No, I still voted for Team 10, but the goaltending for Team 1 'could' surprise and then they would be tough to beat.

    Crazynuck League Draft: 3C 3LW 3RW 4D 2G no IR or Bench
    G=1 A=1 W=2 SO=2

    Round 1

    1 Alexander Ovechkin Crazynuck
    2 Evgeni Malkin Shallowfrozenwater
    3 Sidney Crosby Smoothfun
    4 Mike Green Nordique
    5 Dany Heatley Chic
    6 Ilya Kovalchuk UW
    7 Jarome Iginla The Comish
    8 Evgeni Nabokov Joos
    9 Roberto Luongo Ridinryan
    10 Martin Brodeur Hockeyislife
    11 Mikka Kiprusoff Maplemarty
    12 Henrik Lundqvist Gongshow

Before I logged onto yahoo I hoped for anything but a top 3 pick. Just my luck I get the #1 pick. With Malkin and Crosby being C’s, its between AO and a goalie. Being a points only I have a tier 1 goalie between 95-105 pts. AO is good for 110+ so I pick him. The first surprise is Heatley at #5, guess the trade has really increased his value. With goalies not picked until #8 I’m starting to think a decent goalie will drop to me.

    Round 2

    13 Marc-Andre Fleury Gongshow
    14 Joe Thornton Maplemarty
    15 Nicklas Backstrom (Was) Hockeyislife
    16 Pavel Datsyuk Ridinryan
    17 Vincent Lecavalier Joos
    18 Tim Thomas The Comish
    19 Ryan Getzlaf UW
    20 Andrei Markov Chic
    21 Cam Ward Nordique
    22 Niklas Backstrom Smoothfun
    23 Ryan Miller Shallowfrozenwater
    24 Zach Parise Crazynuck

Normally I would take a goalie back to back in this position but all my tier 1 & 2 goalies are gone leaving me with a tier 3 80pt goalie. I decide to change my strategy and grab the top LW available. Its between Parise and D.Sedin…. I fight my homer urge and pick Parise.

    Round 3

    25 Dan Boyle Crazynuck
    26 Rick Nash Shallowfrozenwater
    27 Corey Perry Smoothfun
    28 Jeff Carter Nordique
    29 Martin St.Louis Chic
    30 Patrick Kane UW
    31 Daniel Sedin The Comish
    32 Steve Mason Joos
    33 Thomas Vanek Ridinryan
    34 Alexander Semin Hockeyislife
    35 Nicklas Lidstrom Maplemarty
    36 Henrik Zetterberg Gongshow

Most pools encounter the 3rd rd rush and I didn’t want to miss out with 22 picks in between. Streit is my #3 rated D who gets picked lower than he should in pts only pools. He finished 3 points behind Lidstrom, missed 8 games on a horrible team and will play with the likes of Tavares this season. I take a chance and hope he slips to me next round. The Heatley hype plays a factor in my pick of Boyle.

    Round 4

    37 Sergei Gonchar Gongshow
    38 Dion Phaneuf Maplemarty
    39 Marc Savard Hockeyislife
    40 Daniel Alfredsson Ridinryan
    41 Eric Staal Joos
    42 Jason Spezza The Comish
    43 Brian Rafalski UW
    44 Shane Doan Chic
    45 Ray Emery Nordique
    46 Patrick Marleau Smoothfun
    47 Chris Osgood Shallowfrozenwater
    48 Henrik Sedin Crazynuck

The usual suspects have been picked with most of the top wingers gone GMs start the BPA approach and the C’s start to go. I’m eyeing G/D with my next two picks. Emery and Osgood go and I start to rethink my goalie strategy. Varlamov is still there but with no bench I can’t risk a goalie splitting 50/50 and decide to wait another round for Price, Turco and Huet as it seems like everyone has forgot about goalies. I go with the BPA approach and pick H.Sedin.

    Round 5

    49 Mark Streit Crazynuck
    50 Zdeno Chara Shallowfrozenwater
    51 Semyon Varlamov Smoothfun
    52 Bobby Ryan Nordique
    53 Brian Campbell Chic
    54 Scott Niedermayer UW
    55 Shea Weber The Comish
    56 Michael Cammalleri Joos
    57 Ryan Whitney Ridinryan
    58 Chris Pronger Hockeyislife
    59 Marian Gaborik Maplemarty
    60 Ales Hemsky Gongshow

Streit falls and I snag him up. The D rush starts again and I’m happy to be at the start of the rush once again. After rounds of joking about playing Gaborik roulette, Maplemarty deciedes to roll the dice. Enjoy the injuries.

