little piece of laundry they’re wearing.

If you REALLY, ACTUALLY love hockey, you love the players on the ice, not all that other silly little bullshit you talk about.

    Wha?

I absolutely cheer for "laundry" as you put it. I've always cheered for laundry. I honestly don't understand anyone who says they cheer for anything other than laundry if they're a "fan" of a team. Makes no sense whatsoever. Sure, I've had favorite players too. But I've always hoped they'd be drafted by, traded to, signed by "my" team. That's why I follow it. If my team loses with guys I really like, that stinks. And if they ever win a Cup, I can assure you I won't give a damn that they did so with players A, B and C instead of players X, Y and Z.

Cheering for laundry is what generations of North American professional sports has been built on. Outside of North America, it's also why some fans literally won't wear even normal clothing that happens to be the same color as that of their team's primary rival.

I'm generally a fan of the sport too and love watching absolutely any game I can, no matter the level or geographic location. But yeah, I have that one pro team that I'll always, ALWAYS be pulling for over all others and hoping they win it all.

Speaking of laundry, just look at the amount of merchandise that is purchased in each market each year. Fans support the teams and they show it by purchasing tons of merchandise all the time. Sure certain Jersey sell more than others (mostly the Star Players) because those Jerseys are much more plentiful, but fans still support with Hats, Hoodies, T-Shirts, and all other sorts of merchandise as well for the teams they choose to cheer for. It is way more than just each player. I live in an area that doesn't have an NHL team. Meaning in my area there are fans for the Leafs, Habs, Bruins, Penguins, and even the Avs. Now other than the Leafs and the Habs which make up the majority of the fan base in my area, the other three teams are supported because of specific players (Marchand, Crosby, and Mackinnon). So I am not saying it doesn't happen that fans that are in out of market areas choose to support teams because certain players grew up in the area they live, but to say they are in the majority I don't see that at all.
