Default #87 Crosby versus #8 Ovechkin

At this moment in time, Crosby and Ovechkin are currently tied at 571 career regular season points (314th All Time)

I thought it was pretty interesting.

    Crosby's Career Reg Season Tallies
    409 GP
    215 Goals
    356 Assists
    571 Points
    +66
    385 PIM
    65 PPG
    3 SHG
    25 GWG
    1389 SOG
    1.40 Pt/Game

    Ovechkin's Career Reg Season Tallies
    435 GP
    283 Goals
    288 Assists
    571 Points
    +75
    334 PIM
    93 PPG
    4 SHG
    45 GWG
    2333 SOG
    1.31 Pt/Game

    Crosby's Playoff Totals 62GP 30G 52A 82P (1.32 P/Gm)
    Ovechkin's Playoff Totals 28GP 20G 20A 40P (1.43 P/Gm)

Crosby clearly has more playoff points and hardware than Ovechkin but it is pretty cool to see them tied at 571 career points.

    Interesting rundown!

    First impressions:
    1) Holy carp! Crosby has more penalty minutes.... I would have bet the otherway.

    2) The reg season / post season ppg numbers seem to contravene the prevailing sentiment with Ovi being the more productive in the post season and Crosby having the regular season (what about the whole 'the Caps light up the regular season and disappear in the playoffs' theory).

    3) These two ain't done with scoring by a long shot.

    Very interesting comparison.

Hard to believe how dominant Crosby has been this year as opposed to ovi though.

Let's see how January goes...hopefully Jan 1st will be enough inspiration for Ovechkin to put up some 'Crosby type numbers'...cant remember the last time I said that.

This is the last time you will see that - Crosby will continue to out-pace Ovechkin, career wise. OV may win a season or two, but IMO in 12 years there will be no comparison.

What a ridiculous statement. Sorry man, but 40 games (half a season) doesn't dictate the next decade. Crosby and Ovechkin will always be neck and neck. One might have the edge (crosby) but the other won't be too far behind.

Agreed. He's just the better player in every aspect.

Just to throw a few more numbers at this:

Since the Olympic Break in Feb 2010:

-Crosby has 91 points in 56 games for a pace of 1.63 points per game.

-Ovechkin has 59 points in 55 games for a pace of 1.07 points per game.

I agree with Dean Youngblood in that this a very small sample size and it is hard to make sweeping statements this early. But I can say that I think Crosby is the better player. But then again, I said it last year and the year before that as well.

Also, Remember that Crosby is 2 years younger than Ovechkin AND he has less games played. So once Ovechkin is retired at 34 from knee injuries, Crosby will still be going strong in his 40's.

I rather own Ovechkin but in a long term keeper..Crosby's playmaking capacity and less abrasive style of play is more conducive to longevity and in turn will keep him in the elite of the elite for longer than in the case of Ovechkin...I still think Ovechkin is the superior option of the two and will burn brightest at his respective peak....biggest anomaly in those stats is the SOG, Ovechkin has Crosby by 1000 which is absurd...didn't realize it would be that big of a gap between the two after only 5 years in the league

I don't think that SOG gap will continue to widen at the same pace. During this and last years, Crosby has taken significantly more shots - and goals of course.

Hey, I hope you're right, I own Ovechkin and would love to see him stay even or better than Crosby. Only time will tell I guess, but I stand by my opinion. I'm sure the Ovie vs Crosby debate will continue and we will discuss again in the years to come........

I thought it was pretty interesting.

    Crosby's Career Reg Season Tallies
    409 GP
    215 Goals
    356 Assists
    571 Points
    +66
    385 PIM
    65 PPG
    3 SHG
    25 GWG
    1389 SOG
    1.40 Pt/Game

    Ovechkin's Career Reg Season Tallies
    435 GP
    283 Goals
    288 Assists
    571 Points
    +75
    334 PIM
    93 PPG
    4 SHG
    45 GWG
    2333 SOG
    1.31 Pt/Game

    Crosby's Playoff Totals 62GP 30G 52A 82P (1.32 P/Gm)
    Ovechkin's Playoff Totals 28GP 20G 20A 40P (1.43 P/Gm)

Crosby clearly has more playoff points and hardware than Ovechkin but it is pretty cool to see them tied at 571 career points.
good stuff! nice post... It'll definitely be a fun era to watch. These guys are both incredible talents, and great for the game.

I do wonder what you mean by "Crosby clearly has more playoff points and hardware than Ovechkin" though. I mean, outside of the stanley cup, crosby has no "playoff hardware..." So this seems like a bizarre way of putting it... If you meant to say more hardware in general (not just playoff hardware), then that's incorrect, as I'm pretty sure that Ovie actually has more trophies than crosby at this point.

    EDIT:
    Ovechkin has:
    Calder Memorial Trophy: 2006
Lester B. Pearson Award/Ted Lindsay Award (Most Outstanding Player as voted by peers): 2008, 2009, 2010
    Hart Memorial Trophy: 2008, 2009
Art Ross Trophy: 2008 (112 points)
Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy: 2008 (65 goals), 2009 (56 goals)
    9 total

    Crosby has:
Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy: 2010 (51 goals)
    Olympic Gold Medal: 2010
    Stanley Cup: 2009
Art Ross Trophy (Leading Scorer): 2007
Lester B. Pearson Award/Ted Lindsay Award (Most Outstanding Player as voted by peers): 2007
    Hart Memorial Trophy: 2007
    6 total

Not sure if you count team trophies (olympics and stanley cup) as being worth more, but by my count crosby's still a little behind in the trophy category.

I mean hell... in 2008, Ovechkin made a clean sweep, collecting all four of the major trophies (art ross, hart, richard, and Pearson/Lindsay award).
