WTF????? I just landed Howard in a trade the other day!!!!!!

Can't even pick up Nabokov either. When does he get put into the Yahoo! database?

I would assume once the signing is official and then I believe he would get placed on waivers in Yahoo. That's how MA Bergeron worked.

As a Detroit fan I'll address a few things.

    1) Howard is fine and starting tonight.
    2) Howard has been inconsistent at best since before Thanksgiving. Partly because of the defense, partly because Howard just hasn't been as good as last year.
    3) Osgood might not be back 'til mid-march, he was inconsistent again and he'll be close to 39 coming off of a hernia surgery, so his career might be over.
    4) If Nabokov somehow clears waivers he could be an insane insurance policy in case Howard won't sign for a reasonable amount or just in case he can't sustain a consistent play.

Something just doesn't make sense in all of this. Nabby has been awful in the playoffs over the years, had terrible stats this year in the KHL and this is the goalie they want to help lead them to the playoffs?

    I don't buy it.

Nabokov will definitely get scooped off waivers unless he signs a multi-year deal.

But man am I excited. This is why I've saved my #1 WW spot in my keeper waiting for a deal like this to come through. The second Yahoo adds him, I'm putting in a claim even with the solid goaltending I've got.
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

Where are you getting this from? Nabokov is likely to be signed as a backup since MacDonald won't hack it. Howard is still the #1.

Anyone care to speculate as to the strategy behind this move?

    EDIT: Thanks Heaton, makes sense.

Osgood might not be able to come back, Howard has been inconsistent, MacDonald isn't an NHL goalie and Nabokov is available and worth a shot.

The rumours were that Nabby wanted something ridiculous like 4 mill a year. If they sign him pro-rated for this year, it will be about 1.8-1.9 mill, but if they sign him long term it makes no sense.

Why would another team wait to scoop him off waivers? Why not just outright sign him if their interested in him?

This is Ken Holland, not Brian Burke. Odds are they'll sign him to a heavily incentive laded contract where they can push the bonuses to next season if he hits them. If Osgood is planning to retire, I could see a 2 year contract with little to no risk.

From Nabokov's perspective, this situation just shows how bad his decision to go to the KHL was. If he is claimed off waivers, he will now probably end up with a team he wouldn't have considered playing for when he was a UFA last summer.

I doubt he will sign for more than the reminder of this year. If he signs for 2-3 years, he takes the risk of being claimed by a crappy team and having to play for them for the reminder of his career.
