Yeah... I don't know who is calling him a "top 5 GM".
    That's certainly unwarranted.

But the team is trending up.
And the six first round picks he's made (Seider, Raymond.... Edvinsson, Cossa, Kasper, Danielson)... so far 2-for-2... Edvinsson is big D-man from 2021... patience there... they all take time when they are big... and Cossa, well G-development takes years if you do it right.

Way too critical to say "only two" when the 2021 guys are a big-D and G.
2022 8oa Kasper had damn fine AHL rookie year as two-way C.
2023 10oa Danielson was fine in WHL.
Can we let these guys have 3-years development before expecting them to hit NHL?!? C'mon - let's be fair there.

    There's no "miss" there (yet).
I don't see how anybody can criticize those.

And those are the key bits.

    Towards his UFA signings.
    Meh. Pretty bad.
But those - at least - expire.
And he hasn't done beyond 4yrs on any term with a "maybe" guy.

Chiarot was 4, Holl 3, Petry 2-4/4 (at discount)...
Ghost 1, Pat Kane 1, try them out. See if they fit in the lockerroom.
I mean... solid UFA D-men are pretty much not out there...
You gotta put something decent out there to win.

And Walman... well Walman does this...
(and then celebrates when it works out)...

    Feb.10 vs VAN

[These kinds of glory-be-me players are not fits. Good riddance Jake. Griddy-dances and social media followers and cherry-picking ain't fooling me. Good "cut" by Y. At cost, yes, but let's see if Edvinsson and A.Johansson can be defensemen.]

What about the second round picks he’s made? Thirds? Fourths? If a GM can only hit doubles on his top 10 picks and find literally nothing else, well.

As for Walman, yea we get it defensemen who aren’t the strongest defenders are personally offensive to you and you can’t look past your own biases on them to objectively evaluate their play. He’s obviously an NHL defenseman and the Mikeyhev trade that just went down makes Yzerman look even worse. He got walked by Grier on this one and that just is what it is.

Oh and Copp and Compher were both 5 year deals.

    Ouch man.
    Ouch.
But... was I wrong on Addison - or do you think he still has a long career ahead of him in the NHL?

Probably not going to make it, and that has literally zero bearing on Jake Walman.

I think my takes on if/when a defenseman is perceived, by the greater NHL, to not be a quality defender... has some merit.
I also put out there that I thought Jalen Chatfield was better D6 for Carolina than Tony DeAngelo.

We'll see how much career DeAngelo has left too.
I mean... you can call it a 'bias'... but I do identify guys that aren't cutting it as defenders and call them out.

    I don't see why it's an issue.
On a fantasy hockey chat board... don't we want to speculate on guys who may be out of league in 3-5 years?

I think this guy is probably an NHLer and doing the griddy when he scores sometimes probably doesn’t change that, but that’s just me.

Now, he’s not a top pairing defenseman, even though his coach chose to use him that way the last couple years (isn’t that the authority we’re supposed to appeal to or whatever?), and he’s going to continue to get exposed in way too much usage in SJ, but he’s very clearly a 4/5. He could easily preform similar to someone like Brandon Montour in proper deployment.

    I don't like JFresh.
Most analysts (incl.Dom) have an algorithm which has no effin clue how to separate one defender from their main partner (Seider).
We can bump this in two years and see how it aged though.
He wont' be playing along a Seider next year... so we'll see how those stats look!

The difference was one guy got the pp time and the other guy didn't. Detroit was actually performing better in the 1st quarter when they were using Walman in that role. Almost 50% of SH TOI? They must have been clearly of the opinion that he could not play defense responsibly.

This was my initial thought as well.

But....he must be up to something

The thing that doesn’t make sense, and is still puzzling people around the league, is why Yzerman effectively assigned negative trade value to Walman and gave up a second-round pick to move the defender.

It became even more puzzling when Ilya Mikheyev was traded last night by the Vancouver Canucks to the Chicago Blackhawks. Mikheyev was moved with a sweetener to Chicago, but the Canucks at least netted a fourth-round pick in return.

The other puzzling thing is that Yzerman apparently didn’t shop Walman around a ton. Based off some of my conversations and reading reports from others, there were multiple teams that would have been interested in actually trading something for Walman.

And if the Red Wings were truly desperate to be clear of Walman, they could have kept the second-round pick and simply waived him. The San Jose Sharks, I know for a fact, would have claimed him on waivers since they are first in the waiver order, like they did with Barclay Goodrow. In fact, I’ve heard San Jose was happily stunned when Yzerman simply didn’t ask for a return and offered a second-round pick sweetener.
    Anyways....

Jake Walman would currently lead all Red Wings defensemen in the following categories:

    - 5v5 Corsi +/-
    - 5v5 xGoal +/-
    - 5v5 Goal +/-
    - Goals
    - Assists
    - Points

He is doing this on a team that set records for how bad they were last year.

It shows where the priorities lie. Most of the focus is on fixing the immediate needs. There was no long-term vision about the potential cap problems coming up if they acquire too many high-paid veteran D. There was also not much vision about how to fix the cap situation. This was the path of least resistance.

It's the same reason you see former 1st round picks clear waivers while random nobodies will get claimed out of nowhere. If there's an immediate need, there's a claim. Otherwise they often times ignore. Even the rebuilding teams do this.

There's a lot of opportunity for a very good GM to hijack this and get ahead quickly.
