Interesting powerplay lines today from Stockholm. The Rangers practiced 5 on 3 and 4 on 3 and this is what it looked like:

    5 on 3:
Zuccarello-Dubinsky-Callahan with Gaborik and Richards on the points

    4 on 3:
Zuccarello-Callahan with Gaborik and Richards on the points.

    --------------------------------------------------------
-Larry Brooks reports Staal is receiving the same treatment that Kaleta and Connolly received for their concussions.

-Mike Rupp had the day off. 'Maintenance day'.

-Numerous reports stating the Rangers are talking with Paul Mara. They really wanted Mara to come to camp for a tryout but he told them he would not practice unless given a contract.

-Erixon has arrived in Stockholm and is practicing with the team.

-Sather says that Avery can earn his way back onto the team with a strong showing in Hartford. Lets see what Coach Tortorella has to say about that.

    --------------------------------------------------------

Opening Day Lineup (Oct 7th, 1pm):

    Dubinsky-Richards-Gaborik
    Fedotenko-Anisimov-Callahan
    Wolski-Stepan-Fedotenko
    Prust-Boyle-Rupp

    Mcdonagh-Girardi
    Del Zotto-Sauer
    Erixon-Eminger

    Lundqvist
    Biron

    Scratches: Bickel, Bell, Christensen

    Default Pre-Game Notes: Oct 7 - Rangers @ LA

New York Rangers (0-0-0) @ Los Angelas Kings (0-0-0)

Today's game marks the second time in 4 years that the Rangers will be entering the season from Europe. New York played fairly well in the preseason going 1-1-1 against NHL teams and 3-1-0 against European teams. The Kings managed a 3-2-2 record against NHL teams without the talents of superstar defenseman Drew Doughty.

Todays main focus will be the arrival of two Richards, Brad and Mike. Brad was signed to a 9 year $58.5M early July to fill the Rangers void at center and to create a more efficient powerplay the Rangers so desperately need. With Brad Richards added to the Rangers roster, Slovak-sniper Marian Gaborik will now have an elite playmaker at his disposal. Brandon Dubinsky will be joining the two for the beginning of the season coming off a team-leading 24 goal/54 point campaign.

Former-Flyer captain Mike was surprisingly traded to the Kings late June for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and a second-round pick in the upcoming draft. This gives tremendous depth down the middle for the Kings with Kopitar-Richards being the one-two punch.

Heres some game-notes from Newsday Steve Zipay:

The Rangers have five new players on their opening night roster: Brad Richards, Mike Rupp, Brendan Bell, Tim Erixon and Jeff Woywitka. Erixon is looking to make his NHL debut.

Ranger Milestones in sights - Brandon Prust: 3 games from 200th NHL career -Brad Richards: 4 assists from 500th NHL career -Mike Rupp: 3 games from 500th NHL career

The Rangers are currently 16 wins shy of 2,500 wins, having won 2,484 games all-time in franchise history.

RECENT TRANSACTIONS: Oct. 5 - Recalled defenseman Tim Erixon from Connecticut (AHL) Oct. 5 - Assigned forward Sean Avery to Connecticut (AHL) Oct. 5 - Placed defenseman Marc Staal on IR Oct. 6 - Claimed defenseman Jeff Woywitka off waivers from Montreal Oct. 6 - Assigned defenseman Stu Bickel to Connecticut (AHL)

    Tonight's Lines:

    Default Post-Game Notes: NYR 2 LA 3

A few notes on the NY Rangers...

