Definitely not good for the top leafs all around. They were 6th at 23.1% last season loading up the top unit.

Im generally of a fix what isnt broken kinda guy. We'll see if they find success deploying in this way.

It was pretty obvious the Leafs net front presence on the PP was non-existent. Bam Simmonds goes in front. Thornton is still a wizard with passing, Matthews and Marner are obvious.

I kinda like that new top PP. Seems just more balanced. One of the big issues on the Leafs PP was when the PP ended. Using JT, Matthews, Nylander and Marner on the PP (and Hyman) left Kerfoot being the next center up against the opponents top offensive players for a shift. This helps that.

Anyone have any ideas as to why they aren't using their last taxi-squad spot? Engvall is still waiver-exempt and the AHL isn't starting up for a few weeks.

Might be an open spot for Dell.

That actually brings up a good point...

So I work on a military installation here in the US. I had Covid in August. My wife got it in December. The DOD said because it had been more than 90 days since I'd had it that they did not consider me immune any more so I had to quarantine from work for two weeks again. I wonder if the NHL has a policy like that.

That I haven't heard. NHL or any other sport.

I'm not sure there's enough evidence yet that it actually does make you immune and if it does.. does it make you immune to the other variant strains?

    Side note.
Matthews undertook a completely new training regime this off-season.
He hired the same trainer as Patty Kane did 2 years ago and well, we saw those results.
He lost 15lbs. cruising around at a clean 210 now.
He met or exceeded every training goal ahead of schedule.
Private chef & everything he put in his body could be sourced, including the food sources of what he ate had eaten.
his flexibility, strength, endurance, speed have all increased from previous years.

I love stories like this. Let's just say he put in an elite off-season. Dare we believe there's a whole extra level to his game?

I believe in the likely event Matthews goes supernova this season it would've happened anyway due to natural ascension + weak division. It will be difficult to attribute how much of that ascension was due to his new nutrition lifestyle.

Im optimistic he'll have a career year. Let's see how far he can take it.

If all that "improved lifestyle" is true about Matthews, I like it mostly because it means he has taken that next step towards super stardom. You gotta take your health in the offseason REALLY seriously now. I'm glad he's taken that mental step towards his next level, shows he's serious about hockey.

When he sat down with the trainer and listed all of his expected goals for the off-season the trainer asked which one's he wanted to achieve this off-season and what his timelines were for them.

His reply "All of them, now. I'll do everything you ask me to."
