DJ Smith manned the D-core and PK for the Leafs. The PK was actually decent, but could have been better.

Honestly, I felt like after the season, the Leafs needed 2 new assistants anyways.

rumours that Hiller will be leaving too.
Very subtle way of thinning Babcock's influences.
Chi did this with Quenville, but just fired his asst. coaches.

the replacement coaches will be very telling on the length of leash left on Babcock's tenure

    Leafs PR just tweeted this....

The @MapleLeafs announced today that the hockey club has hired Paul McFarland as an assistant coach.

The Maple Leafs also announced assistant coach Jim Hiller has been granted permission to explore opportunities outside the organization.

The polite way of saying "bye Hiller"

That's so weird. One assistant leaves so get rid of the bunch so the head coach doesn't have any of his guys left on staff... Awkward.

I believe it was they were gonna not re-sign DJ Smith (4yr deal was done this yr), so it's not like it was a "Oh well Smith left, so Hiller you're gone too". This is just the professional way of going a new direction then straight up firing.

    Then why announce this today?

His contract was signed June 16th, 2015 for a duraction of 3yrs, 11months, 7 days. Which would expire tmo (today's his last day I think, depends if today counts. Either his last day under contract, or first day as a FA)

They have another Assistant (Andrew Brewer) who expires the same time as Hiller.

well... it could be more awkward... they could fire them all from under Babcock.
Babs has said repeatedly he hopes all his asst coaches become head coaches one day.
this strategy is much more subtly shortening the leash.

Should also help recruit asst coaches - believing they can grow and move on to a HC gig elsewhere.

McFarland was Fla's PP coach I believe... so they're still needing a PK/D asst coach. Hopefully this results in that PP being able to change things up based on the PK they face. vs. rinse - repeat.

OK so why is he being given permission to seek other opportunities? If his contract is done they have no say in what he does next.

This makes less sense the more I think about it.

Today may be his last day under contract, so they would technically have to grant permission I guess?

Seems more like a waste of electricity to get that out to media people if all of these facts are true. It would be much more professional to just say the truth which is they don't intend to bring Hillier back.

maybe the Leafs were worried they were falling out of the news?

Hiller expected to join the Preds already...

Leafs grant permission so Hiller can sign with another team before another candidate swoops in and takes the position
