So says Darren Dreger on TSN’s Insider Trading. He’s not saying he thinks it might happen, he’s saying it’s done in all but the filing with the NHL stage.

The details are: Four years at just over $5.5 million in AAV. It’s front loaded and contains trade protection. Dreger does not mention this, but we should likely expect a lot of signing bonuses included in that “front loading”.

Because of the cap and tagging issues, don’t expect this deal to be announced until March 1 when tagging space increases.

I forgot about cap tagging. That makes a lot more sense now.

The $5.5 seems expected, but higher than it should be. I liked the $4.5M rumour I heard better - it also fit with what my projection model shows he's worth ~$4.6M.

I also read this a couple days ago but I have to admit I don’t know what it means or why they have to wait until March 1. Anyone care to explain?

$5.5M x 4 for Muzzin is fine with me.

Cap tagging applies to contract extensions. There's limits to how much cap space can be allocated in future years. Leafs already have a lot of future salary commitments with their existing contracts plus the LTIR guys.

Somehow in the rules the amount of space expands on March 1st.

The Tagging rule states a team can’t spend more on a future payroll than they currently have on their own and, as Dreger notes, teams lose space by going over the cap in the current year.

Also March 1st, the CBA opens up more space for "tagging" apparently. Which is why the March 1st date is being said.

Marchment didn't use his 6'4" frame like a 6'4" frame. He played like he was 5'10" it felt at times.

I know it's a small sample size but Marchment has 3hits in 4 games (0.75hits/game), Malgin has 148 hits in 184games (0.80hits/game)

Blake Coleman is only 5'10 180... If Malgin uses his 5'9" better than Marchment uses his 6'4" - the 7" difference won't matter.
With today's game, too much importance is still placed on size. Just as Marchand.
