Default [February 14th] OHL Weekly Ramblings

Above: Christian Thomas of the Oshawa Generals

    - Top Drafted Defensemen. Hockey Future has released the Top 10 OHL Drafted Defensemen . Toronto prospect Jesse Blacker sits at #2 on the list only behind Nashville's Ryan Ellis. If you like this list, then check out the QMJHL Top Drafted Defensemen too

    - Ryan Murphy is the latest profiled OHLer over at the "OHL Prospects Online Articles" thread

-Columnist for Junior Hockey, Sunaya Sapurji, has a very interesting story on Toronto Prospect D'Amigo. Check it out. "Season of Hard Knocks for D'Amigo"

    - Speaking of Jerry D'Amigo, he now has 3 goals, 7 assists and 10 points in 6 OHL Games. He struggled last game against the Soo Greyhounds with a -3 rating but still managed to record an assist in the game

    - Canada Winter Games Hockey. The Canada Winter Games are underway and there is not a shortage of OHL scouts. Check out the 20 OHL Prospects article on the OHL website

    - Clinching Playoff Births. The OHL season is nearing the end and teams are starting to clinch playoff births. The latest teams to clinch are Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, Ottawa 67s and Niagara Ice Dogs in the Eastern conference. In the Western Conference, there has been no teams yet to secure a playoff birth. Look for the Owen Sound attack to clinch soon.

    - Games Remaining. The OHL teams play 68 regular season games. Two teams (Mississauga, Belleville) have 16 games remaining, eight teams have 15 games remaining, eight teams have 14 games remaining and two teams have 13 games remaining (Owen Sound, Erie).

    - DY's Players of the Week: . The OHL has not released its Player of the Week but any of the following players will likely be considered for this award.

    • F Christian Thomas (Oshawa Generals' ) is the son of former NHLer Steve Thomas. Christian scored three goals and six assists in the Generals' 3 wins this past week
    • F Ryan Strome (NIagara IceDogs) - Strome is continuing his strong season with 7 assists in three games (3-0-0) last week. Strome moved him into the OHL Scoring Lead passing Tyler Toffoli.
    • F Mark Scheifele (Barrie Colts) - The rookie from Barrie is doing extremely well and last week he had 4 assists in two games which moved him into 3rd place among rookie scorers with 16 goals and 45 assists for 61 points. Scheifele only trails rookies Nail Yakupov (Sarnia) and top 2011 prospect Alex Khokhlachev (Windsor)
    • D Ryan Murphy (Kitchener Rangers) - Draft eligible Murphy recorded 4 goals and 4 assists and took over the defenseman scoring lead from Ryan Ellis
    - DY's Yakupov Watch.
    • As most of you might know, I live close to Sarnia and they are the OHL team that I follow the most so I do have a bias towards providing you with Sarnia Sting information. However, Nail Yakupov is an extremely rare talent and will go Top 5 (should be Top pick) in the 2012 NHL Draft so providing you with his updates will certainly help you guys too.
    • My favourite 2012 prospect Nail Yakupov (Sarnia) had a tough week as Sarnia went 1-2-0. Yakupov failed to record a single point in any of the three games. Surprisingly, Yakupov continues to post impressive +/- ratings as he was only -1 in the three games where Sarnia was outscored 19-6.
    • In their two defeats, Sarnia lost 7-1 to Kitchener and 8-0 to Windsor. To add to Sarnia's struggles, Yakupov left yesterdays contest after being hit by Windsor's Ryan Ellis. It appears that Yakupov did not have the puck, Ellis left his feet and there was some incidental contact to Yakupov's head. More information to come.

    • Check out this AWESOME Yakupov Video ("Yakupov, One on one") released just minutes ago by Terry Doyle

    - Another Sensational OHL Rookie. Check out Adam Kimelman's article "Danish Prospect has Generals in Contention" over at NHL.com. Nicklas Jensen currently sits fourth in OHL scoring.

