Blackhawks winger Anthony Duclair set to become an unrestricted free agent

Anthony Duclair is just 22 years old, has a 20-goal season under his belt and can skate with just about anybody in the NHL. But he?ll be on his fourth NHL team in the fall.In a mild surprise, the Blackhawks decided not to tender Duclair a qualifying offer. That means the restricted free agent will become an unrestricted free agent Sunday, free to sign anywhere.

A qualifying offer would have cost the Hawks about $1.5 million, and with young players such as Dylan Sikura, Victor Ejdsell and Dominik Kahun expected to leapfrog Duclair on the organizational depth chart in the fall, there apparently wasn?t room for him at that price.

In theory, Duclair could come back at a cheaper price. But with his speed and the potential he has been chasing since his 20-goal season as a rookie in 2015-16, he?s likely to find plenty of suitors, even though the Hawks were unable to trade his negotiating rights.

Crazy, but I guess it makes sense from Chicago's perspective. Maybe Ottawa will sign him...

A lot of Chicago fans are upset about this. Duclair didn't show much in his time with Chicago before getting hurt and he had prime opportunities. In my opinion- meh. This is a Bowman call so I'll just trust he is making the right call.

Does Sikura get a fair shake at the top line? Can he be this year's DeBrincat? Grabbed him off the wire and very intrigued about his short and long term potential. For Chicago's top prospect, he seems to fly under the radar

Hard to say. I have a feeling Chicago is soon to fill a top six winger spot in a deal after clearing a bunch of cap space. If Sikura had a chance before, he might have just lost it once this trade happens (assuming it does).

If they go with Toews and Anisimov down the middle, that puts Kane, Schmaltz, Debrincat, and possibly Saad on the wings in that top six, and this is before they make a potential trade. I dont like Sikura's chances early in his career but nothing is ever written in stone.

Sikura will most likely be a winger at the NHL level. Probably starts in the 3rd line but obviously that can change depending on chemistry.

Kane and DeBrincat are clearly ahead of Sikura but other than that, he has every opportunity to have a good role. Schmaltz will probably play center which allows them to have three scoring lines. It's all about chemistry for guys like Sikura - if he has it with a high-end player, he'll be a great complementary player on a great line. Otherwise he's probably just an average 3rd-liner.

Sikura will definitely get opportunities to play on the top 2 lines this season. If you figure the pairs are Toews/Saad and Schmaltz/Kane then you have 2 winger spots available on the top 2 lines. Debrincat gets one of those roles- I would bet on the Toews line. Like many Hawk fans, I am concerned that Q will not be able to help himself and have Kunitz on one of the top 2 lines. He never paired Schmaltz, Kane, and Debrincat together last season so I doubt he puts Sikura on the Schmaltz/Kane line. So I guess this is the roundabout way of saying I think Sikura will start on the 3rd line with Anisimov and someone like Hayden of Edjsell. Granted, with the Hawks new cap space there is speculation that they are trying to trade for a top 6 winger.

Sikura is a nice prospect and someone to keep an eye on. Trading Hinostrova will give Sikura a bigger opportunity unless the Hawks trade for Skinner or Patches.

Hawks are a playoff team if Crawford is close to 100% and they get a bounceback year from Saad and the continued development from Schmaltz and Debrincat. They are clearly behind the Pred, Jets, and Blues in the division. They are much closer to being a lottery team than a contender.

    Kane 76 pts
    Debrincat 64 pts
    Schmaltz 61 pts
    Toews 59 pts
    Saad 56 pts

I think that is a safe projection. If Schmaltz has a big season Kane can easily be back over 80 pts.
