Expert League just drafted! Here are some results.

One point to make on this is LW,RW gets marked as LW so that's a reason why RW looks light on a lot of teams.

Yahoo stat projections for each team. We all know how accurate those are...

Funny how zero-G strategy still may mean you end up with seven goalies.

    Yellow Dogs

So, it’s been a week since this draft. I had five drafts this past weekend and Friday’s lack of sleep is still playing havoc with my brain. I know there were moments that I wanted to remember to mention but I am not sure if they will come to me. I wound up drafting on my phone while at breakfast, driving for coffee and packing up a cabin in a campground. I don’t mind the Yahoo phone app so that’s helpful.

This is my 8th year in this league and, for the first six, I drafted top three every year. Karma has caught up and this is my second year in a row drafting 12th. The plan remains similar, however. I like some big point getters, early D and goalie games played cobbled together from late tandems and backups, hopefully from decent situations. The D have started earlier and earlier as the years have passed as others have also moved them up. I found this year they went faster than ever. All of the good players seemed to go fast to me. I don’t have a lot of faith in this team but after a quick glance at the other teams, I thought we all had some weaknesses. I may be wrong about that; it was a very quick glance.

    1. (12) Kirill Kaprizov (MIN - LW) I had him last year as well. Shots and points. He does what I want this slot to do.

    2. (13) Evan Bouchard (EDM - D) I had a forlorn hope for Makar but I had decided to take Bouchard or Josi here. I knew I would be after Josi in other leagues so I settled upon Bouchard as I figured the D I wanted would be long gone by pick 36. His relative youth leaves me hoping for some further growth and a boatload of points and +/-.

    3. (36) Aleksander Barkov (FLA - C) Barkov seems to be here the last couple of years. In fact I had all three of these players in my top four picks last year. I don’t mind injury prone players. Barkov looks to get me 90 points and good +/-.

    4. (37) Dougie Hamilton (NJ - D)
Hamilton is my poster boy. Shots and ratios but does he get time and deployment? Hughes is hurt and the coach who played him over Hamilton last year is gone. NJ looks like they could score some goals and I wanted Hamilton’s part in that enough to move him up here.

    5. (60) Travis Konecny (PHI - LW,RW)
Here is where things went off the rails for me. I had already taken Konecny in my KKUPFL slow draft, which was still running at this time, and I just didn’t see anyone else.

    6. (61) Mikhail Sergachev (UTA - D)
I want PPP from my D. At this point I was thinking that there are fewer certain PP QB’s than normal and perhaps fewer good players than in previous years. I wanted Sergachev somewhere, but not everywhere though, and here was the spot. He gets a few hits as well.

    7. (84) Zach Werenski (CBJ - D)
Now we start murdering our +/- as I do. PPP, shots and points. I wasn’t really happy about this here but again every time I looked at the player list it seemed like there were no players that I thought should still be there. I’m blaming eight years of promotion and relegation.

    8. (85) Nick Suzuki (MTL - C)
He’s the main guy on his team. He has a set line that seems to have found some chemistry. Hoping for the points I used to get from early F while I drafted D here.

    9. (108) Kris Letang (PIT - D)
There was a vague mention of Karlsson being injured and Letang hits and shoots or at least he used to. Drafting an old favourite here.

    10. (109) Seth Jones (CHI - D)
PP1 for all the good it does him. Breaks even on hits and shots. My last D.

    11. (132) Patrick Kane (DET - RW)
Until I took him in the KKUPFL, I had forgotten all about Kane. I had already done the math there and thought he might get more points that you might think. Hopefully, he finds his shooting ways as well.

    12. (133) Mark Scheifele (WPG - C)
Historically, close to PPG. Again, the main guy. I like 20 minute F.

    13. (156) Sam Bennett (FLA - C)
Worried about hits, shots and +/- and less about points at this point. Hopefully, Bennett hits that 3 shots and 2+ hits per game that he has managed a couple of years ago.

    14. (157) Patrik Laine (MTL - LW)
I wanted Laine somewhere and took that potential bounce back here. Looks like he has a knee injury now though.

