I knew Pavelski had something ailing him. I didn't think of Heatley being inured. That might explain his poor play. I'm impressed with Boyle, and I knew Clowe had to be still hurting.

Wallin has signed with the Swedish Elite league so we don't have to worry about tacking him on. This leaves Boyle, Murray, Vlasic, and Demers as guys who played a significant amount of ice time this last season signed. Braun is an RFA so they can probably land him for still pretty cheap, and White is still to be determined. They need to sign another high 2nd tier defenseman if they can. I don't believe any top tier are available, but a high second would suffice for now. Unless they are able to trade for one. I don't like the idea of trading Clowe, but if they got a monster defenseman out of it, I might go for it.

EDIT: Braun is signed for this year. I didn't realize that Capgeek was already showing next years numbers. So thats 5 defenseman signed. Sign another big stud and then fill out the bottom two lines with the leftover few million and this team should be even better next year.

Based on my knowledge of the team, the 3 players I would be seeking out come July 1st are Laich, Bieksa, and Wisnewski. If those are not a go, not because I like him, but think he plays well in a puck possession team, is Kaberle.

Ok, I've run through some numbers on capgeek to see what might work for the Sharks this off-season. I realize that my numbers may be low for some players, but this is purely guesswork at best. This address some needs I think the Sharks have. One, I went for a defenseman, and 2 I went for a gritty winger who can play on the top line, can score, and provide that extra oomph to the atmosphere.

    FORWARDS
    Brooks Laich ($4.000m) / Joe Thornton ($7.000m) / Patrick Marleau ($6.900m)
    Dany Heatley ($7.500m) / Logan Couture ($1.241m) / Ryane Clowe ($3.625m)
    Torrey Mitchell ($1.366m) / Joe Pavelski ($4.000m) / Devin Setoguchi ($2.000m)
    Jamie McGinn ($1.025m) / Scott Nichol ($0.700m) / Kyle Wellwood ($0.850m)

    DEFENSEMEN
    Dan Boyle ($6.666m) / James Wisniewski ($3.500m)
    Douglas Murray ($2.500m) / Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m)
    Justin Braun ($0.875m) / Jason Demers ($1.250m)

    GOALTENDERS
    Antti Niemi ($3.800m) / Antero Niittymaki ($2.000m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,900,001; BONUSES: $587,500
    CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $99,999

I did this with the supposed cap and I tried to give some guys raises from their previous salaries, while dropping Nicols a little, because he's getting older. I don't know if a guy like Braun would go up much. I think there may be a trade here to free up even more cap space, but I'm not sure who will go.

I think McGinn only gets from 0.715M (his qualifying offer) to 0.75M but Wisniewski could get up to 4.5M since he's unrestricted.

I think Niittymaki has to go. They can't afford him and I believe some team would want him. Also, Setoguchi could go if they would get Laich.

Yeah, I think Seto is worth letting go to get Laich. If they trade Nitty, and bring up Stalock thats worth it I think to land Wisniewski. This seems doable to me to make them a better team.

Ok, since the rumor is out that the Sharks are in the mix for Robyn Regehr, I thought I'd do a quick capgeek game again and see if this could work for the Sharks, if the Cap goes up to 64 Million. This is possible, while giving some people raises and leaving others on the like Moore as a 7th defenseman, who could lose out to Petrecki. The thing is, I don't think this core would stay intact if Regehr came over via trade. My guess would be a draft pick and something like Setoguchi would be involved. Unless Calgary wanted one of our defenseman who is cheaper. Vlasic? I'm not sure on this. But I didn't finish it out as I have no clue who to expect to put on the bottom line other than Wellwood as he hasn't been mentioned as one of the non-tenured players from the bottom two lines. So if we look at the top 3 lines and defensive pairings, this could be a great squad, especially playoff time if everyone can stay healthy enough. Dobber himself said that if Heatley/Thornton had been healthy, they could have been Cup contenders. Imagine next year with this group.

Now with the news that CGY has asked Regehr to waive his no trade claus for Buffalo make make the previous post quite moot.

    Waaaaaa,

I go away for a week and the thread goes CRAZY. Thanks for the AWESOME insite TG. Can't say that I disagree with anything that you have thrown up here.

Jumping back to give my humble opinion......

    1. I really do not see the Sharks signing an offensive player of any significance. They were a solid 7 deep last season (Thornton, Marleau, Heater, Seto, Clowe, Pavelski and Couture). Seto is the only one of this group that is up for a contract and he is willing to take a discount to say as he has gone on the record saying as much. That being said, I am not sure how they let Seto go knowing that he is younger and has as much if not more potential than Laich. My prediction is 3.25 for 3 years for Seto

    2. The Sharks do not need another puck moving defensemen. Boyle is their man and Demers took some SOLID steps this last season to move into the 2nd PP unit QB. If one happens to fall into our lap, I am not going to complain but I seriously doubt that White will be coming back. What the Sharks DESPERATELY need is a shut down defensemen. Someone along the lines of a younger Scott Hannan. Someone that can be thrown onto the second D pair and take all the extra minutes that Boyle had to take last season. If they can get Boyle down to 22 minutes a game, he will be much better rested and will be much more of an offensive threat. Wisneiski, although a great idea, does not fit the need that this team has. Bieksa is going to cost way too much money. They need to shore up the back end and get some guys in front of Niemi. As it stands today, if the season started tomorrow, the pairings would be:
    Boyle-Murray
    Demers-Vlasic
    Braun-Moore

Sign a shut down guy, Vlasic drops to the third line and Moore rides the bus. And no, Regher is not what I have in mind at all. Even if there are rumors.

