Default My account of the draft.

    The Sexy Weasels

    1. (5) Roberto Luongo (Van - G)
AO, Crosby, Malkin, and Stamkos are off the board. I know I'm not going to win the goal scoring title. Could have went Kovy or Backstrom, but up against AO, Crosby and Malkin that's like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Instead I zig instead of zag, put on a bulletproof vest and stock goaltending. Went Luongo (because I think Vancouver is the better team) but would have been equally as happy with Brodeur or Miller. Green was the only other player under consideration.

    2. (24) Miikka Kiprusoff (Cgy - G)
So begins an absolute rediculous run on goaltenders. Turco in the second round? Are you kidding me. Not slaggin whoever picked him because it literally was one player for every goalie and you had to take what was left. We dress 3 in a 14 team league...there's not enough starters to go around. I'm 50-50 between Kipper and Fluery. Went Kipper cause he's less injury prone. It's head to head, but with my first two picks I have a pretty good chance to win every goal category.

    3. (33) Corey Perry (Anh - RW)
PIMs, Hits, Shots...all things Perry excels in.

    4. (52) Bobby Ryan (Anh - LW)
Debated between Ryan and Perry in my last pick, was thilled to get him as my #1 left wing. Thinking "Maybe people will think I'm an Ducks fan and offer me lobsided deals for Getzlaf and Visnovsky".

    5. (61) Anze Kopitar (LA - C)
Wanted a center at this point. Was between Spezza and Kopitar. Took Kopitar because of the fringe stats mentioned above. He's also a bit less injury prone, although probably lower ceiling at this point in his career.

    6. (80) Ryane Clowe (SJ - LW)
Was getting excited thinking Hossa was going to slip through to here...but no!!! Damn McDuff McTook my player. Totally blew this pick by mistake, was setting to queue and mistakenly took him instead of Sharp or Statsny. Not that I don't like Clowe. His PIMs and LW allocation are awesome much like a Hartnell but I thought I could have got him a couple rounds later. Just one kick in the nads after another it seemed at this point.

    7. (89) Patrick Sharp (Chi - C,LW)
Ended up getting Sharp on the way back. His versatiliy as lw/c put him ahead of Roy but at this point I'm still shaking my head and not having a Sharp-Statsny (who was taken in between) second line.

    8. (108) Ales Hemsky (Edm - RW)
A run of defensemen occurred around this point. For d, there are 3 clear favorites, then about a dozen tier twos. The rest are all pretty similar. All but the 3's are gone (with the exception of Markov...see below) so I decide to fill out my forward roster with a ppg player that is somewhat injury prone. Lack of defensemen has me a little worried at this point.

    9. (117) Bryan McCabe (Fla - D)
Could have had Markov here, and I wanted Markov here but I opted with McCabe for two reasons. He was my first defenseman and I didn't want to risk an injured player in that slot and secondly, I was hoping Markov's injury would scare other gm's away...so I could snag him next round. D'oh! Markov is taken a couple picks after. McDuff again!!! *Boycotts McDonalds*

    10. (136) Tobias Enstrom (Atl - D)
Need d. Already have lots of PIMs and Hits so I went a straight points d-man.

    11. (145) Stephane Robidas (Dal - D)
Looks like a bad pick but 275 hits...are you kidding? Spit out my pop when I saw that...I feel like a highschool cheerleader. If he gets me 40 points and that many hits and I'm laughing. Bouwmeester was also in consideration. I thought I may be able to go Bouw and get Robidas on the way back but after the Markov burn I went what I thought was BPA.

    12. (164) Wojtek Wolski (Pho - LW)
There were better players left for my UTIL at centre, but I'm hoping my depth at LW (Ryan, Sharp, Clowe, Wolski) in a relatively shallow position pays off in a trading aspect later.

    13. (173) Nikolai Khabibulin (Edm - G)
I posted that I threw up a little bit when I made this pick and I meant it. As happy as I was snagging Kipper and Luongo earlier, I waited too long for my 3rd goalie. Maybe Oilers are a little better this year, but I doubt it. Even if they are he probably hurts my GAA. I'll have to grab at least one other backup to make up for it. Bad pick and bad strategy. Possible trade bait for some GM who autopicked and missed out on the goalie run (autopick gms: please don't read this!!!).