    15. (180) Justus Annunen (COL - G)
I thought I would jump a couple of G here as the F were all starting to look the same. I hope Annunen poaches games from Georgiev and maintains the standard he set in a small sample last year.

    16. (181) Semyon Varlamov (NYI - G)
Sorokin has not been seen yet, as far as I can tell. Roy seems to like Varlamov and he did well last year. Hoping for more than just a backup’s number of starts.

    17. (204) Viktor Arvidsson (EDM - LW)
Another long time favourite of mine. Shots/60, check. Deployment and health? Probably not a lot of PP time but he often has done well without much. Likely line mate of Draisaitl though and hopefully he turns that into shots, points and +/-.

    18. (205) David Rittich (LA - G)
LA has been a good G environment. Rittich has been good there. Kuemper has been iffy. Perhaps some more starts for Rittich in that good environment.

    19. (228) Jake Allen (NJ - G)
The common theme with the rest of my G is that they are playing for teams I expect to win more than lose. We count only wins, GAA and saves and good teams should take care of two of those.

    20. (229) Calvin Pickard (EDM - G)
    See Allen

    21. (252) Ryan Hartman (MIN - C,RW)
Short of RW, I go with Hartman has started camp centring Minnesota’s top line.

    22. (253) Jonathan Quick (NYR - G)
    See Allen

    23. (276) Reilly Smith (NYR - RW)
Top six for NYR. Decent micro stats.

    24. (277) Scott Wedgewood (NSH - G)
    See Allen

    25. (300) Cole Perfetti (WPG - C,LW)
    I don’t know. I needed a LW.

I have done no math but I worry about my shots, hits and +/-.

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley [2024-25]

    Last Resort

C - Crosby, Zibanejad, Kadri, Norris
LW - Draisaitl, Buchnevich, Nichushkin, Perron
RW - Kempe, Rust, Vilardi, Lehkonen
D - Karlsson, Doughty, Harley, Nurse, Walman, Emberson
G - Hellebuyck, Oettinger, Wolf, DeSmith, Levi, Brossoit
    BN - Couture

    1. (6) Leon Draisaitl (EDM - C,LW)
I expected to get one of Draisaitl, Kucherov or Pastrnak and got Draisaitl and I was happy as Draisaitl was the highest ranked on my list, not much of a difference between them though.

    2. (19) Connor Hellebuyck (WPG - G)
Pre-draft I was hoping for Bouchard, Josi or maybe J.Hughes if I am very lucky, but all of them went. I didn't like any of the available skaters that much and my top-ranked goalie Hellebuyck was still there so happy to pick him up. Goalie categories are 3/9 in this league and weekly waivers can make catching up in goalie games hard. Also two goalie cats, W and SVS, are two of the easier to predict goalie categories(compared to mess that is GAA and SV%) so I am willing to take goalies little higher in this setting.

    3. (30) Sidney Crosby (PIT - C)
I did think about taking a second goalie here, but Oettinger, Skinner, Vasilevski and Markstrom were all still there so I thought I could wait until my next pick and still get one of them. Skaterwise I was choosing between Forsberg, Crosby and Guentzel and ended up gong with Crosby as I thought Guentzel might drop to my next pick and I am bit hesitant on Forsberg due to injury issues so went with the safer bet on Crosby.

    4. (43) Jake Oettinger (DAL - G)
I would have taken Guentzel if he was here, but he was sniped few picks before my pick. Once again I didn't like the available skaters much so went for a goalie. Oettinger, Skinner and Markstrom were all there and decided to get Oettinger. I had two goalies already so I was done picking goalies for some time. Goalies went somewhat later than I was expecting and there was goalies available later what I considered good spots so might have been mistake to go for 2G so early, but at least I have fairly safe goalie duo with two Top5 goalies in my rankings on my team.

    5. (54) Adrian Kempe (LA - C,RW)
I did consider going Weegar, Sergachev or Seider, but had E.Karlsson ranked similarly who I was pretty confident would be available later so didn't take D for now. I kind of needed to get the wingers started so went with highest ranked winger available in Kempe.