    Round 6

    61 Niklas Kronwall Gongshow
    62 Brad Boyes Maplemarty
    63 Marty Turco Hockeyislife
    64 Marian Hossa Ridinryan
    65 Devin Setoguchi Joos
    66 Carey Price The Comish
    67 Olli Jokinen UW
    68 Pekka Rinne Chic
    69 Jason Pominville Nordique
    70 Jay Bouwmeester Smoothfun
    71 Alex Kovalev Shallowfrozenwater
    72 JP Dumont Crazynuck

The draft was looking good until this point. 2 of my 3 goalies go this round and the RWs start to fly off the board. I caught the 2nd D rush but missed the 2nd RW rush. At this point I need to go RW and Dumont is one of my favorite under-rated players.

    Round 7

    73 Jonathan Toews Crazynuck
    74 Simon Gagne Shallowfrozenwater
    75 Duncan Keith Smoothfun
    76 Anze Kopitar Nordique
    77 Mike Ribeiro Chic
    78 Brent Burns UW
    79 Tomas Kaberle The Comish
    80 Paul Stastny Joos
    81 Cam Barker Ridinryan
    82 Derek Roy Hockeyislife
    83 Alex Tanguay Maplemarty
    84 Paul Kariya Gongshow

I’m debating about grabbing Huet but the lure of a top scoring forward blinds me. With the clock winding down I hesitate and pick Toews instead of Ribeiro. Not surprising Ribs gets picked up a few picks after. The turning point of the draft takes place at the end of round 7. Gongshow picks the top two remaining LW in Kariya and Morrow B2B and the chat goes crazy. There is a big gap to the next best LW and GMs decide to focus on specific positions.

    Round 8

    85 Brenden Morrow Gongshow
    86 Cristobal Huet Maplemarty
    87 Patrik Elias Hockeyislife
    88 Martin Havlat Ridinryan
    89 Tobias Enstrom Joos
    90 Mike Richards The Comish
    91 Tomas Vokoun UW
    92 Dennis Wideman Chic
    93 Loui Eriksson Nordique
    94 Nik Antropov Smoothfun
    95 Phil Kessel Shallowfrozenwater
    96 Ilya Bryzgalov Crazynuck

With Huet and Vokoun picked I finally give in and take Bryzgalov. I’m not thrilled but he’s a #1 goalie with little competition. A goalies team doesn’t matter to me as long as he gets me 30 wins. The slider of the draft “Richards” gets picked up by Comish. Injury prone players scared everyone and if he can stay healthy Richards could win Comish the pool.

    Round 9

    97 Johan Franzen Crazynuck
    98 David Krejci Shallowfrozenwater
    99 Chris Kunitz Smoothfun
    100 Kris Letang Nordique
    101 PM Bouchard Chic
    102 Alexander Frolov UW
    103 Slava Kozlov The Comish
    104 Dustin Brown Joos
    105 Jonas Hiller Ridinryan
    106 Claude Giroux Hockeyislife
    107 Patrick O’Sullivan Maplemarty
    108 Lubomir Visnovsky Gongshow

With 2C, 2LW,2D I decide to even out my lineup and grab Franzen. With the Hossa and Hudler gone, Franzen should see a lot of time on the top line and PP. Shallowfrozenwater takes two injured Bruins B2B. If they recover quickly he will be in good shape. The pick of Kunitz sets off multiple “NOOOOOOOOO’s”.

    Round 10

    109 Brian Gionta Gongshow
    110 Kristian Huselius Maplemarty
    111 David Booth Hockeyislife
    112 Mikko Koivu Ridinryan
    113 Vaclav Prospal Joos
    114 Kimmo Timonen The Comish
    115 Ray Whitney UW
    116 Chris Mason Chic
    117 John Tavares Nordique
    118 Jordan Staal Smoothfun
    119 Teemu Selanne Shallowfrozenwater
    120 Ryan Suter Crazynuck

At this point there are no good goalies remaining and I have targeted Bulin in a late round as my 2nd goalie. My focus is on a 3rd D and filling my last LW spot. Suter looks to be my best choice and I hope to have Erik Johnson as my 4th.

    Round 11

    121 Milan Michalek Crazynuck
    122 Sheldon Souray Shallowfrozenwater
    123 Brad Richards Smoothfun
    124 Joe Corvo Nordique
    125 Joffrey Lupul Chic
    126 Martin Erat UW
    127 Danny Briere The Comish
    128 Nathan Horton Joos
    129 Scott Hartnell Ridinryan
    130 Erik Johnson Hockeyislife
    131 Steven Stamkos Maplemarty
    132 Mike Knuble Gongshow

While I have the worst D, I have the best LW in AO and Parise. Looking back I should have picked up Kariya or Morrow but LW was not an issue at that point of the draft. Michalek will slip in nicely to my 3rd slot and if he finds chemistry with Spezza he could be a nice surprise. Comish once again picks up a player that has slipped too far. EJ gets picked up and I head back to the drawing board for my 4th D.