From Patrick King (of Sportsnet), Who's hot, who's not? of the CHL

    Ontario Hockey League

    Hot team: Niagara IceDogs
The IceDogs are now the league's hottest team after Owen Sound saw its eight-game win streak snapped in overtime. The IceDogs won their last seven straight games and trail the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors by four points for first in the Central Division, Eastern Conference and overall league standings.

    Cold team: Kingston Frontenacs
It's hard to fathom the Frontenacs could have a worse loss than their 8-6 defeat to rebuilding Barrie on Feb. 5, but they took it to another level last week. The Frontenacs, losers of four straight, were embarrassed 10-3 by Erie on home ice on Sunday. There's not much time left for the Frontenacs to right a sinking ship before the playoffs begin.

Game of the week: Mississauga St. Michael's Majors vs. Kitchener Rangers, Friday
The MasterCard Memorial Cup hosts will head west to take on the Rangers in a game that will be televised on Rogers Sportsnet. The Majors are as good as advertised this season, but are hearing footsteps from the league's hottest team in Niagara. Meanwhile, the Rangers received a shot in the arm offensively when the Toronto Maple Leafs sent Jerry D'Amigo to the Rangers on Feb. 3. Kitchener trails surging Owen Sound by seven points heading into the week for top spot in the Western Conference. The game will give each team a measuring stick on another elite non-conference opponent, but will be just as vital in each team's race.

    Canadian NHL teams' OHL prospects:

Jerry D'Amigo, Toronto (Kitchener) - drafted 158th overall in 2009
D'Amigo is getting used to junior hockey's busy schedule after being sent down from the American Hockey League recently. He scored once and picked up five assists with a plus-2 rating in four games last week. D'Amigo recorded at least one point in each of his first six career OHL games.

Jarred Tinordi, Montreal (London) - drafted 22nd overall in 2010
Tinordi failed to pick up a point after registering two assists in each of the last two weeks. He was a minus-1 in three games last week, but did exhibit his physical side. Tinordi delivered a bone-crushing hit on Windsor's Alexander Khokhlachev in a game seen on Rogers Sportsnet.

Greg McKegg, Toronto (Erie) - drafted 62nd overall in 2010
McKegg's impressive production continued last week, but not at the same pace as January. He had two assists in three games with a plus-2 rating. McKegg's last goal came on Jan. 28 when he scored a hat trick in London, a span of seven games without lighting the lamp.

Alex Friesen, Vancouver (Niagara) - drafted 172nd overall in 2010
Friesen may have turned the corner after a somewhat quiet couple of weeks. He had a goal and two assists in three games, recording his first multi-point game in seven games over Barrie on Friday. He is now four points shy of tying his career-best single season point total of 60.

    Default Happy visentine day!

    HAPPY VISENTINE DAY!

Niagara IceDogs netminder Mark Visentine (Pheonix Coyotes) has been named the OHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The first goaltender to win the award this season, Visentin posted a 3-0-0-0 record including one shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 0.67 and save percentage of .973
Congrats on being the first goaltender PLAYER OF THE WEEK!
Visentin continued the strong play that earned him Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week honours one week ago beginning Wednesday with a 24-save performance as first star of a 3-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs. He then earned his fourth shutout of the season on Friday night when he made 26 saves to blank the Barrie Colts as third star of the game. Visentin narrowly missed out on a bid for his fifth shutout of the season on Sunday afternoon in Brampton. He made 21 saves as first star of the contest allowing just one Battalion goal with 28 seconds to play in the 3-1 win.
The WJC looks to have boosted Visentines confidence as of late.

Visentin, an 18-year-old from Waterdown, ON, currently holds the league’s best goals-against-average and save percentage at 2.18 and .927 respectively. The 2010 first round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes has a 23-4-2-4 record and is currently on a six-game winning streak and remains unbeaten in his last 19 games since November 19.
That is a RIDICULOUS record and DAMN impressive stats for a goaltending in the highest scoring league of the CHL