-Richards/Gaborik/Dubinsky had a invisible 1st period but really picked up as the game went along. In the 3rd especially they were getting really comfortable and it looks like they are what everyone thought they would be.
-Ryan Callahan had 11 shots today. Lots of them were low % but anything can happen. Thats his career high (7 was before)
-The Rangers PK looked great today getting in the lanes and it never hurts having Henrik Lundqvist
-The powerplay had DZ and Richards on the points with Gabby/Dubi/Cally up front. Only one pp today so didn't get to see much to give an opinion.
-Del Zotto played a pretty solid game defensively aside from the Richards goal. I think he'll stick all year if he plays like he did today.
-Mcdonagh played amazing up until the OT where he would take an offensive zone penalty. Can't have that especially with Staal out.
-Wolski only played 10:34 and only took 2 shifts in the first and only a couple more in the second. It seems like he is playing injured.

    Rangers.com Preview:

After dropping their season-opener 3-2 in overtime to the Kings Friday night in Stockholm, the Rangers are right back at it at the Ericsson Globe Saturday when they face the Anaheim Ducks. Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped 27 of 30 shots Friday, will start once again in goal for the Rangers, who received goals from Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik in the opener. The Blueshirts will need to be more disciplined against the highly-skilled Ducks after allowing the Kings 5 power plays, including one that led to the game-losing goal Friday night. After logging 30:18 and 26:50 worth of ice-time respectively last night, Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh will play key roles again tonight against Anaheim's powerful top line of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Bobby Ryan. Anaheim lost its season opener Friday, 4-1 to Buffalo in Helsinki, Finland. Share your thoughts on today's game below.

    Default Post-Game Report - Rangers 1 @ Ducks 2 (SO)

Here are some post game notes about the NY Rangers:

-Henrik Lundqvist was beyond magnificient. The only shot to be him in the shootout was a changeup that squeeked through his pads. Its just unfortunate the Rangers offense offered up as much support as a deadbeat dad.
-Callahan played an amazing game again with 6 hits (all great) and a pair of shots. Looks like this will be a career year for the young captain.
-The lines in the 3rd period were veryyyyyyyy jumbled. It seemed like every shift Torts tossed out 3 different guys. It seemed like Stepan benefited the most out of any forward in the third though (played about 7 minutes in the 3rd). Stepan played 20 minutes today with nearly 8 minutes on special teams.
-Richards was almost non-existant all game but then sniped an absolute beauty. I'll toss the link on here when I can get one.
-One thing I really noticed was how often the Rangers attempted a home run pass to Marian Gaborik. Once the season gets going and those start connecting we might be seeing a career year for Marian.
-Dubinsky had a game to forget with 8 pims. He fought Corey Perry (and was a minor penalty?) which was a great idea, but then took 2 stupid penalties. He appeared to be too pumped up for the game running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I believe he'll be off the top line next week and Wolski/Fedotenko or Stepan will be playing the top line.
-Del Zotto played a great game defensively up until a huge blunder late in the game. He had the puck near the red line and instead of clearing it he skated back trying to get the team to start the rush. The bad thing was he skated backwards with Getzlaf and Perry behind him. Torts was livid.
-The powerplay today was awful. Plain and simple. Nothing seemed to work as even late in the game tossed Richards up front instead of on the point. If the Rangers want to have any success this year they will have to fix that first and foremost.

This is a quick wrapup today...the Rangers are back in action next Saturday against the Islanders.

    Default Rangers AHL+NCAA+Junior Update:

-Chris Kreider resumed his weekend with another 2 point performance while #5BC thumped #3 North Dakota 6-2. He had 4 pts in 2 games on the weekend and was rewarded with the Ice Breaker Tourney MVP.
-The Whale had a night to forget losing 6-3 to the Flyers affiliate. The one plus out of the night was a Newbury hat-trick. Wade Redden was -4 with an assist. http://www.ctwhale.com/default.asp?c...=59&objId=1605
--Jonathan Audy-Marchessault was the only plus player for the Whale and had 3 shots (led the Q in playoff points and assists last year)
-Christian Thomas is begin to picking it up with 2 goals last night.
-Steven Fogarty (3rd rounder 2011) has 2 goals in 6 games for the Steel of the USHL. Hes a -10 in those 6 games.

