Ya If I'm Matthews I wouldn't want to sign for any more then 5 years.

I know it's harder to build an NHL team vs NBA team, but I love the 4yr/5yr NBA contract length rules and I wish the NHL's 7yr/8yr rule was shorter.

I can't think of a UFA deal signed for 7yrs that was worth the deal. I know it's a pipe dream but my ideal contract rule change would be:
ELC for 3yrs. UFA with bird rights rule. Deals with new teams are 4yrs max, extensions 5yrs max.

Bird rights include a raise from their previous deal that doesn't count towards the cap. So in Toronto's case, they could sign Matthews to a deal that is a 25% raise that doesn't count towards the cap. Matthews gets paid $14,550,312.50 but his cap hit is $11,640,250 if he signs in Toronto. If he leaves for FA, he doesn't get that 25% max pay raise from another team.

Lots of flaws in it I'd assume. But it would make for a WAY more fun offseason, more moving parts, pushes teams to either be in or out. Players get to cash in on salary cap raises, dumps guys who are dead weight quicker.

If he didnt sign a max term deal last time, no way he's doing it this time either. He's not stupid, or at least his agent isn't. They can see the cap is going up in a couple years.

3yrs $13.5M in Toronto. Leafs last shot at winning with Matthews in the lineup before he takes a big money deal elsewhere. That will be his max term deal.

Not too far off in regards to term or dollars.