    6. (67) Erik Karlsson (PIT - D)
My two highest ranked skaters available were E.Karlsson and Zibanejad and thought Zibanejad was more likely to last to my next pick. Both would probably have been available anyway. I had E.Karlsson on many leagues last season and he was definitely a big disappointment, but I am willing to buy again as I am expecting him to produce around 70 pts pace. PIT PP shouldn't be as bad again as it was last season. E.Karlsson is a very low hit D though so I'll have to try compensate for that later.

    7. (78) Mika Zibanejad (NYR - C)
Zibanejad is there so pick him up, would probably have taken Fiala, Verhaeghe or Caufield if he was gone.

    8. (91) Drew Doughty (LA - D)
I needed some hits to compensate for Karlsson deficiency and Doughty should bring some help there on top of solid scoring numbers. Of course he was injured after the draft so not much you can do about that, but I think a solid pick at the time of the draft.

    9. (102) Pavel Buchnevich (STL - C,LW)
I take a look at the goalies and Ullmark, Kuemper and Woll who I expected to go within Top100 picks were still there so I might have been better of taking a skater instead of Oettinger and get a 2nd G here. I did consider picking up 3rd goalie, but decided that would be too much of a hit for my skaters so went with best skater available on my list in Buchnevich. In hindsight Buchnevich would probably have been available at least 2 rounds later and maybe even 4 rounds later so picking him here was unnecessary and I would have been better of going with Slafkovsky or Dunn.

    10. (115) Bryan Rust (PIT - RW)
Another pick where I take player significantly earlier than I needed to in Rust as he was usually available picks 150-180 in other drafts I did so I should probably have taken someone like Slafkovsky, McCann or Faber here.

    11. (126) Nazem Kadri (CGY - C)
I was choosing between Kadri, Ehlers, Guenther and Harley and ended up going with Kadri.

    12. (139) Thomas Harley (DAL - D)
Only Harley of the previous round's targets was there so picked him up. I did think about going 3rd goalie with someone like Kochetkov or Ingram, but decided to pass on goalis for now.

    13. (150) Darnell Nurse (EDM - D)
I had Norris, Benn, Nurse and Pionk in my consideration, but thought Norris would probably be available at least 2 rounds later and maybe even closer to pick 200 so skipped him for now. Nurse vs Pionk was close, but decided to go for Nurse as league has +/- as a category and EDM should be better bet than WPG for that. Nurse is also a solid hitter and needed those hits to compensate for E.Karlsson.

    14. (163) Gabriel Vilardi (WPG - C,RW)
Pre-draft I had slotted in Nichushkin around round 15 or so did consider him here already, but decided to wait few more rounds. Norris I could probably wait as well so picked up the next best forward on my list in Vilardi. Daccord was still there and I probably should have picked up good 3rd goalie while I still could in hindsight.

    15. (174) Josh Norris (OTT - C)
Took a look at my next ranked D in Walman, Lauzon and McCabe and was pretty sure at least one of them would be available R18 or later so decided to wait on them. Decided to go for Norris and Nichushkin and picked Norris first. Annunen who I think could take over COL starting role was still here and in hindsight I think I should have picked up him here.

    16. (187) Valeri Nichushkin (COL - LW)
Nichushkin was still there so went with him. Based on what I have read, it seems like he will be welcome back to COL once his suspension is over so I am projecting about 55GP with ~70s PTS pace and that would place him around rank 130 overall in my list so I thought he was worth the risk 50 picks later than his rank.

    17. (198) Dustin Wolf (CGY - G)
Quality backup goalies have started going and bit disappointed that I missed on the higher quality guys like Stolarz, Annunen. Wolf is a decent 3rd goalie and should be the starter in CGY.

    18. (211) Jake Walman (SJ - D)
I was also thinking about Mark Stone, but needed hits so decided to skip on him. I went with highest ranked D in my board in Walman. SJS doesn't exactly have much options for PP1 QB so I think it's Walman's spot to lose. Playing a lot on bad team like SJS might lead to really bad +/- though and I also needed hits which Walman doesn't provide much so might not have been the smartest choice when looking at my team category needs.

    19. (222) Casey DeSmith (DAL - G)
Not much available I like that much in skaters so decided to secure the DAL goalie handcuff in DeSmith.