    14. (192) Marek Zidlicky (Min - D)
4th d. Lots of quality d left. Really between him and Kubina. Same pigs different trough. Not concerned either way, still a bunch of decent d on the waiver wire.

    15. (201) Corey Crawford (Chi - G)
This is my make up pick for Bulin. I think he gets 30 games which is much preferable to dressing Bulin for 60. This is one of those under the radar picks that wins leagues.

    16. (220) Martin Havlat (Min - RW)
Another potential ppg RW who is also injury prone. Hopefully him and Hemsky alternate injury times.

    17. (229) Mike Fisher (Ott - C)
Huge player when you count hits and blocked shots. Taking a centre also potentially allows me to move a LW. Hot wife. Easy choice.

    18. (248) Andrew Raycroft (Dal - G)
Goalie insurance #2. I like Lehtonen but would be shocked if he lasts the season. I'm thinking 30 games as well for Raycroft.

Overall I'm fairly happy with my team. I'd put my goaltending up against anyone. Should be high on PIMs and hits too...that's half the cats. Kicking myself for getting Clowe and missing on Statsny as well as gambling with Markov (should have went the other way with McCabe and take a spare d to buy Markov healing time...simple mistakes cost championships). Not thrilled with Bulin either (his stats, likely high GAA, won't jive with Kipper's and Luongo's) but fortunately a couple backups (with started potential...whether by play or injury) fell to me.

I loved the draft thoughts above and thought I would chime in. I have never played in a league with hits or blocks, so I am definitely outclassed in this league. Most of my decisions were made with my gut; which may explain some of the madness. I had the luck or lack of goalie luck with the 1st overall pick. It is the toughest position to draft as your queue list gets wilted down to nothing when it comes back to you.

    1. (1) Alex Ovechkin (Was - LW)

    1st pick. No brainer.

    2. (28) Craig Anderson (Col - G)
    3. (29) Jonathan Quick (LA - G)

Goalies were going out at a premium rate. I was lucky to get some solid tenders in net. Anderson is playing for a contract and is on the exact same team that helped him to 35+ wins. I cannot see why Anderson cannot get 30+ wins and solid stats.

For this year, I have made the calculated risk that Quick is the starter for this season; whether Bernier makes the team or not. I was teeter-tottering between Ward and Quick, but I eventually decided that Doughty, Johnson, Mitchell and Scuderi would be more dependable than the D in Carolina.

    4. (56) Dan Boyle (SJ - D)
    5. (57) Dion Phaneuf (Tor - D)

This is my first gut move of the day. I was faced with a couple stud C, middling wingers or elite D. I didn't see a reason to go after forwards now as the gap in points was about 10. So I thought I would force a D run so that I could get some quality forwards on the way back. Boyle is a Pts and PPP beast and Captain Dion will be the multi-cat stud for my franchise; 50+ points, 100+ PIM, 200 hits and 100 blocks is what yahoo says.

    6. (84) Nicklas Lidstrom (Det - D)
    7. (85) Paul Stastny (Col - C)

I was shocked that everyone was still plucking forwards at this stage; especially wingers. This left some unbelievable C depth on the draft board; where I quickly snatched up Stastny. I wanted to further lock up Pts and PPP, so I nabbed an unknown 40 year-old that is predicted to maybe hit 50+ points this year; just maybe he will hit his upside this year.

    8. (112) Taylor Hall (Edm - LW)
    9. (113) Rick DiPietro (NYI - G)

With my D and G quite set, I went feasting on the remaining forwards. At pick 112, I drank the Dobber kool-aid and accepted that 70 points from the 1st overall pick is a possibility. 70 points at this position would be an absolute steal. With 3 G and other teams either having one or zero goalies at this point, I decided to take a chance on another starter to throw some rubber at. I expected some sort of goalie run and didn't want to chance on having just 2 starters. This was definitely a boom or bust round for me as I went with some bold gut picks here.

