If he doesn't make it there, he won't make it anywhere.

Not sure why you say that, NY is one of wort places for young forwards. But hopefully change of scenery will work for him.

How did he make it by so many teams on waivers. Cant believe he wasn’t claimed by any of the teams below the rangers in the standings

He grew up in Staten Island so maybe coming home works out for him.

Only 6 teams passed on him haha.

Wonder if anyone else put in a claim. As a Kaliyev fan, not sure NY is the place to work out for him.

Islanders could use any player. Their offense is pathetic most nights.

Yep, that was my point. The Rangers are near the bottom of the standings so it's not like a lot of teams had a crack at him.

Personally, I don't have much faith in him turning it around in NY.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Kaliyev IMO. We'll see.

Yes - I am well aware of that - haha.

How do teams like San Jose/Chicago/NYI not take a chance on him.

They have 23/23 man rosters and need to send someone down as a result of claiming him, and they seem set on their 3 top RW?

SJS - Zetterlund, Will Smith, Tyler Toffoli
    Chicago - Dach, Foligno, TT
    NYI - Barzal, Palmieri, Cizikas/Fasching

I don't know why they wouldn't think of claiming him for their LW, but those teams LW:
    SJS - Eklund, Graf, Kostin
    Chicago - Bertuzzi, Hall, Mikheyev
    NYI - Lee, Duclair, Tsyplakov

SJS already has a bunch of centers/RW playing LW. The wingers in Chicago, those are 5 of their top 6 cap hit forwards.
    12 Team, H2H, Keep 6 (in Bold)
G, A, Pts, PPP, FW, SOG, Hits, Blocks
W, Saves, S%, GAA, Game Started
    2C, 2LW, 2RW, 4D, 1Util, 2G, 5BN, 2IR, 1IR+, 1NA

    C: Trocheck, Horvat, Kopitar
    LW: Hughes (C), Dubois (C), McCann (C)
RW: Batherson (LW), Ovechkin (LW), Rackell (C,LW,RW), Duchene (C)
D: Makar, Bouchard, Fox, Seider, Werenski
    Util:
    G: Vasilevskiy, Thompson, Kuemper
    IR+: Tippet (LW,RW)

I feel like he might still get another chance if he doesn't pan out, but probably on a two-way contract. I agree though that his landing spot won't do him any favors, which is too bad since in the right place my sense is he could put up numbers comparable to what Tippett has done in Philly.

Why? He goes to a team perennially in need of a RW and one with a pure shoot-first mentality sorely missed since Vatrano left.

I understand NYR has had a bad go lately but people are getting really hung up on it. We all know too much talent still on this roster for this not to correct. Blues were in last place on New Year's Day the year they won it all and that's not me saying NYR wins a Cup but the script can flip real quick.

They have scored 12 over the last three games. Arthur is absolutely going to get a top-six look and my money is on with Panarin at some point because Laffy is ice f*cking cold and the added benefit of most likely speaking Russian since he's Uzbeki.

A lot of what if's but this could become a HR very easily for Drury if Valiyev figures it out.