    20. (235) Artturi Lehkonen (COL - RW)
    21. (246) Devon Levi (BUF - G)
    22. (259) Ty Emberson (EDM - D)
    23. (270) David Perron (OTT - LW,RW)
    24. (283) Logan Couture (SJ - C)
    25. (294) Laurent Brossoit (CHI - G)

Just filling out the roster with depth skaters and throwing some darts on potential goalies. Lehkonen should have solid role in COL until at least one of Nichushkin/Landeskog comes back. I am still not completely sold on UPL so thought Levi is worth a shot this late in the draft. Emberson might play quite good amount in EDM and I am hoping for solid hits and +/-. Perron is just a filler wing with solid overall numbers including hits. If Couture can replicate 22-23 season stats he would be Top150 player so I thought he was worth stashing on IR for now, not looking that good though now since he hasn't even skated on the training camp after missing most of the last season. So looking more similar to what happened with Backstrom, but we'll see how it goes. Brossoit posted excellent numbers in WPG so I think he was worth a shot and CHI might not be quite that bad this season, at least Bedard has some passable wingers now.

Overall team is fine, but I think I should have picked up some higher quality 3rd G like Stolarz/Annunen to support my high G investment, but goalies should be still fine. I took some players earlier than necessary, but that happens when you don't have a solid information about where players are picked. Doughty was injured of course which isn't great, but not much you can do about that. Category-wise looks like I didn't get enough hits so picking up high hits W/D from FA could be a good idea. +/- might also be a bit of a worry as I have lot of players from mediocre teams and Walman could be a pretty heavily in negative unless SJS is better than expected.

    Dobber Sports Blue-Chipper

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley [2024-25]

Yotes Pack - may need a new name this year

C - Larkin, Hertl, Malkin, Kopitar
LW - B. Tkachuk, Forsberg, Tippett, Kuzmenko
RW - Necas, Raymond, Boeser, Schmaltz
D - Dahlin, Seider, Forsling, Byram, H. Lindholm, Xhekaj
G - Vas, UPL, Talbot, Wallstedt
    BN - Bjorkstrand, N. Paul
    IR - Mintyukov

    1. (8) Brady Tkachuk (OTT - C,LW)
I thought I'd end up with Rantanen/Makar here, but Rantanen went at 1.7. Considered Makar, but went with Brady's elite SOG/Hits combo.

    2. (17) Rasmus Dahlin (BUF - D)
Knew dmen were going to be bumped up across everyone's board with 72 rostered, and figured an elite D was the pick here. Great across the board stats for Dahlin, and the offensive upside to be the top ranked d when all is said and done.

    3. (32) Filip Forsberg (NSH - LW)
Had Heiskanen and Crosby queued up here, but both went in the 3 picks before me. Had no plans to draft Forsberg this year, but even with some regression there's probably enough value here. With the multi-cat contributions from Brady, Dahlin, and Forsberg so far, I can afford some softer mainly points guys later.

    4. (41) Andrei Vasilevskiy (TB - G)
Was planning to fade goalies a bit more than this and go with Stutzle, Guentzel or Hamilton here. All went just before me, and I didn't see another skater I liked. Debated Otter and Vas, and went with Vas due to the longer track record of high-end performance.

    5. (56) Mortiz Seider (DET - D)
I like Detroit to take a step this year, and I'm hopeful Seider gets a larger share of the pptime. If so, this is a great pick. If not, the floor ain't bad. Another mental note - back off hits a bit.

    6. (65) Dylan Larkin (DET - C)
First C, and solid across the board contributions. As above, I'm bullish on DET. Considered Zibs, but Larkin's the man in Detroit while Zibs is effectively playing L2.

    7. (80) Lucas Raymond (DET - LW,RW)
Hope I'm right about Detroit.... In hindsight I wish I'd grabbed Caufield, who's SOG likely vault him above Raymond. Caufield went a couple picks later.

    8. (89) Owen Tippett (PHI - LW,RW)
Tons of potential here with elite SOG/Hits. Thrilled about the pick.

    9. (104) Martin Necas (CAR - C,RW)
Definitely need D at this point, but I don't really like any options. I like Necas to bounce back to 70 points with much more pp time this year.

