Varlamov - he will get every opportunity to show what he can do before Neuvirth even gets a start. That being said, I am not sold on Varly. But I would take him way before Neuvirth.

Did you watch AHL playoff? Neuvirth has been outstanding! I think MyOtherSock said it right. Despite Varlamov's play, I would still be nervous about the situation. Even Justin (GoalieGuild) have a feeling we could see Neuvirth sooner than later in WSH.

Pete, if there's a chance you can have both, I would definitely do.

I think Varlamov's situation is very dicey. I think Theo could come through with a huge season, motivated by his teammates' support after that tragic loss of his son, although he could just as easily falter under the circumstances. My guess is Theo could get traded at the deadline when his $4.5M salary is affordable to other squads in need of proven goaltending, but I highly doubt he'll be bought out this year. Then there's Neuvirth, and he could just as easily have a strong camp and put Varly at risk of not starting. Varlamov has some plusses (support of Ovechkin/Semin, playoff performance pre-Pens series) but still it's entirely unclear.

If I'm an owner looking to a goalie to help me win this year, there are lots of goalies that I would take over Varlamov. On the other hand, if you already have good goaltending for the short term and are picking a goalie as a future stud keeper, Varlamov then becomes a great option.

The situation with Hiller is similar, but less cloudy since he's older and more proven than Varlamov (I think he won the Swiss league version of the Vezina two years in a row before coming over to NA). The risk there is that Giggy bounces back (good chance of that) and Hiller is not the starter, but after this year (and possibly as soon as the trade deadline), things should shake out and I would think he's either starting in Anaheim (i.e., Giggy traded) or he's starting somewhere else (Hiller traded) - probably the former is more likely.

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

    Unhappy

You pretty much summed it up Ross , and the hiller /Guigere comparrison is good.Remember Raycrofts' 1st year , Price and his big star , even Budga got some hype early on.Varlamov looked great in the play-offs and seeemed to handle the pressure well but , reg. season is a different story and there are 80+ games!I'm a Varly /Theo owner in a keep 6 pool. What to do?Well not much choice either keep both and grab Neuvirth later or off the wire through the season or drop the tandem and keep guys like Filatov, Voracek , Grabavski , J.J. Team is in my sig , suggestions anyone.I start drafting at the star of the 2nd rnd. , 90 players will be protected , about half goalies and def.So I'm in a tough spot , Murphys' Law for sure , if i keep them they'll flop , if I drop them they'll flourish, lol!HELP!

not breakin any ground...but i think its clear theo will get the first and every chance to succeed - he clearly wasnt a very good goalie last year though ( or for that matter the last couple of years ) and i dont think there is any way to predict how he can respond, even in a "walk year" to his personal tragedy

varlamov has a few things workin for him...as ross pointed out, i dont think the support of ovechkin can be underestimated, his playoff run ( as a varly owner i almost wished they ended up losin the ranger series and there wouldnt be such a sour tatse in my mouth bout him ) and the fact that they brought in artus irbe as a goalie coach ( i have to think that was specifically for varly ) and i also think its an "easier" move for the caps...at least intially to send neuvirth down to start the season even if he out plays varly in camp ( thats just a guess on my part )

i think when all is said and done...varly will get the first crack after theo to run w/ the job...BB has shown hes not affraid to lean on young players and rookies - but if along w/ theo he falters i think we could very well see neuvirth at some point this season - either way for the caps its a nice problem to have...not so much for fantasy owners

Neuv should be a good one, but I can't see how they leap frog Varly to go to him. Yes, he could outshine and steal it, but too many things going for Varly. I would think he'll be splitting early and by Xmas, have the job outright.

Which playoffs? The NHL playoffs which Varly lost due to a couple of bad games, or the AHL playoffs, in which Neuvirth carried his team to victory with stunning play?

Honestly, Neuvirth may be more talented. He is not as high on the totem pole, but he is great.

If it weren't for Nuevirth, the Manitoba Moose would have been AHL champions last season. If it weren't for Varlamov, the Washington Capitals MAY have been Stanley Cup Champions last season.

Nuevirth may be playing in the AHL, but the key here is that he is the starter. Varlamov will play, but half time(at best). Also, in my mind, Varlamov's mechanics are extremely flawed, while Nuevirth looks smooth as glass.

    just my $.02

Now that you've got em both; i guess the whole thread is a moot point, lol!
