The deal is pretty solid. He's turning 33yrs old tho in August. Bit odd the 2nd yr but that's likely to get the dollar figure below 1mill.

Agreed. I definitely did not see enough this season to give him 2 years.

2yrs is so weird to get that done now. I don't get the rush for this.

He definitely doesn't deserve more than Spezza but he took way less than he could have. But Simmonds should have just gone with the same deal, or the Leafs should have said "Spezza set the standard. This is what our Vets will get"

Pass on Simmonds. Love the guy but he left it all in Philly. He is a shell of what he once was. He is always injured and seems out of place most times he’s out there. Only effective place is in front of the net on the PP, not sure you bring him back just for that. I’d rather give that spot to a younger guy that has some sand paper. Sorry Wayne.

He sucked this year, but for 900 per year it's basically a free option.

No. He's exposed if they go 4-4 and they'll need to expose him if they go 7-3 to meet draft requirements.

This is the forwards exposed rule:
* Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

So if tis is their protected list:
Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Kerfoot, Mikheyev, Engvall
Their exposed list is:
Spezza and Simmonds

This could be why they signed Spezza and Simmonds prior to the expansion to have players that can be exposed.