    10. (113) Gustav Forsling (FLA - D)
A bit of a reach here, but now I'm desperate for D. Will play a lot of minutes on a good team, and the pp qb spot is open. If he gets even half of the pp time, this will work out well.

    11. (128) Brock Boeser (VCR - RW)
Wanted another D and was eyeing Faber (he went prior), but again didn't like any of the available options. Really happy with my wings at this point. Time to focus on everything else.

    12. (137) UPL (BUF - G)
Bit of a gamble as my 2nd G. Hopefully UPL plays like he did last year, and Buffalo improves a bit.

    13. (152) Tomas Hertl (VGK - C)
    14. (161) Evgeni Malkin (PIT - C)
    15. (176) Anze Kopitar (LA - C)

A trio of older centers to fill out C. Points and ppp.

    16. (185) Nick Scmaltz (UTA - C,RW)
Good ppp and points, and I can afford his light hits. Probably a reach. In hindsight wish I'd taken Nichushkin.

    17. (200) Bowen Byram (BUF - D)
    18. (209) Hampus Lindholm (BOS - D)

4th and 5th D. This'll be the weak point on my team. Dobber's quite high on Byram, but he's gotta stay healthy.

    19. (224) Cam Talbot (DET - G)
Happy to nab Detroit's likely starter here. I'm all in on Detroit at this point.

    20. (233) Andrei Kuzmenko (CAL - LW,RW)
    21. (248) Oliver Bjorkstrand (SEA - RW)

    Some wing depth with upside.

    22. (257) Pavel Mintyukov (ANA - D)
Potential PP QB, and underrated hits

    23. (272) Nicholas Paul (TB - C,LW)
PP points at the end of the draft

    24. (281) Arber Xhekaj (MTL - D)
    Depth D

    25. (296) Jesper Wallstedt (MIN - G)
Heard rumours that Minny wants to get Wallstedt a bunch more games this year. Could really pay off.

    Draft grade: B

I tend to overdraft hits, and the top of the draft was certainly tending that way. Happy to have pivoted and like where I'm at for points/ppp pace. If Detroit takes a step as hoped, this team could do well.
    Yahoo 12-team H2H partial keeper league (keep 7 vets + 3 prospects (p = skater <201 gp; goalie < 101gp))

    G,A,P,PIM,+/-,PPP,SOG,FW,hits,blocks; W,GAA,SV%,Saves
Start 3/3/3/5/2; large bench, 1 NA spot

    C: Eriksson-Ek, Horvat, Celebrini
    LW: B. Tkachuk (c), JRob, Stutzle (c), N. Paul (c)

First time in the Expert tier, so knew it would be challenging!

    Holypuck

    1.(1) Connor McDavid (EDM - C)
Pretty easy, and am an Oilers fan, think I have maybe only got him once in any other years/leagues, so am happy

    2.(24)Jason Robertson (DAL - LW)
Was my target at the turn, hoping he can get back to 90-100 pts
    HM: Hyman,Forsberg

    3.(25)Adam Fox (NYR - D)
Needed a D, hindsight probably would have went Hedman, Fox +/- and high PPP was kind of influencing me...

    4.(48)Andrei Svechnikov (CAR - LW,RW)
Was feeling light on hits, so went with the injury risk Svech, is this finally the year he stays healthy?

    5.(49)Stuart Skinner (EDM - G)
Might be early, maybe my Oil bias, but with priority on W/SVs, Stu could have a chance be a leader in W's, and didn't think he would make it the long wait back to me next pick

    6.(72)Wyatt Johnston (DAL - C,RW)
Was Happy with WJ here, hope the breakout continues

    7.(73)Steven Stamkos (NSH - C,LW)
He was falling far from ADP, and couldn't let him pass. Could struggle in Nash though...

