The reports are he wants to stay but that's also been the report for everyone else that eventually leaves as a free agent (see John Tavares). I agree he would likely walk for nothing next summer unless the Habs offer him a killer deal now.

Given the leaks that ownership directed mgmt to acquire picks and prospects, the lack of a center acquisition all season and now into the offseason, and now this, it seems Bergevin is fully set on a rebuild. Looking at the big contracts on 30+ players in the Weber and Price deals, he might be thinking that the risk of letting Pacioretty walk is more acceptable than the risk that his next deal harms the future. Any 6 or 7 year deal he's likely looking for would just add insult to the injury that will be the approximately 20M tied up in Price and Weber 3, 4, 5 years from now and beyond.

Yeah pretty much. To me the signing does two things:

1) Competition for a bottom-pairing spot
2) Temporarily satisfies RDS/TVA and simpleton fans who want every player on the team to be Quebec-born

It's too bad he had the injuries he had. He was a promising young Dman in the league. Not much for offense but still a solid guy even for fantasy in those with H+B.

It's standard procedure. All teams invite players and it's not like you get top-pair defenders and #1 centers on a PTO.

Armia probably wanted one year. He'll get more opportunity so he might be worth more next summer. There's no danger here for the team either since he'll be RFA next summer.
