Honestly, with Ellis and Provorov in front of him I think this is a good situation for Risto. He was mis-cast for years in Buffalo. On a 2nd or 3rd pair he's going to be right where he should be and will give the FLyers some really good depth on the blue line. He's got one year left at $5.4 - the 1st rd pick sucks, but this could be a decent deal for Philly. I think some GMs are quite comfortable punting on this year's draft for a number of reasons, as this trade shows.

GMs are comfortably punting on most year's drafts because they know they won't be with the team to suffer the consequences.

Buffalo's been punting the draft for years, and they even kept their picks.

I still have a rail available to run Fletcher out of town on. I can't wait until this clown is gone and we can get on with the rebuild again.

Yes, I'm calling 2019-20 the high point.

Let's all welcome Martin Jones as the latest signing!

If it helps get rid of Fletcher, I like it.

Flyers banged up already. I feel bad for Wade Allison, he was hurt so often in the NCAA it seemed and it looked like he could have a great upcoming season only to get hurt in the final game of their rookie tournament. On the other hand, I was trying to trade for him yesterday in a dynasty league and all my proposals were rejected so I may have dodge a bullet there.

#Flyers say Kevin Hayes underwent abdominal surgery today and will miss 6-8 weeks.
    Giana Han@giana_jade

"He's going to be out for a while," Alain Vigneault said of Wade Allison. "When they say an undetermined amount of time, that means it's going to be a while."

Allison had a strong developmental camp / rookie camp before hurting himself in the final rookie camp game.

Sam Morin also out 6-8 weeks with a knee injury.

Wow... well, good news for those of us holding Morgan Frost.
Two players whose departure opens up TOI.

Charlie O'Connor (Great PHI beat report) tweeted that AV says Hayes felt something in his groin. Then surgery.
Hayes departure probably means that Giroux shuffles back to C2 for the time being.
    I foresaw a battle for a 3rd line wing spot between Frost/Allison.

Seems smart that PHI signed up Derick Brassard to be depth C, with already having Laughton & Thompson (& Patrick being moved out).
All signs pointed towards them wanting to wing with Frost (or maybe they knew Hayes was gimpy).

Either way, PHI has good depth and hopefully Frost gets some NHL time to start season.

The Morin injury is interesting as well.
He was slated as PHI 7thD... but now they can either:
    a) Promote Zamula for spot starts
    b) Go with shitty vet Adam Clendening for patchD
    c) Go with shitty vet Nick Seeler for patchD.

Hopefully we get to see some Zamula.

Isn't Sam Morin a forward? I thought he switched to wing last year.

    Also, Zamula!!!

PHI tried Morin at F to start last year...

    Diidn't work.

Demoted him to AHL, moved him back to D.
Brought him back up in late March at D... he did OK.
    https://www.yardbarker.com/nhl/artic...16481_34485422

I think he stated that he didn't like F... but was willing to try it only because the organization wanted to try him out.

Flyers are on the ice tomorrow (Sep 23) morning, so we'll know first trial at lines soon enough.
    My guess:

    Farabee - Couturier - JVR
    Konecny* - Giroux* - Atkinson
    Lindblom - Laughton - Frost*
    Brassard - Thompson - Aube-Kubel
Extras: Bunnaman, Laczynski (*possibly new signee Mayhew, if he has a good camp)

    Hunches:
*Giroux at C2 (to cover Hayes)
    *Konecny slides over to LW
*Atkinson stays on RW (swap in for Voracek)
*Frost gets 3rd line wing (slated prob for Allison)
*Brassard plays everyday on 4th line wing until roster is more healthy

Some twitter info on Giroux's contract situation & what he says, from Charlie O'Connor:

    Charlie O'Connor

Giroux confirms that they're going to hold off on discussing a new contract until after the season.
Says that he's had some good talks with Chuck about it, but it's not something he's focused on at the moment.
He's obviously going into the last year of his deal.

This doesn't bother me, because here's how I think this works for PHI, if it's possible/allowed.
    1. Giroux waits until July 2nd or 3rd... and signs TWO deals.
2a - the first deal is a one-year deal for 2022-2023. This is at some low-amount, that gives PHI ability to met their cap. Shouldn't be hard, as the team has no major RFAs to extend. They will need to sign 3D, as only Provorov, Ellis, and Sanheim are under contract beyond 2022.
2b - the second deal can be an extension for 2023-on. If Giroux were to agree to some "underpayment in 2022-2023" then PHI could make it up on this contract. The reason this works better, is that JVR's $7m comes off the book in summer of 2023, and that's when PHI has funds to give out a bigger deal to Giroux.

We shall see... but that's my speculation on why Giroux is comfortable not needing an extension NOW. (because Fletcher prob explained it would be difficult to do with JVR's $7m blocking flexibility).

PHI cap situ. See Giroux contract ending 2022, JVR contract ending 2023.

Bit of a shocker for news coming from PHI... apparently Morgan Frost was sent to AHL ("cut") today.
He had spent most of preseason at C2, centering Farabee and JVR.
I guess something was off there.

I'd expect now to see Scott Laughton push up to temporarily fill C2 (with Hayes out long-term)
And, by current roster, Jackson Cates look likes a front runner to fill Laughton's wing spot in the bottom six.

    Mercy. (shaking head)
Hoping this is PHI just not wanting to rattle his confidence by sending him out with C2 expectations.

There is absolutely a chance of putting Giroux there. He is very good at faceoffs.

I am hoping that this isn't bad news about Frost, but I'm in stereotypical super-negative Philadelphia fan mode when it comes to the Fletcher-Vigneault Flyers at this point.
