Matthews Next Contract Predictions

Here's a little game. Matthews' contract is going to be pretty enormous, the highest AAV in the league in all likelihood. Let's see who can get close to the full deal. Obviously there will be rumours out of guys like Friedman in the coming weeks about what it might be, so you get more credit the further out the prediction is. He can only extend starting this July 1st as his final year begins, and his no trade clause kicks in then. So if he signs elsewhere, he would have to be traded before then (unless he voluntarily waived). Or he walks to UFA in 2024.

Since he can only sign with Toronto, I will say he signs in Toronto for 13.333 AAV over 8 years and during those 8 years, they don’t win a single playoff round.

$13 for 8 years in Toronto. Doesn’t deserve to be the highest paid but it is what it is. David Copperfield clause in his contract for the playoffs. Leafs hoping he reappears in post season.

Length: 3-5. This takes Matthews to 29-31yrs old and sets up a bigger deal next. The cap is predicted to go to $92m in 2025-26. If it raises $4m each yr after that, when his deal is done the cap will be $100-108m
AAV: I think we see a signing based on percentage really. He'll be at 14%. $87.5m x 14.75% = $12.91m. Could even stick with the "original" 14.64% and be at $12.81m.

Going on this, his next deal would be roughly $14.75-$15.93aav.

If he didnt sign a max term deal last time, no way he's doing it this time either. He's not stupid, or at least his agent isn't. They can see the cap is going up in a couple years.

3yrs $13.5M in Toronto. Leafs last shot at winning with Matthews in the lineup before he takes a big money deal elsewhere. That will be his max term deal.