    Round 12

    133 Andy McDonald Gongshow
    134 Bryan McCabe Maplemarty
    135 Bryan Little Hockeyislife
    136 Tom Gilbert Ridinryan
    137 Andrei Kostitsyn Joos
    138 Jamie Langenbrunner The Comish
    139 Zach Bogosian UW
    140 Derick Brassard Chic
    141 David Perron Nordique
    142 Peter Mueller Smoothfun
    143 Kris Versteeg Shallowfrozenwater
    144 Nikolai Khabibulin Crazynuck

I was looking at McDonald and Briere as my 3rd C but they were both gone. I always avoid injury prone players unless it€™s a late pick. I put Connolly in my queue. Its down to UW and myself to pick a goalie and with Bulin being the only good goalie left I can€™t take a chance to get stuck with Lehtonen.

    Round 13

    145 Matt Niskanen Crazynuck
    146 Travis Zajac Shallowfrozenwater
    147 Filip Kuba Smoothfun
    148 Jaroslav Spacek Nordique
    149 Marek Zidlicky Chic
    150 Mikael Samuelsson UW
    151 Michael Ryder The Comish
    152 Wade Redden Joos
    153 Scott Gomez Ridinryan
    154 Kevin Bieksa Hockeyislife
    155 Patrick Sharp Maplemarty
    156 Stephen Weiss Gongshow

I had Samuelsson as my last RW choice next round, hoping he will click with the Sedins. Maybe UW knew about my Lehtonen comment and decided to steal Samuelsson away from me. With RW and C covered, all I had left was D. It was between Bieksa and Niskanen. With so many D in Vancouver and Zubov gone in Dallas my choice was easy.

    Round 14

    157 Steve Sullivan Gongshow
    158 Ed Jovanovski Maplemarty
    159 Rob Blake Hockeyislife
    160 Alex Goligoski Ridinryan
    161 Marc-Edouard Vlasic Joos
    162 Jason Blake The Comish
    163 Joe Pavelski UW
    164 Wojtek Wolski Chic
    165 Milan Hejduk Nordique
    166 Keith Ballard Smoothfun
    167 Joni Pitkanen Shallowfrozenwater
    168 David Backes Crazynuck

Samuelsson was more of a homer pick and if there is an injury to the top 6 in Stl Backes could come close to repeating last season. Everyone is looking to fill their last roster spot and the majority needs to fill their LW. Luckily I covered that off a few rounds ago.

    Round 15

    169 Tim Connolly Crazynuck
    170 Fedor Tyutin Shallowfrozenwater
    171 Milan Lucic Smoothfun
    172 Alexei Ponikarovsky Nordique
    173 Shawn Horcoff Chic
    174 Kari Lehtonen UW
    175 John-Michael Liles The Comish
    176 Drew Doughty Joos
    177 Ville Leino Ridinryan
    178 Ryan Malone Hockeyislife
    179 Justin Williams Maplemarty
    180 Chris Campoli Gongshow

With so many prepared GMs we flew through the draft in 1hr 45 mins. The problem was almost every pick was followed multiple angry replies. Some GMs will need to avoid injuries while others will need to pray for their goalies to have miracle seasons. This should be a close race all season long and I look forward to October 1st.

Good read crazy, I enjoyed that. It's always interesting to get insight on people's thoughts and strategies during a draft. It's been said already but this was for sure a tough but very enjoyable draft. I have never liked drafting last, but I was overall happy with how the draft went and how my team turned out. Must admit I did enjoy everyone's reactions when I took Kariya and Morrow back to back, I almost went a different route but with no LW yet and such a gap between my picks it really was a must for me. As crazy said though, it was hilarious to read the chat because after every pick pretty much, everyone was swearing and complaining that their pick was taken. Looking forward to the start of the season boys.

Looking back, I probably should have taken Kariya instead of Derek Roy in round 7; there were plenty of good centers available still but LW was already thin; When Gongshow scooped Kariya and Morrow, and Mapletreemarty snagging Tanguay my options were limited. Hopefully that one faux pas won't be my undoing.

Thanks for the analysis Crazy.... this will be one exciting pool

For what it's worth, I would have taken D.Roy over Kariya as well. I also wanted Kariya, but he is made of peanut brittle. Kariya fell to where I might have taken him though. He was on my radar when he got nabbed. Roy will give you a nice safe return and in this pool that's worth more than the five or so more points Kariya MIGHT score IF he stays out of the infirmary.

It would be nice to get feedback from the other GMs. Especially the regrets in not taking a particular position at a specific round in the draft.

    My regrets:
    - not taking a goalie in round 4. I should never take C before picking my first G or RW.
    - taking Toews with 2 openings at C before morrow with 1 opening at LW. Fill the wing before C even if you already have 2LW and more openings at C.
    - don't draft in the top 3

30-35 wins and a few shutouts. He has one year under his belt... Look at what happened to Price is year two. Mason should not be over rated.

Yeah I'm with you Crazy, I don't own him in any one year leagues because of that very reason. He'll get drafted too high for me in most leagues.
