Even the players themselves refer to them as Assistant captains many times - it seems so much more natural even though it's incorrect.
And a huge amount of people write "should of" instead of "should've" all the time. Still doesn't make it right and still extremely annoying.

HOw can Toews, Lidstrom, Crosby not be seen as the best. They are the last 3 to captain the eventual cup champions and to top it all off they are all elite talents. Lidstrom is a legend, but once he's gone I think you have to go with Toews then Crosby unless one of the others on the list step up.
As for Richards, he's an HM at this point. All the crap about locker-room chaos in Philly last season has been forgotten since the team's run to the SC Finals. A good captain wouldn't be in charge of a team where so much BS and instability was reported most of the year. The team went through a coaching change and barely squeaked in to the playoffs when they had a team that was a top 5 on paper in the pre-season. I imaging there's some dysfunctional under-current still with Pronger in the room, which Richards would have to address.

I have to go with Lidstrom here. He's been kicking ass for too long.
That's a misnomer, just because the guy captained a team to a cup final does not mean he's one of the best captains in the NHL. Dave Andreychuk captained Tampa, Rod the Bod was a good captain but he wasnt one of the best in the league when Carolina won the cup, no one would have argued that Derian Hatcher was the best captain in the league. Captaining your team to a stanley cup final does not necessarily mean the you're an elite captain, it's important to look at what the captain brings and balance that against what the team brings/needs.
Iggy brought more to the table as a captain when Calgary lost to Tampa than Andreychuk brought, but Andreychuk was captain because the Lightning needed a veteran presence on a youngish team whose stars weren't quite ready until after the cup run to take on captaincy.
You also don't need to be an elite talent. Scott Stevens wasn't an elite offensive talent when he lead the Devils to their cups, but you would be hard pressed to find someone who would not have argued that he was an elite captain. The intangibles a captain brings mean as much as their skill level.
Toews, Richards, Crosby, Doan, Lidstrom, Iginla, Morrow and Alfredsson pop out to me the most.
