Default Capitals vs Rangers 1/24/11 Game Recap

    Capitals 1
    Rangers 2 (SO)

Once again the Capitals failed to earn two points during regulation then lost to the Rangers in a shootout. The victor of all three games against the Rangers have now been decided in shootouts.

The first goal of the game was scored by Matt Hendricks(7) in the second period, assisted by Marcus Johansson(6) and Scott Hannan(7). The assist by Hannan was his first point as a Washington Capital. The Hendricks goal was unanswered until the third period when Marian Gaborik(16) scored off of assists by Brian Boyle(9) and Sean Avery(18).

Washington did a great job of staying out of the penalty box and only went short handed once in the first period and then again in the third period. Alex Ovechkin took a penalty for diving in the third period but it was offset by Brandon Prust also receiving two minutes for holding. Washington was out-shot by the Rangers 28-17 in regulation, and only surpassed the Rangers in shots on goal in the overtime period 6-1 bringing the total shots on goal to 29-23. While the Capitals have done a better job of shutting down the oppositions offense, they will not be able to win in regulation with only 17 shots on goal.

Braden Holtby played a phenominal game in the net during regulation and overtime. Holtby stopped 28 shots and allowed only one goal with a .966 SV%. The shootout was not as successful for Holtby who had never been in an NHL shootout. Holtby was lured out of the crease then caught out of position after hesitations by Rangers shooters on two of the shots.

    Shootout results:
    WSH Ovechkin - Save
    NYR Wolski - Goal

    WSH Hendricks - Goal
    NYR Zuccarello - Goal

    WSH Backstron - Goal
    NYR Boyle - Miss

    WSH Johansson - Save
NYR Anisimov - Goal - Game winner

Mike Green was the ice time leader for the Capitals with 29:19, including a team high 3:32 of power play time. Green also had one shot on goal, one blocked shot and two hits. Alex Ovechkin had just over twenty-four minutes of ice time including 3:15 on power plays. Ovechkin also had 6 shots on goal, two penalty minutes, and two hits. Matt Hendricks finished the game with one goal, plus-1, three hits, 4 shots on goal, and 15:27 total ice time. John Erskine led the team with five hits. John Carlson blocked the most shots for the Capitals, preventing 4 shots.

Mike, please let MP85 know that if he doesn't show up to tonight's game (on the scoresheet) then he's GONE off of my roster. Clearly Perreault only reacts to scratches and call ups so maybe my threat will help him get rolling.

I already told him that Monday night when I ran into him, John Carlson, and Braden Holtby after the game. He seems to think that he will not be sent back down to Hershey, but with BB you never know.

Default Capitals vs. Thrashers 1/25/11 Preview

Washington Capitals (27-14-9) vs. Atlanta Thrashers (23-19-9)

    Capitals on the road: 11-9-3
    Thrasher on at home: 11-9-5

    Last 10 games:
    Capitals: 4-2-4
    Thrashers: 3-4-3

Tonight is the sixth and final meeting of the season between the Capitals and the Thrashers. The Capitals have won two games and the Thrashers have recorded the win in three games.

Matt Hendricks continues to be a dominate force for the Capitals with goals in the previous two games and three goals during the month of January. Hendricks has scored the first goal of the game three times this season, and is tied with Brooks Laich for the lead.

Scott Hannan who scored his first point as a Capital on Monday night with an assist against the Rangers, will play his 800th game tonight. He has played more games in the NHL than all of the Capitals active defensemen except for Tom Poti who has played 808 games.

Nicklas Backstrom has scored a point in ten of the last fourteen games and is the third fastest Capitals to reach 300 points. While Backstrom has struggled to score goals over the last twenty-plus games, he continues to be a key player in the first line for the Capitals and has tallied 34 assists.

Semyon Varlamov was the first goalie off of the ice at the morning skate today in Atlanta. It looks like Holbty will take to the bench to backup Varly. Matt Bradley was also on the ice for the morning skate. He has been out for several weeks with a broken finger. It is unknown if he is expected to play tonight.

The Capitals need to use tonight to get the power play going. The Thrashers are ranked 29th in the NHL in penalty killing. The Capitals have been struggling on the power play and need to work hard to remain out of the penalty box. The Capitals penalty kill has been excellent as they have been able to kill twenty-two of the last twenty-three short handed situations (95.7%). The Capitals are currently ranked second in the NHL for penalty killing.

