    Default Inspirational personal stories?

I am going through a tough time. Does anyone have any personal stories where they maybe lost their job, got divorced or had a major setback and came back from it?

I broke my ankle in 2019, got prescribed pain meds, got hooked and kinda fell off the map a bit. Got set back financially. With help from my family I got off them before something really bad could happen.

I come from a pretty good life, never had any hardships or broken family stuff you normally hear with addiction so it kinda caught me off guard initially. But family noticed stuff being off and kinda called me out before I was looking for stuff off the street to satisfy my addiction.

Life gets at you, it's how you react that makes you special. Humility and self pride are two sides of a coin that need to be looked at when in a tough spot in life. No one is too big to ask for help, and no one is too small to think they don't deserve help.

Thank you for this! That's awesome. Addiction is a monster and unless you have experienced it or seen it very closely no one can truly understand.

Similar to 2014O, i was hit by a car crossing a road. Crushed my leg, multiple operations, bed ridden for 10 weeks. totally addicted to Oxy, live in girlfriend took care of me by bathing in bed, setting me up with breakfast and lunch while she went to work then took me to the gym which had a pool after she got home so i can train how to walk again.
This woman stood by me every day changing my bandages and sacrificing her life to better mine. From that point on, I lost over 90 lbs and became pretty fit. I know work out 5 times a week, run 5ks every 3 days, perform olympic lifting and love life.

I hope the very best for you Canucks fan! If you need an ear, im here for ya.

    Stay positive.

Thanks man that's great to hear! That's inspirational, you said you lost 90 lbs, so before this accident you weren't as fit I am guessing? I use to be fit, then let myself go with more of the partying lifestyle, I am not huge by any means but I am a far cry from where I once was. Want to kick the bad habits to the curb after this last event and concentrate on bettering myself.

I had never been laid off in my life, but stayed at a job too long out of loyalty, and then we were acquired and it was decided not to retain my entire department. I figured this would be a good thing, as now I could finally find an even better job. My last day at work was the first week of March 2020. So yeah, to say no one was hiring would be a vast understatement. But I still kept at it, ultimately making it to the final two for two different positions, losing out on both, which both were such gut punches. I told my wife if I was out of work for three years I'd just call it a day and take a job outside my field or volunteer. But I landed a job five months before my self-imposed deadline, and am still here as of now, although it's pretty fair to say my company is facing tough times as well, but working for two more years has been huge in terms of my mental health and pride, plus putting aside money so my wife and I could build our forever home.

Then there's my mom. She was born in Hungary in 1936, and you might be able to guess where this is heading. Being Jewish, her father was rounded up when she was seven years old and she never saw him again. She fled and managed to evade capture, enduring unspeakable hardships at such a young age. Then when all was seemingly safe to return, she did, only for the Hungarian revolution to occur a not even a decade later. By then her older brother had come to the US to study, so he was able to get a family to sponsor my mom and her mom to come here. Life was good until in her mid 60s she found out she had uterine cancer, which was very advanced but also highly localized. She endured aggressive treatment, and I still remember it because she's wearing a wig in my wedding photos. She survived, but since then, due to the radiation she received, has had to deal with recurring stomach blockages that come from nowhere and are horrible, plus multiple infections every year. But she will never complain and is just so happy to have raised a family, and to have grandkids that she was able to see grow up, and to have been married for 55 years.

Wow two incredible stories. Both from your side and your mom's. I can only manage that you had many sleepless nights worrying about your next career opportunity until it finally emerged. To happen right at the deadline is something else. The problem is we get so specialized in our positions that it makes it hard to find work outside your field. I am constantly trying to upgrade skills to avoid this. Then your mom's story puts everything in perspective and just how lucky we are to live in North America in relative safety and high living standards. She seems like an incredible lady.

Stay positive Canucksfan, I’m in a similar spot right in the middle of an addiction that has taken nearly everything. I just make my rent every month and for some reason my company has stood by me. I’m trying to work my way out of it but it’s hard when you keep slipping. I don’t know the nature of your struggle but the only thing to do is keep pressing forward even if you fail and then fail again and then again. Perseverance my friend. And as others here have said if you need to talk send me a message.