The other area of supreme need on this team is a fourth line that is gritty and can be used to kill penalties. I loved Scotty Nicol and I wish that they had brought him back but there are so many defensive minded forwards available in this draft class that the Sharks should have no problem picking up a couple of guys that will kill penalties and deliver a beating to the opposing teams top lines. Was impressed at times with Eager but I felt like he was in the dog house a little too much. Kyle Wellwood really did not impress me much so I would not mind seeing him go elsewhere. So really, there is a lot of room to shore up the defensive side of the puck from the forwards end.

Overall, and I know this has been said before, I really don't think the Sharks are that far off. If they were disiplined in game 3 and did not take back to back to back 5-3 hits, I really think they come out just fine but that, in my mind, was the straw that broke the camels back. Shore up the back end and this team can go a long way. And if you ARE going to make wholesale changes, trade Heatley, don't let Seto go.

I would trade Heatley too as long as it was for a good return. I think the Sharks were close and I want a solid shutdown defenseman. One that is quicker than Murray to be exact, lol. I love Murray, just hate his slow legs.

Seto resigns for three years, $9 MM. I can't believe I was so close. Haha

And trade heater for cap relief. We will need it for Logan next year.

Heatley, would have to accept a trade. Easier said than done.

They may consider seto or clowe expendable before finding a trade partner.

Sharks acquire Brent Burns and 2nd roudn pick (2012) for Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle, and 1st round pick (2011, 28th pick).

Sharks get the top 4 defenseman they've been looking for, but I think they gave up just a little too much for it. I was excited about Coyle coming up in a couple years. I think this may all change once I see how well Burns plays with us and if we can sign him beyond this year for a decent cap hit.

As TG stated, Burns is now a Shark. In a one year bubble, I absolutely LOVE this trade. He is more then I ever could have hoped for in a trade. We get the shut down guy that we need but an awesome offensive player on the back end as the icing on the cake. Easily a top pairing defensemen that we can throw into a second line pairing and really help to take some of the load off of Dan Boyle. The Sharks defense just went from servicable to pretty darn good. I am not going to say great but I think that it is now very good and if this was the corps that we needed to go into the season with, I would be ok with it.

I do agree that we gave up some flexibility in letting Seto go but I am ok with that. McGinn will be back and he can slot into a top 6 roll. We can also move Pavelski up to that second line but it seemed like he had some really good chemistry with Mitchell last season. That line has all the makings of being a true shut down line with the ability to score. Desjardins will also be back and he will be the center for the fourth line. This is a pretty solid center group (with Couture and Thornton of course) and one that all play responsible defense and work hard in their own zone. The loss of Coyle is where it stings me. He looked awesome last year. But you have to give something up to get something. Bottom line for me, if Burns stays healthy and we resign long term (thinking $5MM per range realistically but Bieksa will set the price), then this trade is an awesome move on the part of the Sharks. If Burns walks after next year, I am not going to be happy at all.

The lines as I see them right now

    Marleau - Thornton - Heatley
    Clowe - Couture - McGinn
    Mitchell - Pavelski - ??
    ?? - Desjardins - ??

    Boyle - Murray
    Burns - Vlassic
    Demers - Braun

    PP1 - Marleau - Thornton - Heatley - Burns - Boyle
    PP2 - Clowe - Pavelski - Couture - Braun - Demers

So whats next? Well if the Sharks resign McGinn for $1MM and Dejardins for $750K (both extremely reasonable), the Sharks will have 3 forward slots open and $7MM+ of cap room to work with. I would not want to commit to anyone long term right now because having that cushion is going to be key next year with Burns and Couture both coming up for extensions (Burns - +1.5MM-2.0MM, Couture, the same for a total of +$3MM and +$4MM) but it definitely gives them some wiggle room. I would like to see them sign at least one defensive spe******t. Someone that can really work the penalty kill and be the most responsible forward on the ice when they are out there. Someone for the fourth line. Maybe sign another defensemen, maybe a Brent Sopel type player. A $2-2.5MM one-year cap hit and someone that you can plug in to the third line pairing to help shut down the opposition (sensing a theme here). That should leave the Sharks with around $3MM-$4MM ($5MM if Braun goes down to Worster) to play with to get two more players into the mix. I have no doubt that this will be plenty the way that Doug Wilson works his magic.

Yeah, I think this could work out quite well for us. I still think that Heatley will play with Couture next year as they play well together. So then I'm curious as to who plays on the top line with Marleau and Thornton. I think your point about keeping some cap room is a must. We need to keep Couture and I'm sure Wilson knows what he's doing. I'd love to see another defenseman signed that is good shutdown, but has just about zero offensive upside, as long as they can make a decent pass out of the zone, I'm happy.

The Sharks are looking better already and this could be really good. Perhaps McGinn will be the lucky dog to play on the top line if Heatley plays with Couture again next season.
