I like this signing better than the Thompson one.
It pretty much seals the fate of Hudon and by extent, Peca as well...

Bergevin MO. Now, if only the top six could be overstocked... with gamebreakers.

I like the Weal signing, he fits really well with the team and the style of play Julien wants. He can play wing as well as center and move up the lineup if necessary.

Thompson? Meh. But I understand the value of a veteran centerman who's strong on faceoffs. He's basically there to give Danault a breather on faceoffs. For only a year, I don't mind it too much.

I just hope this doesn't lead to more young guys falling on waivers and being lost for nothing

Who's really in that situation next year? Hudon is gone. McCarron? Shinkaruk? Olofsson? Ouellet? Don't think anyone will need or that we would miss them.

I didn't check, and it's not like de la Rose and Scherbak are big losses either. But they were prospects with value at some point and nothing came of it. But then again if someone arrives and shows he is worth a shot in the big leagues it won't be easy to make that possible.

I tell ya, either the scouting or the professional development program (or both) is broken in MTL and has been for a wile because it sets a team back years when their first rounders (or high seconds) don't pan out as NHL regulars on their rosters... let alone star players on the same...

I'm willing to bet all those names are gone and a new crop of potential bottom 6 players comes in.

McCarron was an AHL all-star in his rookie year
Scherbak had 30 points in 26 AHL games last year
JDLR looked like a promising 4th line C
Hudon looked like a promising 3rd line wing with upside
Beaulieu looked like a promising top 4 D

McCarron did look like he had potential but he was a knee jerk reaction pick after the Sens ran the last Habs right out of the playoffs with physical play.

None of the those players has blossomed into an NHL regular with their new teams (Hudon is still here) except maybe JDLR on a shallow Wings team.

That's the right move for him. In the NHL he would be down to probably a two-way deal so not much money in the AHL. At least there's some decent coin for him to earn somewhere. Always enjoyed his work ethic.
