I haven’t been able to watch any of the Oilers games so far this season. The inconsistency in their game is concerning. What seems to be the problem ?

Bad luck (literally bottom-3 in "luck" stats expected goals vs goals) in the league.
The good news is their record is not a disaster, in a wild card and 4 points out of first (2P and 2 games in hand for Vegas).
If they can get more consistent play and the luck corrects they still have a reasonable shot to win the wide open Pacific division.
