Reason Nabokov has to clear waivers is CBA rule 13.23.

    Code:
13.23 In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outside
North America after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his
Club, he may thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs)
only if he has first either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the
Playing Season, any such Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or
Loaned only after again clearing Waivers or through Waiver claim.
I think this is referred as "Reijo Ruotsalainen Rule". Oilers used to bring him in to play in the playoffs in the late 1980s. I think they signed him twice after regular season ended in Europe and both times Oilers won the cup. So I can see why other GM's wouldn't be too pleased about it and so they made a new rule to disallow this kind of rental players.

Also claiming him and trading at deadline is not possible without clearing waivers again as you can see from the end of the rule.

Brandon Funston told me he was going to get to it tonight. Which means it should be some time next week.

Oh damn...didn't think of that. Good reason.

    Thanks, man.

I'm guessing his value will ite into which team picks him up? Would you consider him to be top 10 status ? I know when he left the Sharks he was playing pretty poorly. Would a team look to him as a full time starter/backup or another time share opportunity? Your guesses?

I think it depends on where he is going. If he goes to Tampa, the starting job will be his to lose. If he were to go to elsewhere, it might not be a clear cut.

This happened to Wade Dubielewicz a couple of years ago. The Islanders signed him to be their back-up but Columbus took him off waivers.

Hey guys, sorry if this is a stupid question but I was wondering if anyone in a yahoo league knows if I we have to make a waiver claim on Nabokov when he gets added back to the league list, or whether he just comes back as a FA - NA.

Interesting take from David Pollak, beat writer for the SJS Sharks (who I've read since only last year but have always enjoyed), on where Nabokov could potentially land:

    http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/...vs-could-land/

Too long, didn't read version: He thinks the Caps are a good fit. Even though Nabby would have to go through the entire waiver process. And Tamba Bay is ahead of the Caps (unless I'm mistaken). And the Caps have under $1Mil in cap space (no pun intended and again, someone correct me if I'm wrong).

But I have to say.....that's a damn good fit.

caps could use him, though some fans at least are committed to Neuvy/Varly combo .... i think they're too unproven for the shot this team hopes to take. Problem is, they have only a million or so in cap space and are behind Tampa, who everyone agrees is the odds-on favorite (lotsa cap space, terrible current goaltending.)

Other possibilities -- Ottawa, Chicago, Philly, SJ, Dallas (maybe)