    10. (140) Marc Savard (Bos - C)
    11. (141) Alex Tanguay (Cgy - LW)

I had Savard very, very high my initial rankings. To get him 5 or 6 rounds from where he should be is a calculated risk that I am willing to take. The worse case scenario is that Savard never returns and I park him on my IR and I grab a depth replacement. If I hit on this pick, I get a point-per-game stud. The Tanguay pick may be a couple rounds too early, but when I noticed the terrible LW depth on the draft board, I wanted to make sure I got my man.

    12. (168) Olli Jokinen (Cgy - C)
    13. (169) Jason Pominville (Buf - RW)

At this point, most of the teams had already fleshed out their forwards; especially wingers, so I knew I had to make a C pick between Jokinen or Plekanec. I just reasoned that at worse, I would lose 10-15 points, but Jokinen's hits may offset the point differential. I know, I should have been more prepared in this draft, but I had to go with my gut on this one. The best case scenario is that Joker gets back to his point-per-game and multi-cat days. It is funny how I never took a whiff at RW until now. In Pommer, I get a sure-fire, top 75, point player. I have not idea why he fell so far.

    14. (196) Brad Boyes (StL - RW)
    15. (197) Brian Boucher (Phi - G)

To round out my RW, I take on another reclamation project in Boyes. I really believe that he will hit 25+ goals this year on an improved St. Louis team. I reluctantly looked for a 4th G because my 3rd G is a glass pane. I figured that since Leighton has never played a full season before, the best case would be Leighton and Boucher splitting time in net on a good Philly team.

    16. (224) David Clarkson (NJ - RW)
    17. (225) Dan Carcillo (Phi - LW)

What am I missing on my team? PIM and HITS! I target two crazy men at this slot. I am not sure how Clarkson fits into NJ, but if he scores a top 6 role or a plum spot in front of the net on the PP, I love this pick.

    18. (252) Joni Pitkanen (Car - D)

The last pick was not a pretty one. The player I was targeting was picked just moments before me and Pitkanen was my back-up plan. I am just hoping that Carolina turns its +/- around to the positive side this year.

Overall, my G leaves for something to be desired and I have a lot of reclamation projects that I am banking on to hit. On the bright side, Ovy will keep my competitive each and every week and I have some decent bargaining chips on my D.

    1. (8) Mike Green (Was - D)

Given our goalie heavy league, grabbing Miller or Brodeur was tempting here but I couldn't let Green fall any further.

    2. (21) Tomas Vokoun (Fla - G)

Needed a stud G and he fit the bill.

    3. (36) Carey Price (Mon - G)

There was a lot of good guys on the board that I was targeting (mainly Kane and Keith) but I figured starting 3G each week I should try to grab another tender. I was aiming for Hiller or Ward but they all got scooped up shortly before my pick. Left with Backstrom or Price I figured I'd gamble on Price living up to expectations.

    4. (49) Rick Nash (Cls - LW,RW)

I wanted Keith with this pick really bad but Bottom Feeders took him. Oh well, Nash is a pretty good consolation and dual eligibility doesn't hurt.

    5. (64) Shea Weber (Nsh - D)

Probably some guys I should have picked instead, but after losing out on Keith I was targeting Chara hard and he went a few picks before so I went for the best defenseman available. His goal totals don't hurt either.

    6. (77) Marian Hossa (Chi - RW)

Thought this pick was an absolute steal.

    7. (92) Steve Downie (TB - RW)

Wanted Sharp with this pick but the Weasels took him. Oh well, Downie is a good pick in this format.

    8. (105) Dan Ellis (TB - G)

Figured I should grab my 3rd tender and he was the closest thing to a starting goalie that wasn't injury prone.

    9. (120) Andrei Markov (Mon - D)

No brainer to grab Markov this late.

    10. (133) James Neal (Dal - LW)

Wanted to take Brown here but I already had Hossa and Downie on the RW so I figured I'd hope he would fall more (I was wrong). Neal was a pretty good 2nd LW this late though.

    11. (148) Mikko Koivu (Min - C)

Taking this guy this late was a no-brainer as well.

    12. (161) Derek Roy (Buf - C)

Needed another C, fit the bill.

