One way to clear salary. Spooner and Rattie both placed on waivers today.

Not really. It saves like $1M off each cap hit to demote to the minors but considering they have to be replaced on the roster the savings are hardly anything.

Rattie's salary is only $800k so I was only thinking about Spooner but forgot there are restrictions on burying salary in the minors.

If that old rule was still in place you would see a lot more big salaries in the minors than you do currently. Now there's no incentive to demote a big contract unless the player shows he's not NHL caliber, which is how it should be.

One tweet from today how Chiarelli needs to be fired beside his article from two weeks ago about how the resident genius Chiarelli is back

I don’t understand why Chiarelli still has a job. He’s proven to be astoundingly incompetent to the point where I don’t bother to poke fun at the Oilers anymore because it’s just so sad. . Clearly he’s been blocked from making any more deals so why keep him around? It just continues to weigh this team down. Fire the guy already and get to work selecting a new management team that can get ready for the off-season.

Can't disagree with that. Man he sucks.

It's worth noting Marc Bergevin was also seen as incompetent at this time a year ago and somehow almost everything he has touched since then turned into gold. I still think he has serious flaws as a GM but somehow the results are there. I just doubt Chiarelli has a chance to turn anything into gold on next year's Oilers.

Koskinen just signed a 3 year deal.

Mikko Koskinen signed a three-year, $13.5 million contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.

Koskinen will earn $5.2 million next season, $3.8 million (including $500,000 in a signing bonus) in 2020-21, and $4.5 million in 2021-22.

The Oilers have not announced the signing yet so I am still hopeful it is not true. That is way too much money for way too long for such a big question mark.
