And how does this one merit the same punishment as Deveaux on Fleischmann?

My take on Shanny is that I liked what he did early but the true test would come when the "purists" and "traditionalists" in influential positions start to whine and cry about being terrified of change. So far, consider me skeptical of this whole experiment.
WEll said Eric. I have no f#ckin respect for what is going on now. Shannahan...he truly does dislike Montreal...reason he never wanted to come here to play backs this up. Malone on Campoli WTF!!! THE ONLY difference between the 2 is that pac came from the side and sorta let up....Malone came from straight on and destroyed campoli's head.

Chara is not a repeat offender and Max P now is. Brilliant!

It's not Shanny, it's the people above him who are responsible for him having the job. In the big picture I think things are better but it's damn frustrating to be a hockey fan for a team that is ALWAYS on the wrong side of these decisions while a certain rival team can get away with murder if they just explain their actions correctly. When a Habs player is the offender, it's max punishment. When it's another team, it's "well we're not sure what he was trying to do" or "he put himself in a vulnerable position".

And i'm fine with Max P being suspended....not fine with not being consistent. Also, max being a 1st timer should have only received a 1 game suspension in my opinion. Max said himself, now he's going to be afraid to hit. Fricking HATE the new NHL. HATE. I wish they'd bring back the old soft gear and allow players to do on ice policing. By soft gear it helps in two ways. 1 - players don't feel so indestructible and 2 - which will result in not as many injuries.

Definitely agree with the need for softer equipment, with the only issue being that shots are harder now than they were 20 years ago. I know guys like Iafrate and MacInnis were around back then but today everyone shoots well. I'm almost 100% certain that technology could overcome this problem though.

I think inconsistent rulings are far more influential in on-ice injuries than the lack of fighting/policing by the players themselves. I'm a big fan of the NFL which has no fighting but they do a better job of cleaning up the BS. They only play 16 games which means their season 1/5 of the NHL's schedule, which means that each game is 5 times more important than a hockey game. If a team loses a game, it's like losing 5 straight in the NHL. So players fear getting those 15-yard personal fouls that negate potential scoring plays because the penalty can cause so much damage to the team. They rarely suspend players because the punishment on the team is already critical and the player is embarrassed.

I was just a huge fan of policing on the ice. Pukes like Lappierre would not yap so much and no one would be putting their hands on star players. The NHL sched is definitely too large. Protective gear has nothing to do with shots really....no one uses Ludwigs shinpads anyway.

Chara would but they're too small.

    Default Canadiens 1, Ducks 4

I won't spend too much time on this one. The Habs were terrible aside from a short burst of energy in the opening minutes. Heading into the game the Pacioretty suspension forced some line juggling which did nothing to help the team. After Andrei Kostitsyn opened the scoring early in the first the team went flat and the Ducks (who did not play well either) took over the game from there.

The power play was the story tonight. They were atrocious. They moved Plekanec off the point (finally) but from top to bottom they did nothing right with the man advantage. The only guy that could gain possession in the offensive zone was Erik Cole.

I thought Rafael Diaz had a really tough game. He had trouble finding the net with his shot and struggled moving the puck all night. Something rattled him because he totally lacked concentration.

Mike Cammalleri is the new goat of the team with Scott Gomez out due to injury. He had no shots on net and made a bunch of lazy and careless plays all night. He had one spirited shift in the first period that drew a penalty but aside from that it's clearly a guy going through the motions will collecting his money.

Major props to Hal Gill who blocked 11 shots. He is a force on the PK.

Louis Leblanc made his NHL debut. He played less than 8 minutes which is a moronic decision by the coach, especially with the way the rest of the team played. If the guy called up is not going to play, call up a vet instead. I would have liked to see more of him, Eller and Moen tonight.

Lots of coasting, lazy backchecking and lack of cohesiveness throughout the game. Can't blame Budaj for the loss because there was no support in front of him.

In all fairness, when 30 minutes of the game is played on the special teams, there is not a lot of room to involve a guy who did not have a real practice with the team. I also would like to see him more tomorrow night, but the Habs have to stay out of the box.

The rest of your analysis is spot on. Atrocious power play, no energy... seemed like nobody cared.

The way they played on the power play actually supports my point. Would he have done worse than Cammalleri giving the puck away every time? But you're right about the amount of minutes spent killing penalties taking a chunk out of everyone's usual time.
