I think it will be a 60/40 time share for Blackwood for the rest of the season.
Right now, Georgiev's owners are sad and Blackwood's owners are happy. But don't be too happy. This is another short term solution for the Avalanche. Blackwood is 28 and never been a decent 1st goalie. He's UFA at the end of the season. He could sign an extension if he plays well for the rest of the year, but right now, Avalanche still have two backups goalies. Blackwood and Wedgewood are not better than Georgiev, Grubauer or Kuemper. These goalies were all gamblings.
Enjoy Blackwood's new production for this year and maybe one or two more years, but if you are an owner and Blackwood gives you a lot of points in the next year, consider to do a sell high because Avalanche will still probably need a new goalie sooner than later.
I completely agree with this. I think a few people in this thread are underestimating what Blackwood brings to Colorado and what he could become. Blackwood is a big, athletic, toolsy goalie. He burst onto the scene in New Jersey a few years ago with a couple very solid seasons and was considered their goalie of the future. Blackwood's greatest problem has been inconsistency. I've rostered him and followed his career since picking him up early during his tenure in New Jersey. I don't know how many times he looked absolutely lights out holding his team in the game before a couple late goals completely changed his stat line for the game. It was quite frustrating as an owner. An injured heel, a lengthy recovery, and some covid vaccination issues IIRC led to some disgruntled feelings in New Jersey which led to a welcomed change of scenery for both NJ and Blackwood. I haven't followed his game closely in SJ but I've kept him on my 60-man roster just because I know if he ever received a good opportunity and could consistently put forth a 60-minute effort then you'd have a helluva goalie. I just picked him up in a 1-year league this weekend after his 49 save performance in Florida. Sure, he's not going to a great defensive team but you've gotta prefer his situation in Colorado a little more. I'm optimistic to say the least. Granted, we all know how weird goalies are.

Blackwood's the better goalie and should get the bulk of the starts going forward. The Avs have 53 games left. I expect him to start 30-35 of them
Saw an interesting note this morning.
On Dec 6, 1995 the Avs traded Andrei Kovalenko as part of a package for Patrick Roy. Now they trade his son for Mackenzie Blackwood in early Dec 2024.
Could Blackwood turn into the next Patrick Roy?![]()

Without me, it's only "aweso".
Great points- love that! And Ill also echo the closing statements- goalies are voodoo- there are SO many factors that seem to dictate their success- but for my money this is one of the biggest 180s to a guys value weve seen in an exceptionally long time- we'll see I guess...
Weekly hth league- 2c, 3w,1 ff (forward only flex), 4d, 1g, and one true flex. Sog/goal weighted for skaters: G4, A3, Sog1, PPP+1. +/- adds/minuses one for F/3 for D. Workhorse starters = GOLD!
We are a full dynasty keeper BUT we only protect 8 (9 if you miss playoffs)- which means that you can lose ONE player outside that range each year to the steal round.

Yea? Thats sort of my whole point... He thrived in a loosy goosy defensive system that allowed a ton of rubber on net. Now Im not sure any goalie LOVES that situation (or maybe some do- who knows)- but hes shown he can be a difference maker in that environment. Youre sort of saying the same thing I said. If anyone is going to thrive in Colorado (tough gig for any goalie)- it might just be the guy who thrived in SJs system. a .909 sv% with 3 GAA might not set the world on fire but its not too shabby either considering that team is essentially in year one of a tear it to the studs rebuild. Heck Georgievs highest sv% even when he was considered a "go to go guy" was a fairly cool 9.18. Ill spare you his stats this year but lets just say they are markedly worse...
In any case- you made your call- Ill leave you to it. I think this is one of the most exciting shifts in value at the goalie position in a long time- but who knows right? Goalies rarely do what theyre supposed to. My bigger point was that I think Blackwoods fantasy stock has been heavily impacted by "He let me down once already"-itis (not you perse- just a general vibe Im getting) and in my experience thats not a great barometer for where a guy ulktimately ends up as.
If Im wrong you can yell at the clouds about my tenure despite the fact I was here when the whole site was just little more than a ramblings page for our favourite THN contributor![]()

Has anyone read the Athletic article written by Jesse Granger?
I found 2 interesting quotes about the 2 goalies Colorado traded for from their GM:
About Blackwood: “We’re excited about Mackenzie,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said following the trade on Monday. “We certainly believe he’s a solid starter in this league, and we have (metrics) that we feel back that up. We’re excited to add him.”
About Wedgewood: “We think with Scott Wedgewood, there’s a lot of (former Avalanche backup Pavel) Francouz similarities, and what I mean by that is he’s a veteran, he knows the role, he’s going to push for starts,” MacFarland said. “He’s going to be supportive of the other guy. He can sit for five, six, seven, eight, nine or 10 days and be sharp as a tack.
Certainly seems like management brought in Blackwood to be the starter.
I'd laugh if it came out in a few years that the Avs acquired Wedgewood thinking it was Blackwood. Then went out and got the goalie they actually wanted.

I like thise numbers. I actually do think they could platoon for the short term (most of December?)- but over the longer term this team has playoff aspirations and I believe that not only does the team believe Blackwood will give them a better chance to win- but that those suppositions are correct and that he will indeed give them the best chance to win. Thats not to take away from Wedgewood or his early sicxess- the reality is that he has profiled as a guy better suited to backup duty for a long time now. Hoping he was a savior was a candle in the wind and the team knew that from day one imo...

I think Blackwood gets shelled in Colorado just like all their other goalies.
What's more likely, every goalie that plays for Colorado is terrible or their defensive structure needs improvement?
I think Blackwood can be a decent goalie though. He has good stretches. Very inconsistent in his career, either good, or terrible. Maybe he will enter a good phase and work out
for Colorado for a stretch. Colorado will likely be a tandem going forward with the more consistent of the two 'Woods' slowly gaining more starts.
It would not surprise me to see Georgiev play well in SJ either.
Part of me would love to see Georgiev play great in SJ and have Blackwood fail miserably in Colorado.... Would make for a fun story![]()

There’s a reason Blackwood went from “goalie of the future” in NJ to traded for a 6th round pick. It’s not like NJ wasn’t desperate for decent goaltending.