    Injuries:
Matt Bradley - broken finger -possible for tonight, but most likely returning after the ASG

Alex Semin - lower body injury - returning after the ASG
    Eric Fehr - seperated shoulder
Tom Poti - upper body injury
Michal Neuvirth - lower body injury (groin) - day-today
Tyler Sloan - assigned to Hershey for conditioning

There is no chance of going to the game (in Atlanta) tonight, or not being home since it is snowing like crazy, so I will post the stating lines shortly before puck drop tonight!

Should be back after the ASG break. There is no reason to put him in tonight for one game when he could get injured. They might as well sit him and give him the 2 week break. The Caps don't play until next friday.

Alex Semin has been resigned by the Capitals. The contract is only for 1 year and does not contain any no trade clauses. The value of the contract is 6.7 million dollars, up from his previous contract of 6 million per year.

Also, Mathieu Perreault has been reassigned to the Hershey Bears.

I think so too but that will depend on Neuvirth's situation. All three of these guys will likely be back up

    Default CAPS vs. HABS 2/1/11

    Washington 27-15-9 vs. Montreal 27-18-5

    Washington at home: 16-5-6
    Montreal on the road: 11-12-1

    Last 10 games:
    Washigton: 4-3-3
    Montreal: 6-2-2

Tonight the Capitals enter the 141st meeting against the Habs with an overall record of 54-67-17-2. The Capitals have only played the Habs once this season on December 28th, winning 3-0. Last season the teams split the four game series 2-1-1.

The Capitals will be wearing their Winter Classic sweaters tonight against the Habs to honor Hockey Hall of Fame inductee and former Capital Dino Ciccarelli. Ciccarelli played his last four season in the NHL with the Capitals. The Capitals made it into the playoffs all four years that Ciccarelli was on the team. Ciccarelli, with 1.09 points-per-game has the second best playoff points-per-game average in Capitals history. Alexander Ovechkin leads the franchise with 1.29 points-per-game.

The Capitals have only allowed one goal during their last twenty-five penalty kills. During that twenty-five game span, the Capitals have successfully killed the last eighteen shorthanded situations. The Caps have only allowed one goal during non-shootout play in the last four games. If the Capitals can keep the Habs from scoring more than one goal tonight, it will be the longest stretch (5 games) since February of 1999.

Semyon Varlymov will start for the Capitals in goal tonight. Varly has been playnig very well this year between injuries and has managed to earn a 4th place ranking in the NHL in both goals against average as well as save percentage. Varly currently has a .927 GAA and 2.16 SV%. The Capitals are the first team in NHL history to win four or more games from each of three goaltenders all under the age of 23. Michal Neuvirth will be Varly's backup tonight against the Habs. Neuvirth was on the ice for a full practice last night at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, and is reportedly feeling much better then he did prior to the All-Star break after a recent groin injury.

John Carlson is at home in the Verizon Center. He has scored all five of his goals this season on home ice as well as fifteen of his twenty-one points. Carlson has seen improved ice team over the last month and has been pairing very well with Karl Alzner.

Matt Bradley will play his 600th game in the NHL tonight after missing several weeks due to a broken finger. He returned from the injury last week against the Thrashers.

Matthieu Perreault (MP85) has been recalled from the Hershey Bears after being reassigned for the All-Star break. Perreault has not had great numbers over the last nine games played with the Capitals, but perhaps his recall will spark some points. Perreault has been recalled from Hershey twice this season and has scored two points on each of his first games back with the Capitals. I am not sure that being reassigned to Hershey then recalled without missing a game with the Capitals will keep the trend alive, but I like the idea of it!

    Injuries and Recalls:
Alex Semin - game time decision
Tom Poti - upper body injury - day-to-day
Eric Fehr - upper body injury - started practicing this week
Tyler Sloan - recalled from conditioning stint in Heshey
Jay Beagle - reacalled from Hershey

It will be hard to say until pre-game warmups who will play and who will be scratched. I am going to the game tonight and will not be able to post the lineups prior to puck drop. Please refer to Capitals Insider 15-25 minutes prior to puck drop for tonights lineups.