    13. (176) Mark Giordano (Cgy - D)

Wanted O. Jokinen with this pick but Nieuwy stole him. Settled for Giordano and his huge PIM/Point combo.

    14. (189) Mike Smith (TB - G)

I was looking at guys like JDD, Pavelec, but I figured I'd play it safe and lock up the Tampa Tandem as I had most my positions filled.

    15. (204) Jordan Staal (Pit - C)

This late in the draft I figured I'd take a gamble this late in the draft and hope he ends up with Malkin. If not he still gets me some SHP.

    16. (217) Troy Brouwer (Chi - RW)

Wanted Seabrook really bad with this pick but he went right before I got to pick. Brouwer was a bit of a sleeper pick for me and I know I probably could have waited till the last round of the draft but after Seabrook was taken I was scrambling to pick so I just grabbed him early.

    17. (232) Johnny Boychuk (Bos - D)

With Wideman out I see him having a huge season. Plus he gets me some Hits and Blocks.

    18. (245) Tyler Seguin (Bos - C)

There were lots of pretty good guys left but I figured I'd take a gamble and go for the guy with the potential of putting up big points.

Overall I really like the way my D turned out (would have loved to get Keith though), I'm happy with my RW especially considering the Hossa steal, my LW isn't too shabby, Happy with my centers considering where I drafted them, and my tending isn't stellar but it's serviceable.

    Lemme jump into this madness.
Disclosure: Already half in the bag at draft time, I failed to notice hits and blocks as two categories. Whatever.

    Team: The Dudes

    1. (3) Evgeni Malkin (Pit - C)
Felt weird to even have such a high pick, as all 11 of my previous league drafts I've ever been in, I have never had a shot at a top 3 pick. Makes it a no brainer, and with the dreams of him possibly getting winger status at some point it's even better.

    2. (26) Jaroslav Halak (StL - G)
    3. (31) Semyon Varlamov (Was - G)
At these two picks, I had to grab two goalies, as they were flyin off the board. Varly was/is a risk, but I had full plans on letting the draft ride as far as I could before grabbing Neuvy. One main thing I like to make sure of, is that my main starting Gs are in different leagues. That limits the amount of games that occur where you have them on opposite sides of the ice. Figured I'd be very happy with these two IF I could get Neuvy later in the draft.

    4. (54) Alexander Semin (Was - RW)
At this point, I know that I should be going LW, but Ryan and Marleau just flew off the board. I'll take Semin at 54 all day.

    5. (59) Jeff Carter (Phi - C)
Grabbed a 2nd C that could get W eligibility. I think he's set for a huge year, and he brings me huge numbers in multiple cats.

    6. (82) Simon Gagne (TB - LW)
Meet my starting LW. ***facepalm*** Hope he stays healthy.

    7. (87) Lubomir Visnovsky (Anh - D)
Prorated stats once he got to ANA: 25G,41A,66P,273 SOG. Let me introduce my sleeper starting D man.

    8. (110) Michal Neuvirth (Was - G)
So I reached the point where I couldn't let Neuvy slip any farther. I had to handcuff the Caps goaltending. Why? JGold was picking next, and if anyone reads School of Block(and I know most of you do), you'll know he loves Neuvy's odds of grabbing the starting spot. Well, I love Neuvy too. So I invited him to The Dudes Guild, and he accepted. Caps starters locked up.

    9. (115) P.K. Subban (Mon - D)
Looked ready last post season. Trained like a beast all offseason. Multiple teammates saying he's super legit. Markov = injuries. I'm good with this one.

    10. (138) Tim Thomas (Bos - G)
Here's another sleeper of mine. He's gonna see starts. You don't pay someone $6 mill to pick up pucks. Rask is one of the most technically sound Gs in the league. But with Thomas' salary, he'll see games, and put up nice stats, to generate interest.

    11. (143) Tyler Ennis (Buf - C,LW)
Needed another LW. Figured while I'm at it(by it, I mean going total risk reward at a starting spot), might as well swing for the fences. Some people seem to love him and he had a great post season, also.

    12. (166) Erik Karlsson (Ott - D)
Much like LW, my D is total high risk, high reward. What can I say, I think he's as ready as PK. Not as great a situation, but tis ok.

