    Default Jonaton Lekkerimaki

I do an awful lot of talking around here- and Im more than happy to take a step back and listen on this topic...

This is a HARD player to get a read on. The usual sources can't agree of hes an overrated one trick pony destined for bustville or a budding star who should have been ranked 6 after the tier one of forwards and d (Slaf, Cooley, Wright, Nemec, Jiricek)- debatablely the best shot/goal scorer in the entire draft?? Thats a big range of outcomes lol!

If you put a lot of impetus on things like linemates and team situation- he stacks up near perfectly as a Swedish born sniper drafted by the Canucks who arguably have the nest Swedish born playmaker of this generation in EP. If he doesn't mesh with Patterson he'll have to "settle" for JT Miller. Thats a gig right there...

So I had him all lined up as a guy I was likely going to move now that hes refurbished his keeper value- BEFORE he faces more adversity- lol! Now I'm not so sure. I sort of think its worth seeing what he can do in the AHL (in NA really). I just feel like.most of his upside is "hypothetical" at this point... BUT if he can crack the A? Mommas lock up your daughters on the west coast cause Jonaton with no H will be looking like an honest to God superstar!

Not there yet- but I went from a SHOP to a HOLD after doing my deep dive.

What say you dobber nation? All opinions are safe- if you think hes a bust- lets hear about it! Cheers all- look forward to hearing what you have to say. If you have any unique insight or anecdotal stuff I LOVE that- lol- let us know!!
    Weekly hth league- 2c, 3w,1 ff (forward only flex), 4d, 1g, and one true flex. Sog/goal weighted for skaters: G4, A3, Sog1, PPP+1. +/- adds/minuses one for F/3 for D. Workhorse starters = GOLD!

We are a full dynasty keeper BUT we only protect 8 (9 if you miss playoffs)- which means that you can lose ONE player outside that range each year to the steal round.

He's a blue chip prospect who did everything right to raise his stocks last season. I expect him to be a full time NHLer next season

    The upcoming, or "next" season?

I expect one or two seasons in the AHL before consistent NHL time, if he makes it. I've higher hopes for Holtz than Lekkerimäki.

I agree CE. I don't know if I've ever had as highly-ranked of a prospect that I had less confidence in. I HATED drafting him 8th and a drafting tier ended at 7 during his entry draft so I was kinda stuck and I picked who I liked the most (Lekkerimaki). Looking back, I feel I made a good choice. Geekie, Kemel, and Howard went right after him so I feel I actually made the best choice of the next grouping. Yurov looks like it would have been the best choice but he was the 24th pick so that would of been a helluva pick if I made it. Anyways, after Lekkerimaki's awful D+1 season I was preparing myself that he'd be a bust and it would be a waste of a high pick. Everything since then has been bonus so I'm just optimistic that he can become a player. I guess if someone offered me a safer prospect or a future #1 pick, I'd probably make it but that doesn't really happen in our league. Let's just hope he keeps developing and gets put in a scoring role in Vancouver with Petersson or Miller.

He's the Canucks prized prospect right now so he will at leas get opportunity. Hard to know how these things shake out though. The only thing I worried about is how Tochett uses him, he demands a certain degree of defensive responsibility and if he doesn't provide that he could be riding the pine, see Kuzmenko.

Can you imagine what would have happened to say Pavel Bure if he came into the league under one of these “denfensive responsibilities” coaches…

Assuming he continues his trajectory, I think he plays a few games in the 2024 season, and goes pretty much full time NHL in 2025

Lekkerimaki like virtually all prospects will take time to develop into an NHL forward. Very few 18 year olds or 19 year olds for that matter immediately step into a full time NHL role. Lekkerimaki will be no exception IMO. What we don't know is how he will develop. All prospects have weaknesses that must be improved upon and as some have already indicated Lekkerimaki does have questions marks surrounding him. How it all turns out, no one knows, not even Lekkerimaki. I suspect he is not a bust, of course it depends on how you define bust. What will be determined over the next few years is where he actually fits into the Canucks line up. Right now I'm pretty sure he is not destined for the 4th line, but where in the top 9 he ends up is TBD. If I'm guessing, if all goes well, middle 6. I'm also thinking that his "emergence" is still 2 to 3 years away, but who the hell knows, maybe he proves me dead wrong and accelerates his development.

I suspect the 25/26 season will be when we see him, perhaps at the end of '25 if he does well in the minors. They dont need to bring him up now, they have enough depth, and a few guys in line ahead of him they would like to see succeed sooner rather than later - ie Hoglunder will get another go in the top 6. Then they'll probably try Podkolzin, and even Aatu Raty before Lekkermaki. I doubt he will get any instant success under Tocchet. Last year they gave Bains a cookie, and he didnt exactly feast on it - lasted about 3 games? And that guy had a tonne of hustle.

The reality in today's NHL is that unless you play "the system" you will not play. If you've read Bobby Orr's book you will clearly see what has happened with the game. Orr laments that the game has significantly changed from his day, and not for the better. Talent is being suppressed in a big way, its robotic, play a system, or don't play. He states that he was indeed lucky in that he was given the opportunity to play his game and not forced to play a system. And, as they say, the rest is history. Anyway, the bottom line here is if you are wondering why your sure-fire prospect is shitting the bed, well, your prospect is not playing and adapting well to the system. Ya, Bure would have been F'd! Personally, I feel the game has and the fans have been cheated by the "play the system at all costs mentality" My 2 cents.
