I don't. I think if they're one and done - it opens the conversation.

The problem is, the Leafs have developed faster than expected.
I agree, they need to win this series.
If they don't - next season Babcock will be under the microscope.

Next year is where I see expectations rising beyond winning a series 'growing the kids' - yadda yadda
If Tor has an early exit from the playoffs in 19/20 - Babs is done.

This year, they need to make noise

8yr, 6.25mill/yr deal signed in 2015. Only halfway through with a different GM but same president signing him. I don't think he's in much hot water even if he's swept. However, Dubas did have in his contract that he can fire Babcock if he wanted too even in Shanahan didn't want it.

But I would believe this is his last yr of total security. The 2019-2020 season would be where things get hairy as he'd be in the back half of his contract.

I don't see Babcock getting fired this year regardless of outcome. Reasons:

    1. Patience is key for this young team. Consistency is also important. Babcock brings alot to the table (calm, experience, leadership etc).

    2. The team has developed quicker than expected but I believe management will keep the long term view. A couple years ago no one was expecting a Stanley cup this season. Sure things change but stick to the plan, Babs is part of that plan.

    3. There was no catching Tampa this year. They had a record setting season in several ways (post cap eta).

    4. Boston is a really good team. Cup contender with tons of playoff experience and one of the best lines hockey (probably the best two way line). There's no shame in losing to them if it goes down that way.

    5. Large contract.

It should be a great series and only one team can advance. If the leafs lose, don't change too much. Firing Babcock would be like selling a great blue chip stock because of a poor quarter.

I think Dubas understands and thinks this way. I think...

I think Babcock's days are numbered.
They (Dubas and Babs) put on a good show for the media but I think in private they are more like Billy Beane & Art Howe from Moneyball.
Dubas is a progressive and his coach is not. Babs likes to think he's a progressive, but he's more old school than many believe. His comments about Matt Martin "keeping the flies away" was funny but also very telling and probably had Dubas rolling his eyes.
This was not his hire, and I think Shanahan will back Dubas over Babcock.

And, let's face it, although nobody is talking much about it, the Leafs regressed this year with a much better roster. Tavares was added without giving up any assets. And kids like Kapanen, Johnsson and Rielly showed they are not kids anymore.
So it seems odd to me that the team got worse in the standings.
More glaring than anything, this team seemed to get worse defensively as the season progressed. That's coaching.

My prediction: Leafs get handled easily by Boston, Dubas publicly gives Babs a vote of confidence in the year end presser, Leafs start slowly next year and are on the bubble. Babcock is replaced in early December.

Interesting thoughts. I still think if the Leafs get rolled in the 1st round, Babcock is gone this summer but that's me.

    I guess we'll find out.

I can't say I would shed any tears, even though Babs is the best coach this team has had since Quinn.

A series win and this whole conversation becomes a moot point

Dubas realized the potential of not seeing eye-to-eye with Babcock with him getting the ability to fire Babcock if he wanted written into his contract. I see that as telling on Dubas's foresight, and say what you will about that, but Lou Lamoriello didn't even get that privileged (Babs hired May, Lou hired in July) from Shanahan.

I don't think it happens this yr, but Dubas definitely set himself up to be able to do so.

Where did you get this information? I didn’t know about it, very interesting.

Some really good discussion on here regarding Babcock’s fate. If the Leafs are pushed aside in 4 or 5 games than I think it’s time we move on from Babcock. If the Leafs put up a battle but still loose in 6 or 7, than I still think it’s time for Dubas to seriously consider replacing Babcock this summer, although I think that is highly unlikely. Whatever happens, I expect Babcock to be back next year and given one final chance, full season or not. Of course if we get by Boston than he is safe. But a first round exit for the third year in a row should spell the end of Babcock in my opinion. Dubas will not be able to hold onto Sheldon Keene for so long. I won’t pretend to know much about Keefe, but I do know he’s Dubas’ guy and they have some history. I’d rather have a coach that sees eye to eye with Dubas and can properly adapt to a young roster and the new NHL than have a big name coach who butts heads with Dubas and is too stubborn to adapt.

@dusterDave I saw that reported back in December. I'll find the info after lunch though.

Everything I find that's about "Dubas firing Babcock" is all very recent. I can't find anything now. Dang

    Leafs practice lines:
    Hyman-Tavares-Marner
    Johnsson-Matthews-Kapanen
    Marleau-Kadri-Nylander
    Moore-Gauthier-Brown
    Petan, Ennis

    Rielly-Hainsey
    Muzzin-Zaitsev
    Gardiner-Dermott
    Marincin-Rosen

    Andersen
    Sparks

You read that right, Sparks. Hutch is away for personal reasons for now. Sparks says he's traveling to Boston with the team. Hutch's wife had a kid, that's the personal reason.

The Sparks story died already. The spotlight is on Andersen now!

Back-up goalie is irrelevant at this point. If Andersen goes down with injury it doesn’t matter if it’s Hutchinson or Sparks replacing him, Leafs are toast. But for the record, I’d hope it would be Hutchinson in there.