    13. (171) Jiri Hudler (Det - RW)
Even though I feel Carter will get RW eligibility, I can't wait. So I grabbed yet another sleeper. Has Babcock said he'll be 3rd line? Yeah, to start. But injuries coupled with Hudler's offensive talents will move him up to 2nd line at some point. Plus he'll see bunches off PP time. That works for me.

    14. (194) Andy McDonald (StL - LW)
Trawling for more LW help. Has necessary tools to excel. In a great place to excel. Keep with boom/bust LW thing.

    15. (199) David Krejci (Bos - C)
Savard's having issues. Hoping Malkin/Carter get W status, could use a guy that could be 1st line C.

    16. (222) Kristian Huselius (Cls - LW)
    Gettin late. Getting sleepy. LW.

    17. (227) Kevin Bieksa (Van - D)
Had him on top of my queue for a while. Need to fill out my team with 2 more D.

    18. (250) Andy Greene (NJ - D)
1st team PP guy. Rollin the dice.

Overall, I'm cool with my squad. I have a lot of players I usually wouldn't pick. Oodles of players that I don't own in any leagues. I'm excited to see if I can improve on my runner up finish last season.

Being in the second spot really frustrated me because I knew I would get stuck with Crosby and then lose out on a lot of the top-tier goalies (I had kind of goalie-centric setup with three G's in the starting lineup). Not that there's anything wrong with Crosby, but yeah. I would have seemed crazy for grabbing Luongo or Miller at the #2 spot so I made the safe bet.

When my second-round pick rolled around, the only true workhorse starter with no real threat from a backup was Ward and Turco. I rolled with Turco first because I figured he had more potential to post a lower GAA and a better save percentage thanks to the d in front of him. I exhaled a sigh of relief when Ward was still available at 30. I'm not fully confident in Ward and Turco as a tandem, but I figured I would make up for it with a solid third goalie and then a 4th later in the draft.

I will be honest by saying that I am so busy scouting and covering goalies that I do not have the greatest strategy for drafting forwards. I really just fly by the seat of my pants and keep Dobber's Guide right by my side as the draft rolls along. I was really stoked to get Iginla, Lecavalier, Briere and Elias as my next set of picks. Drafting two centers in my first seven picks is pretty risky, especially since Elias is duel-positioned wing and center. But Lecavalier, I feel, is going to have a great year on a much improved TB team.

Drafting Bernier at 111 overall was a mistake. I should have let him slide a little lower. But my thoughts are that he makes the team out of pre-season. Now that Harding is done for the season and Leighton might have a back issue, I'm hoping the Wild go after Ersberg or the Kings just realize he's nowhere close to being as valuable as Bernier and they drop him down to Manchester to play with Zatkoff. I watched Bernier VERY closely here in Denver last week and he is simply ready for the NHL. Another AHL season will be a waste of development. It's a risk, but could be a huge payoff. And I needed someone with the potential of having a huge payoff to help boost the Turco/Ward tandem. Again, not the smartest, but being risky can pay off big time.

Claude Giroux at 170 overall I thought was a steal. He's already shown me two goals, one in the shootout, where he's had totally sick hands.

Ondrej Pavelec at 195. I have no clue why a legit talent like him would slip so low, but I was ecstatic to get him so late. He's a bonafide rock star. He's not consistent at all, but for a fourth goalie ... yeah ... totally boosts the overall value of my four-goalie tandem. I will be selective in starting him, on home ice against weaker teams. And if he gets more consistent, he'll be the steal of the draft for goalies.

I thought Orpik at 223 was a steal as well.

I wanted to take Brett Clark as my final choice since I think he flies under the radar and will once again be one of the top shot blockers, but I went with Brandon Yip instead. With Mueller out of the lineup, I think he could have a breakout season.

It was a really fun draft with a lot of great managers and I am hoping to just make it to the playoffs, especially since my goaltending is not as strong as I wanted it to be!

    Default 3 G's

I didn't realize there would be 3 goalies starting. I only have 3 total. Will this be a big issue for getting enough starts per week or what about if one of my goalies gets injured?

I have Lethonen, Rinne, and C. Mason. The waiver looks thin.
