My spreadsheet for next year, assuming Austin at 12 and Marner at 9, assumes Dermott steps up into the top 4 and they let Gardiner walk or trade his negotiating rights before July 1.
I just can't see them fitting in all 3 of AM, MM, and JG.
That model also assumes reasonable raises for Kappy and Andreas - both to Connor Brownish money..

Oh, and Marleau too... they have to something with that contract.
I'll go over it in my Capped article this week

at least Marleau only has one season left under contract.

I can see there being a huge push by Dubas to get Kappy under a contract ala - Arvidsson.

Leafs should be able to fill the bottom pair with Borgman/Rosen - they're looking close to ready, especially Rosen. Say goodbye Gardiner, unless he's willing to stay for the same or less.

Johnson, see Sam Bennett for best case scenario for $$. 1-2 year deal once again.
Either gonna be some cheap UFA's signed to fill the bottom of the roster or some rooks will get a strong look.

it's a puzzle, but one they've been planning for 3 years. They have two of the best cap minds in the business in Gilman & Pridham (he wrote the damn thing while working for the NHL office) They'll get it done.

they can always ship Marleau back to SJ for a pick. it's one place he would go, and if Tor ate some salary, SJ would def. take him.

You don't go through what you did with Nylander and not have a plan for how you'll be able to sign Matthews and Marner. Simple as that.

But YOOOO, that Matthews shot. Keep him out of the lineup for the final 2 weeks of the year to have him full of piss and vinegar (and health) going into the playoffs! I joke, but he's been unstoppable.

Nylander told a reporter at Sick Kids Hospital appearance today that he's playing Thursday.

Just saw that. A bit surprising to be honest. I thought for sure Babcock would hold him out until Saturday. I’m sure his ice time will start off low and increase gradually though.

I expect top line with AM34 & PP2... doubt they rock the boat and slide Kadri off right now - 16min & change?

My guess is that they will actually pull Kadri off of PP1. Nylander is more skilled, and that's why the PP is clicking, so he fits right in. He knows the players (except Tavares - tough life), and should be able to take over Kadri's high-slot role.

The bigger reason why I think Kadri gets pulled off the PP1 though, is that right now they're using thee centres. Babcock lamented that at the beginning of the season, and it hasn't really been addressed. So after the PP1 unit does its work, he has to toss out the fourth line centre, usually against an offensive line that was rested up. Having 2C and 2W on the PP1 unit gives him a lot more flexibility in terms of line changes around the PP, and it should help the second unit as well.

    Very good point.

Also, knocking off the rust in a home game vs Detroit is a lot easier than knocking the rust off in Boston. It's not like he's not healthy, so game action is the best way to get back into game shape. That's the way I think Babs is thinking.

Any chance we see Sparks tonight and keep Andersen fresh for Boston on Saturday?