Reports out of practice had Stepan playing top line with Richards and Gaborik. That reunited the Dub-Ani-Cally line. Also, Fedotenko was with Prust and Boyle. Wolskis groin is still hurt and Sauers getting better. No update on Staal.

    Default Practice Notes

-Wolski and Callahan returned to practice. Doesn't seem as if Wolski will be playing tomorrow though being the extra forward in most drills.
-Sauer did not practice as his shoulder injury is lingering.
-Woywitka looks like he'll draw in for the first time for the Rangers. He will be wearing the famous #6.
    Practice Lines/Projected Lines for Tomorrow:
    Stepan-Richards-Gaborik
    Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan
    Fedotenko-Boyle-Prust
    Rupp-Christensen-Zuccarello

    McDonagh-Girardi
    Del Zotto-Erixon
    Eminger-Woywitka

lr, do you reckon Stepan on the first line is just a stop-gap because of Wolski's injury?

I think its impossible to say without seeing Stepan with Richards and Gaborik. If he clicks, it'll be his job to lose.

New York Rangers (0-0-2) @ New York Islanders (2-1-0)

    NY Rangers.com Preview:
The Rangers renew their rivalry with the Islanders Saturday night at the Nassau Coliseum, the Blueshirts' first contest since dropping a 2-1 shootout decision to the Ducks in Stockholm one week ago. The Rangers (0-0-2, 2 pts) are seeking their first win in 2011-12, while the Islanders (2-1-0, 4 pts) are riding a two-game win streak after skating past the Lightning 5-1 on Thursday night. Last year the Rangers won four of their six meetings with the Islanders, including two of three at the Coliseum. The Blueshirts hold a 112-98-19-5 all-time record vs. the Isles.

    NY Islanders Notes:

-Grabner had 1G0A in 5 games against NYR last season.

    NY Rangers Notes:
-Wolski (groin) is doubtful for today. Sauer (shoulder) will not play today.
-Stepan almost has his biggest game of the early season today. He'll be lining up with Richards and Gaborik. At least to start...
-Woywitka will draw in for his Ranger debut. He'll be dawning the illustrious #6. He was paired with Eminger back in the world juniors approx 50 years ago.

    NY Rangers Lineup
    Stepan-Richards-Gaborik
    Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan
    Zuccarello-Christensen-Rupp

    Default Post-Game 2 Rangers @ 4 Islanders

Here are some post game notes from yesterdays Rangers @ Islanders game...

-Derek Stepan did all the little things right and it looks like he'll be top line on Tuesday against the Canucks. That line was jumping all night.
-Gaborik used his breakaway speed to score a beauty from Richards and I'm sure this will not be the last we hear of the two.
-Zuccarello has not been much of a factor thus far. He was sent down following the game and Newbury was recalled for him. Newbury has 4G4A in 4 games. He's hoping to make an immediate impact by sparking the 3rd/4th line.
-The powerplay saw Girardi and Richards on the back end with Callahan, Dubinsky and Gaborik up front. The powerplay again went 0 for so it should be different yet again next game.
-Woywitka looked like a guy who just came off waivers and was playing his first game of the year. He wasn't that bad, but wasn't that great either. Not sure how much we'll see of him but if Sauers injury is more serious than once thought, he'll be playing 14+ a night.
-Del Zotto has really been making strides every game it seems. He's reading the play well so the points will soon follow.
-Dubinsky looks like hes trying to do a million things on the ice every shift. He has to slow his game down a bit to return to the player he was last season...and to make the next step.
-Rupp has been an almost non-factor so far this season. He has 6 hits in 3 games and was pumped by George Parros. Not a great start.
-Prust was flying again last night. He scored a goal and his shoulder looked just fine in the celebration.

-As Larry Brooks tweeted, Avery wasn't even considered to be recalled due to his injury. He's not even skating yet.
-Brendan Bell has also been recalled by the Rangers. He has 1 pt in 2 games with 12 pims for the Whale.
