If Chiarelli is staying, MacLellan has to be going. There's no way they can bring back everyone from last year after what they just went through. I would have been happier with MacLellan staying over Chiarelli but it is what it is.

    Here is the catch.
The GM can fire his coach and get someone new. But a GM getting fired rarely leaves the existing coach intact as the new GM wants to put in place 'his guy'. Nicholson is hesitant to have another coach replaced as the Oilers have had a revolving door of coaches the last bunch of years IF he got rid of Chia.
So for stability sake, I think the Oil will maintain Chiarelli and MacLellan into the next season but knowing that another bad start will force Nicolson to jetison possibly both those guys.

Not defending Chiarelli but did anyone really expect him to be fired?
Most GM's outlive there 1st coach hiring.
I suspect Mclellan will remain too as that buys Chiarelli more time, he can always say "well the coaching is the problem", and replace Todd if next season goes poorly and buy himself another year.
    We are stuck with Peter.

I was reading that there is a lot of backroom Oilers who are ready for McLellan to move on.

I haven't said this often lately but smart signing by Chiarelli.

    https://twitter.com/KurtLeavins/stat...16590525726721

Ty Rattie re-signs w the #Oilers 1-Year, $800k. Value contract. Those will be absolutely critical this coming season.

I don't think Rattie was getting much more then that elsewhere.. Without McJesus he actually looks like a borderline AHL'er.. But if he is going to play like that and only command $800k, then that is a bargain in my eyes..

Chiarelli messed up Boston with regards to the cap, now he is doing it in Edmonton..

I dont think he was going to get much more than that anywhere else either, but at least Chiarelli signed the guy to a one year deal and nothing more than that, and to a contract that can be affordable even if he ends up in the AHL at some point next year.

Rattie showed some nice chemistry on that top line in the short time he was there. At this price, for one year, it is a good contract to try.

No doubt. Let's not forget that he was a highly regarded prospect when in St Louis so this could be a low risk high reward situation.

Sigh 2.0. Lets hold with the same GM and coach who just did a hard left turn down a straight road. We'll replace the assistant coaches because clearly they were the issue with the teams crappy play.

Todd McLellan retained as Oilers Head Coach. Ian Herbert and Jim Johnson relieved of duties. Jay Woodcroft new HC in Bakersfield.

I'm good with this. I'm pretty sure it was all Herbert and JJ's fault for the poor season anyway. I sure hope that next season isn't a repeat of this year because the home crowd won't be so forgiving...especially after winning the draft lottery (again) and snagging the little Swedish dude.

Oiler fans! Any truth to the speculation that Chiarelli is looking at Ristolainen for Klefbom and #10? I mean, his stupid decisions are well-documented, but I can't believe he'd do something like this again...would he?

Until they happen, they are just rumors. With Chiarelli, nothing would surprise me. Dont get me wrong, I'd love to have Ristolainen in Edmonton, but that price is way too high for Risto. He isn't worth Klefbom + 10th overall.

Having just acquired Ristolainen, I would love for this trade to happen.

Ristolainen is, imo, an upgrade on Klefbom, but not sure the difference between them is really worth the 10th overall pick. That said, I don't care much about draft picks any longer and I just want the Oilers to be better. Not sure what other dmen they should target instead of Risto.

The other nice thing about Risto is that he is signed long-term at a reasonable cap hit.
