I'm fairly sure LTIR can be retroactive?
LTIR status requires a player to miss 10 games and 24 NHL days. Smith has already missed 13 GP and 30 days so retroactively placing him on LTIR does not mean anything regarding his return date (could be tomorrow) and gives the Oilers some LTIR cap relief to potentially be used at the trade deadline.
So just another cap move essentially.

I'm pretty sure that you are right. I think that I read somewhere that you can't retroactively place someone on LTIR and then remove them the same day. Of course that would mean they weren't really hurt when you py them on, so of course that should be disallowed.

Did he ever. That was another sleepy start for the Oilers and he was lights out in the 1st and solid all game.

Both goalies played well. Tons of high quality chances at both ends. Thankfully Koskinen outplayed Lehner.

Surprising how many odd man rushes and breakaways Vegas gave up. Oilers were able to cash in, otherwise Lehner was pretty good. Koskinen might have had his best game as an Oiler. Even on good teams your goalie has to steal one for you now and again!

Yeap...great game last night by Koskinen. Nice to see the Oilers win against a good team with strong goal-tending and secondary scoring...they didn't need McDavid and Draisaitl to carry them for a change.

They actually played well enough to win last night but just couldnt pull it off. The last few games have not been kind to the Oilers but considering the injuries to their blue line the past few weeks, I am not surprised.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt as well. Nurse is a huge loss. I didn't expect them to continue on the pace they were on, especially once Nurse went down.

While I don't think goaltending has been the issue, rumor has it Smith could be back for Tuesdays game.

Smith is an upgrade over Koskinen but problem with Smith is that he is older and keeps getting these nagging injuries. Oilers could possibly be relying on Koskinen in the playoffs…

There have always been cracks in Edmonton's game. But this is just a typical cold spell. They did lose most of their D core for a chunk of games and they are still missing a few of their main pieces.

Goaltending has been meh. Nothing great. Nothing horrible. Smith coming back may spark the team a bit, and when healthy Smith is Edmonton's best goalie, but overall Smith is not gonna tip the scales too much.

Edmonton will start getting back in the win column soon. Draisaitl and McDreamy will get a second wind at some point and carry the team again for a nice stretch.

Edmonton lacks, a solid D core, depth scoring and strong goaltending.

I think they will make the playoffs, but I am not too confident they will go very deep.

The McDraisaitl tandem can only take them so far.
