Then why does it stay the same on capfriendly and decrease there?

If I go to cap friendly, why do we not see their salary decrease there? Lots of players get traded, and cap gets retained, but you don't see it changing on capfriendly as the days go by. It's because the cap doesn't decrease with time, just the amount they are paid by the team. The cap hit stays the same.

From NHL.com
For example, if a player has an average yearly salary of $2 million, the amount charged against the acquiring team's cap is the pro-rated amount remaining of $2 million. amount ($10,753) is then multiplied by the number of days remaining in the season from the day the trade is made.

I think Sid had to sit a game or two one year so Pittsburg could be cap compliant. Not positive on that.

No, CapFriendly shows the annual caphit and the NHL cap is not calculated by the sum of all active annual salaries like a FanTrax league is. The teams only need to have a team with a sum of all salries beneath the cap on opening day.
After that it works more like a cap of $81.5M over 82 games gives teams an average of just under $1M in caphit per game (but I think it's actually calculated using accumulated daily caphit on off-days as well as game-days) so if you trade for Stepan 2/3 of the way through the season only the 1/3 of his remaining daily caphit is relevant. If the Oilers don't have any injuries and don't make paper transactions to pinch dollars out of the accumulating caphits and at 2/3 through the season they've used 2/3 of the cap at that point it's going to be harder to squeeze higher caphit contracts into the remaining 1/3 of the season.
I'm hoping someone else can clear up what I have wrong and explain it better but basically CapFreindly show annual caphits but the NHL's accumlates daily through the season based on who's active.
edit: Thought of a better way to convey what I was getting at
For example, 3 players make $10M each in caphit per season
Player A plays the entire season, Player B misses 10% of the season on IR, and Player C is traded to Player A and B's team 2/3 of the way through the season
Capfriendly will show their salaries as $30M out of the $81M cap when they are active but their actual hit to the team for the season will only be $22,333,333 (Player A $10M, Player B $9M, Player C $3,333,333)
Right on.
I still don't want Stepan for the Oilers.

Excellent clarifications gents. I thought it worked this way but seeing it illustrated is always good.
I know they're losing but at least Mike Smith has looked decent.
I was actually being serious....but I hadn't seen the goal Adam Larsson scored on him
