advice/advise it is what it is lol
Hey all,
Me and my buddies have been 20 years into our pts only league.
We want to try a h2h cats league and are looking for some input.
What is the most recommended categories for trying this out? How big rosters would you recommend?
It will be 6-8 teams.
Cats we are thinking off are:
goals
assist
points
ppp
shp
gwg
+/-
PIM
hits
blocks
wins
shutouts
GAA
SV%
is this fairly decent, or would you drop/add certain categories?
Its mostly to try it out and see if we enjoy it.
we are arguing over roster sizes as well.
Any tips for trying H2H leagues would be appreciated
Thanks,

I don't recommend SHP or +/- as individual categories, they fluctuate wildly and really skew the value of players. Not too long ago, Patrice Bergeron was a near 1.1 in drafts because he got so many shorthanded points, he could win a category all by himself. I've never played GWG, but I'd guess that category is along the same line. Or at least it just represents boosting an already-existing goals category.
I like:
Goals
Assists
Hits
Blocks
SOG
Special Teams Points (PP +SH)
W
GAA
SV%

I hate +\- with a passion. Just roll the dice like stratomatic and be done with it.
12 team Yahoo Roto keeper (keep 3)

My advice is to keep it simple. If people aren't used to (several) categories then having too many could make managing your teams and evaluating players more difficult, which could lead to losing interest.
Also, I agree with comments above about unpredictable categories - personally I don't like them much either. Especially those that aren't frequent on a weekly basis, as they have too much of an effect on the matchup e.g. SHP, GWG, SHO at least, and maybe +/- if you don't like the randomness.
Finally, don't make goalies have too much influence on the matchup since they will have very few roster slots compared to skaters. For me, no more than 1/3 of the categories for goalies e.g. 6 skater ones, 3 goalies ones is fine but maybe more skater ones if you and your buddies are happy with it. If I had to choose, I would rather includes Saves instead of GAA, as it would be too ratio heavy with both GAA/SV% and Wins. But the mix is up to you.

I also think SHP and GWG should be dropped. I used to be in a league with GWG and it was quite random week to week, although goals scorers tend to be favored a little. SHP could be included as special team points (PPP + SHP) as proposed by ginfizz. I am not a fan of +/- but have learned to deal with over the years. For goalies, since you only have 6-8 teams, I would focus on stats like GAA and SV%.
So G, A, Pts, PPP, SOG, Hits, Blocks; W, GAA, SV%
12 teams H2H Keeper
Keep 7 (1 each position, +2 any position but goalie)
G A P PPP SOG FW HITS BLK PIM W GAA SV% SHO
Start: 3C 3LW 3RW 4D 2U 2G 5B
C: Mackinnon Matthews Thomas Bennett Pinto
LW: Kaprizov Buchnevich (C) Fiala Drouin (C)
RW: JT Miller (C) Barzal (C) Jarvis (C) Geekie (C)
D: Fox Hamilton (IR) Nurse Faber Harley Manson Chabot
G: Hellebuyck Rittich Ingram Lyon Andersen (IR)
I run an 8 team H2H for my golf buddies. Hockey knowledge varies in our group. I have modified the league over the years. We switched to H2H 1 category win. That way all teams have a chance every week. Plus all 8 make the playoffs.
Our settings: 5 forwards, 3 Dmen, 1 goalie, 6 bench.
Goals, assists, power play points, shots on goal, face off wins, hits, game winning goals.
Wins, saves, goals against, shutouts.
Mostly all categories are volume based.
The league is all about fun and bragging rights. We have a miniature Stanley Cup which the Championship team gets to keep for the year.
Yahoo! 10 Team Keep 6, H2H - 1 win
G, A, SOG, PPP, FOW, H, B, Wins, GAA, Sv%, SHO
4 weekly goalie appearances minimum
2C, 2RW, 2LW, 1Ut, 4D, 3G, 6Bench, 2-I/R+, 1NA
Keepers: Draisaitl, Kaprizov, Stutzle, Makar, Bouchard, Dahlin
Roster: T.Thompson, Necas, Sergachev, Vasilevskiy

This is great advice.
I'd go with G, A, P, Shots, Hits/Blocks, PIM, Wins, GAA, and SV%
Personally, I don't care for random stats such as SHP, GWG, and SO. +/- is alright since it is somewhat predictable. Not really a fan of PPP since they are easier for players to obtain. Actually, I'd rather have even strenght points as a category than power play points. TOI is something I've thought would be interesting but have never had it in a league. Good luck.
10 Team, 60 Player Roster
G, A, PTS, PPP, PIM, BLKs, Hits, +/-, Shots, W, GAA, SV%, Saves
C- JHughes, Trocheck, RThomas, Zegras, Norris, Bennett, PLD, Stephenson, Danualt, Hayton
RW- Raymond, Stone, TWilson, Toffoli, KJohnson, Nyqvist, Zary
LW- Keller, Schmaltz, Bunting, Skinner, Barbashev, Duclair
D- QHughes, McAvoy, Doughty, Heiskanen, Hronek, LHughes, Mintyukov
G- Shesterkin, Demko, Andersen, Kahkonen, Levi, Tarasov, Annunen
Notable Prospects- Nikishin, Levshunov, Sennecke, Kulich, Leonard, Wood, Perreault, Lekkermaki, Ostlund, Othmman, REvans, L-Heureux, Ivanov, Murashov, Sandin-Pellika
Like the keep it simple to start.
I would look to add saves for goalies as this gives the goalies on weaker teams better value. GAA and SV% correlate to each other basically as the same thing. Goalies on top teams usually have good values on both categories while not facing as many shots.
