I don't think many people really thought Geo was a top goalie in the league, but his fall over the last yr is pretty insane.

#SJSharks trade Mackenzie Blackwood, Givani Smith, and a 2027 5th round pick to #Avs for Alex Georgiev (14% retained), Nikolai Kovalenko, a 2026 2nd round pick and conditional 2025 5th round pick.

The 5th rd pick from COL turns into a 2025 4th rd pick (the worse of their current two 4ths in 2025) if TWO of these happen: COL makes 3rd round of the playoffs this year, Blackwood wins 25 reg season games this season for COL, or Blackwood starts 30 reg season games in 2024-25

oh shit. i don't know if im prepared for this curveball in fantasy.
so who is the starter in Colorado? Blackwood or Wedgewood
The Av's starter now is clearly *****wood (:

I think Wedgewood, but likely a timeshare if I had to guess
Wow, George’s fall from grace is complete.
What this shows, more than anything, is how few goalies are going to be UFAs this summer. If there were any worth anything, the Avs likely would've pounced to grab them as a rental. But the best of the best is Fleury, who has a NMC and is in the same division, and after that it really was Blackwood given that Samsonov, Vejmelka, or Jake Allen weren't being dealt. Geez though, I struggle to think of a more talented team in recent memory with such inferior goalies.

I'm taking a swing at Blackwood in one of my leagues. In my other leagues I have Sorokin/Gustavsson/Skinner and Kochetkov/Sorokin/Stolarz. Would be hard to crack that rotation. But Blackwood will be replacing Spencer Knight in my deepest league (also have Markstrom/Allen).
Could be a game changer pickup across fantasy hockey. Blackwood has some pedigree and enough time away from the limelight to get healthy and rebuild his game. Maybe he hits. I trust him a touch more than Wedgewood (who has been good for Colorado thus far) because Wedgewood doesn't have the track record or pedigree. I think Wedgewood has like one season under his belt with above 50% quality starts, whereas Blackwood has a few. Worthy of a swing, especially if you are a Georgiev owner because he just got imploded.

yeah the problem is the guy in first grabbed blackwood before i even heard of the trade. I got georgiev.
at this point im better off waiting to see how georgiev does in SJ than to swing at wedgewood im thinking. in a league with limited moves.
so frustrating this news though as a georgiev owner who was already super frustrating
I was a bit surprised to see Kovalenko in this deal, Smiths' pretty much a throw in but I don't think of Kovalenko that way, but I guess the Av's are trying to stop the bleeding and doing what they need to do now rather than worrying about tomorrow. I agree with Axe, I think this move could significantly benefit Kovalenko.
