    Default Next few NHL drafts

Long time reader, but very infrequent poster here........

Those playing in deep Dynasty league with draft picks multiple years out, what year seems like the best to start acquiring picks for.... 2025, 2026, or even 2027?

I know no-one has a crystal ball, but what year might people be targeting at this moment in time?

    thx

Someone already asked this but i cant find it...

This coming draft Hagnes, Martone and Misa appear to be at the top. I actually really like Misa and i seen him play live few times. He is now improving more and more, he had tough year last year by his standards but he is very good.

2026 - Another generetional player? well some appear to think so and he is a cousin of Connor Bedard his name is Gavin McKenna and i dont know anything about anybody else

2027 - Only name that stands out for now is London DuPont but things can change

Yeah I think 2027 is too far to think about bc those draft class are still kids.

Not a huge prospect person but from what I’ve heard the 2026 will be better than 2025 but as 2025 is closer you will be getting a lot more info right now so they could be more appealing. Also they are one year ahead which is always better.

The main thing I've heard about 2025 is that there's a top 4 or 5 that is an average or better top 5 for a draft, but that after that top 4 or 5, the draft is below average for any other draft. My take on it is that if you don't get a top 3 pick in 2025, it isn't especially worth it to gather 2025 picks. But that could change. Clear, indisputable #1 in Hagens, and perhaps Martone or Misa as good #2 and #3. Past that, it is yet to be written. As mentioned above, Gavin McKenna seems to be a clear 1.1 for his year.

If you can start acquiring lottery tickets for Gavin McKenna in 2026 that's what I'd be trying to do on in terms of the big prize, although obviously you want to try to get some high picks in each draft. Some good talents at the top this year, 2026 and even 2027 but that's a ways away.

Bob McKenzie has Matthew Schaefer at top now, but maybe what's more interesting is their projection of Hagens as more of a second line center than a first line. Still ranked as high as nr.2, which may indicate also the top being a bit weaker than most years. It's my take from it anyway. They do compare him to Hischier though.

A good example of how things change in just a couple of months. Schaefer looks the strongest now. That being said, your pNHLe algorithms still have Hagens in the J. Hughes, Bedard, Michkov elite tier of scoring draft prospects, so I can still see Hagens being #1 for fantasy. If NHL GMs are feeling that Hagens can't play a #1 center role, then he'll get dinged.

    Yup, I agree.

If you are swinging for the fence for the next Celebirni/Bedard level upside... then stockpile as many 2026 lottery picks.

Go for McKenna... he looks legit!

I think in leagues where you can stockpile different years, the best thing to do is view and pick after a first rounder just as ammo to acquire players when you need, and the first rounders you want to have a chance at a lotto. So if you're in negotiations with a better but older team, you would take their first in 2027, while a middle of the pack team on their way up you would want the 2025 pick instead.

2025 definitely seems to be a weaker crop outside the top 10 (or maaaybe 15) names, so any later picks you have this year, see if you can move a 2025 3rd for a late 2026 2nd, that kind of thing. You know your league best for how well you can bring picks in or out though, so try not to be too cute about it. A first in a weaker crop is still better than a 2nd in a stronger one. I feel like we all need those kind of reminders sometimes.

This year better than next year which is better than the year after that which is better than the following year.

The extra year of development means that you should almost always value this year's picks more than next year's. The only exception would be if you know for sure that the pick is going to be a top 3 pick but even then I would recommend going for earlier picks instead of later ones.

If you are stockpiling a bunch of first round picks, get them in the same year to greatly improve your chances of getting a top 3 pick as those are significantly more valuable than picks later in the round.

I think most drafts, especially looking forward, you'll find the first few picks excellent, the next group good, then it drops off from there. Eventually, players will rise up that we didn't expect or foresee but good luck predicting those. If your league has a lottery then it's worth your gamble to collect 1st round picks no matter the year because there will always be cream at the top and if you can land one of them then giddy up. If we're talking about a pick that's 15-20 and down, then you're basically buying draft day hype and promise with the hope they actually contribute to your fantasy team some day.
