If he goes on unconditional waivers for mutual contract termination there's no penalty the way I've understood previous cases.
So I would guess the Canes and the Caps Kuz cap hits come off the books. But just a guess.
Lots of rumblings on Twitter that Kuzenetsov is signing a 4yr deal with SKA of the KHL. He's still under contract for one more year so he would need to be waived and potentially bought out? Not sure how this plays out.

Per http://championat.com Evgeni Kuznetsov is set to sign a 4-year contract with SKA as soon as he terminates his agreement with the Hurricanes #CauseChaos #Canes

Unsurprising, and, at this point in his career, largely unremarkable. Talk about a fall from grace - 78 points in 79 games in 2021-22, followed by two straight seasons in which his scoring rate dropped by 25 points - yikes!

Buyout window is closed so he literally can’t be bought out at the moment. They did have Drury and Necas elect for arbitration, but I can’t see Carolina buying him out. If he wants to go to the K he’ll have to agree to terminate his contract and walk away from the money. Interestingly, Carolina has (likely on July 1) already paid him his $2M signing bonus for this season. I can’t imagine Dundon would want to pay him an additional $4M this year to go home. It’s more likely Carolina tries to recoup that $2M paid.
I think they mutually agree to terminate the contract and he walks away from the last year. I don’t see how the Canes can go after him for the bonus. They traded for the contact with full knowledge. Trying to recoup that and the inevitable NHLPA battle would just be throwing good money after bad. And it’s chump change. So long Kuznetsov.

I actually thought he looked revitalized in Carolina and they did need an offensive second line centre. This is too bad.
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
Some reporter said he isn't on the same page with terminating his deal this yr, however the KHL team does want him this yr, but more realistic that he goes after his NHL deal expires.

Hearing Evgeny Kuznetsov will be placed on unconditional waivers today for purposes of a mutual contract termination.
Both #Canes and #Caps are now free of Kuznetsov's cap hit and contract. He is walking away from final $6 million owed in salary this season to return to Russia.

He also apparently received his $2m bonus on July 1st.
You wonder how much of this was known at the time of the trade, and at the end of June/beginning of July when the Caps and Canes were trading/signing guys.

I wonder why his agent was so insistent that this wasn't going to happen? Negotiating tactic?