    8.(96)John Carlson (WSH - D)
Needed a D, think this is good value for Carlson, aren't many D PP1 locks left

    9.(97)Alex DeBrincat (DET - LW,RW)
Hoping he can get back to 35+ goals, also covers most cats decently

    10.(120)Brady Skjei (NSH - D)
Was panicking a bit for D, didn't love any guys left, likely not much PP time without a Josi injury, but might still have some offense riding next to Josi. Would have taken Hanifin if given a mulligan, now realizing he looks to be PP1 in LV

    11.(121)Alexis Lafreniere (NYR - LW,RW)
Hoping he takes another step, without PP1 might be limiting, if he can get PP1, could be nice value

    12.(144)Filip Hronek (VAN - D)
Feeling the D stress again, similar situation to Skjei, riding shotgun to Hughes. Would be happy with a repeat of his last season stats. I made a mistake by not taking Fred Andersen here, I thought he was taken already, I saw Pyotr drafted a couple picks before, and didn't see Freddy still available for some reason. Road Apples was able to complete his stack

    13.(145)Elias Lindholm (BOS - C)
Banking on a rebound with Pasta

    14.(168)Joey Daccord (SEA - G)
Hoping for a repeat of last year, probably won't happen though, but weren't many potential starters left on decent teams

    15.(169)Anthony Stolarz (TOR - G)
Same as above, hoping for a decent timeshare or Woll injury

    16.(192)K'Andre Miller (NYR - D)
Slim pickings for D, wanted some hits with some offensive upside

    17.(193)JJoonas Korpisalo (BOS - G)
With all the Swayman uncertainty, hoping he can get a few extra games.

    18.(216)Trevor Moore (LA - LW,RW)
Seems to cover most cats well except PP

    19.(217)Joel Hofer (STL - G)
Since I only have 1 workhorse goalie, went with another backup, maybe Blues give him more games this year. Maybe should have went with Pickard to cuff with Skinner...

    20.(240)Adam Fantilli (CBJ - C)
A bit of a lottery ticket, no idea what to expect from CBJ, maybe he gets decent minutes and PP1, hoping he doesn't totally screw +/-

    21.(241)Tanner Jeannot (LA - LW,RW)
Was feeling light on hits, hoping he gets back to his preds form, 30+pts / 300 hits

    22.(264)Dylan DeMelo (WPG - D)
Clarke got sniped 2 picks before, really scrounging for a last D, his +46 from last year swayed me

    23.(265)Mason Marchment (DAL - LW)
Nothing was jumping out at me, he does a bit of everything on a strong stars team. Jack Quinn could have been a better pick if he gets PP1 in Buffalo, I could use more PPP

    24.(288)John Gibson (ANA - G)
Should have taken Dostal, even before the injury news, at least i can IR him for now and see what happens.

    25.(289)Tyler Seguin (DAL - C,RW)
Not a guy with much upside anymore but a safe floor, have alot of Dallas players now....

The projection had me 2nd which i don't put much faith in, but am hoping to be in the mix through the season, my goalies could be an issue, but I wasn't willing to invest high picks for them, so that's the gamble. My D are a bit weak after Fox/Carlson, made a couple questionable picks there in hindsight. Will probably need massive PP points from Mcjesus to compensate for some of my other PP2 guys. I didn't get some of the mid/late round "sleeper"guys like Peterka/Guenther/Faulk/Michkov/Clarke.

    Was a tough draft!

I could have sworn you were in before. There’s one other current manager who was in and then down for a few years until he came up again last year. I’m not 100% sure who; I think Locke?

I found this my toughest draft in ages. I started taking guys I wasn’t planning to take in the fifth round. And when I look back at it, it still seemed rough. I feel like all of this winning promotion and avoiding relegation has as left us with a tough group this year.

I was on autodraft (with no edited predraft rankings) last year so that probably helped leave the better players.

    2020-21 Holypuck won Entry Norris
2021-22 Holypuck last in Pro Wales (relegated)
    2022-23 Holypuck won Entry Adams
    2023-24 Holypuck won Pro Campbell

There is just no inbetween lol

Yes, you are right, I looked back and think I was in the Expert league 18/19, and then went down to the lower tiers. See if I can fare better this time around!

Yeah, I was in the Expert for a year in 2017 I think. Relegated immediately after drafting poorly performing goalies too high.
4 years in Pro after that and won in 2021, and back in Expert since. And this is always a real tough draft.
