Yes, but I thought that last year was his last shot...

Like I said on another seperate post, one year is ok, but I would have given him less money. I'm really on the fence with AK. When he's on, he's on and he's good, but that's not happening as much as I would like.
I believe they signed him at whatever rate the qualifying offer was worth. So he would have signed for this amount after July 1st anyway.

If I'm not mistaken, AK will be UFA after this contract. Maybe this will be sufficient to motivate him...

How awesome would it be if he had his breakout year, finally. When this kid's on, he is a great complement to Pleks and Cammy with his size and shot. Of course, if he breaks out and finally does what he is capable of (say 33G and 35 assists) then he'd probably command upwards of $4.5m per year as a free agent.

    We shall see.

Even if he had a breakout year why would anyone trust him? If you track his history, every time he actually had hot streaks his two linemates were generally playing even better (Kovalev/Plekanec in 2008).

If he manages to put together a realatively consistent, very strong season (none of this 12 games without scoring, 8 games with 6 goals, 9 games without scoring, 11 games with 9 goals crap), he will get some offers with his combination of size and skill. There aren't many guys with that combo around, teams salivate for guys like that. Obviously the inconsistency and KHL threat is there, but teams will look past that to get a big winger like him, how nice would he look next to Kopitar in LA, for example.

Another signing this morning. A lesser one, but one that I like. Mathieu Darche has signed a one year contract for $700K.

He's an hard worker and doesn't mind to be in the traffic in front of the net. He's been pretty good last year on the 3rd line.

Great signing! You would think this guy would be worth over a million by now.

Agree that Darche is a great re-signing. He and Gill were big lockerroom signings, good guys at reasonable prices who everyone likes and character players who both show up for the playoffs.

Kostitsyn was a simple re-signing, made sense at that same price as last year for 1 year, a low-risk signing in my opinion.

I have to imagine next is Markov, then Gorges, to finish things off on D, and then focus on possibly signing a top 6 forward after July 1st (although I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen).

would you not say that the top 6 is set?

    Pacioretty - Plekanec - Cammalleri
    Gionta - Gomez - Kostitsyn

or do you hope to see a Gomez replacement / upgrade?

I think we have to wait another season. Next summer it's inevitable because Price is due for a big raise.

I think it's safe to say that the Habs were the Bruins' toughest opponent this playoff...
