So I heard this morning that Nylander doesn't want to sign until Matthews and Marner sign.

So is his plan to sit out the entire season then? Because that's not going to happen.

I also heard Nylander is getting pushed by his dad to sign long term over a 2 yr bridge because of the looming lockout. If he signs a 2yr deal, he's and RFA and might not be able to play in Europe and get paid. But if he's under contract, he's likely pushing for a signing bonus for the lockout yr and get paid and go to Europe to play.

I'm not 100% sure on the details of "Can he play in Europe during a lockout without an NHL contract" but it sounds like the major reason why he wants a longterm deal is the lockout potential.

FWIW Brian Burke thinks Leafs are gonna sign him then trade him.

The guy who said he would have pulled his offer to Tavares for making him wait a half-hour? Surely not.

Burke did make a good point the other day.. Nylander & Gaudreau share the same agent. The night before the season started, Gaudreau all of a sudden dropped his demands and signed his extension. Oh look, Nylander's reaching the end of his camp & hasn't signed. We'll find out if this is an agent specific strategy come Tues/Wed.

I've said to people it's gonna be like JG situation, but I didn't know they shared the same agent. It's another thing that makes me think it's gonna happen near the 1st game.

    However:
    JG 2015-16 season:
79gp, 78pts - last yr of the rookie contract
    2016-17 season:
    72gp, 61pts - 1st yr of the new deal.

Just hope he doesn't have a "slump" like Gaudreau had after holding out and getting no pre-season and such.

    Here's your opening night roster:
    https://nhl.bamcontent.com/images/as...-file/file.pdf

Connor Carrick, McEhlliney, and Pickard placed on waivers to go from 26 players to 23.

    Notes though,
    - 13F, 8D, 2G
    - One more will need to be waived when Nylander signs, Prolly Marincin. Maybe Gauthier.

    Marleau-Matthews-Ennis
    Hyman-Tavares-Marner
    Brown-Kadri-Kapanen
    Johnsson-Lindholm-Leivo
    Gauthier

    Rielly-Hainsey
    Gardiner-Zaits
    Dermott-Ozhiganov
    Holl-Marincin

    Andersen
    Sparks

Right decision in my opinion going with Sparks over McEhlinney. I expect both of McEhlinney and Pickard to clear waivers but I think we lose Carrick. Decent piece for a rebuilding team like Ottawa, Montreal or Vancouver.

are the capitals satisfied with their backup position ? wondered if they'd be kicking tires on things ; maybe claim mcelhinney or pickard

Nylander's agent needs to sit down with him and say "look, they have all the leverage here, they'll make you wait until Christmas or longer. Are you REALLY willing to do that ? "

If Nylander ends up signing for $6M-$6.5M he will be missing out on $30,000+ per day that he isn?t signed. That is for an October-April pay period. I think he settles in the 11th hour.

McEhlinney had the better preseason (he was bad vs. Detroit mind you) but Dubas is on record saying he was going to make his decision based on the ?full body of work? between the two, not just a few preseason games. This is only a major story because it is in Toronto. I?d be satisfied with any of the three backing up Andersen. You do have to go with the guy that had phenomenal numbers in the AHL and is nearly 10 years younger than your other option. If Sparks pans out, fantastic. If not, he is easily replaceable.

    This is from CapFriendly:
If a RFA signs after the season starts, how is their cap hit calculated?
When a restricted free agent signs a contract after the NHL season has already begun, their cap hit for the first year is greater than the contracts annual average, and similarly the cap hit of the remaining years is less than that of the annual average.

A notable aspect of the following calculation is that the sum of the cap hit values is greater than if the contract was signed before season start (and used the normal AAV calculation; monetary value of the contract divided by the total years)

The cap hit of the years after the first year of the contract is calculated first:
Cap hit after the first year = (First year salary * season days remaining / total season days + contract value remaining) / contract years

The first years cap hit is then calculated:
First years cap hit = cap hit after the first year * total season days / season days remaining

    Example:
Hampus Lindholm of the Anaheim Ducks signed a $31,500,000 contract on Oct 27, 2016 in the 2016-17 season. There were 164 days remaining in the season on this date. The contract break down was as follows:
    2016-17: $3,000,000
    2017-18: $6,000,000
    2018-19: $6,750,000
    2019-20: $5,250,000
    2020-21: $3,750,000
    2021-22: $6,750,000
    Total: $31,500,000
    Annual Average: $5,250,000

The cap hit values are calculated as follows:
    Cap hit (2017-18 to 2021-2022) = ($3,000,000 * 164 / 180 + $28,500,000) / 6 = $5,205,556
    Cap hit (2016-17) = $5,205,556 * 180 / 164 = $5,713,415

The cap hit breakdown is therefore as follows:
    2016-17: $5,713,415
    2017-18: $5,205,556
    2018-19: $5,205,556
    2019-20: $5,205,556
    2020-21: $5,205,556
    2021-22: $5,205,556
    Total: $31,741,294
    Average: $5,290,216

The longer Nylander waits, the lower his annual average cap hit is from year 2 and on wards. Actually benefits Leafs the longer he waits.
