if every avenue has been exhausted and ownership/nhl's plan B was to sell the team swiftly then the path of least resistance seems to be Houston .

Arizona can also talk with The Suns and try and retro-fit that arena to be an NHL arena. The issue is the viewing angles would likely be similar to when the Islanders went to Brooklyn.

It's a quicker solution than relocating, but it's also a cheaper solution than relocating. But also makes the league a lot less money.

    Amazing news!
And good for the people of Tempe to know what a scumbag that owner is.
Like Atlanta, Arizona probably deserved better... but has had nothing but crappy ownership.

Including the NHL for a while since it was so important to keep the team in Arizona. Embarrassing.

Do you think the NHL imposes a deadline for the team to be relocated?

I know the Draft is really close and free agency,
but would the NHL not benefit from having the new ownership group in place before free agency?>

This won't be a quick process. And nothing says there will be a new ownership group.

If we take anything from the Thrashers relocation, they were sold to True North on May 20th, 2011 to relocate to Winnipeg. The league would deny the relocation rumours (that's something to note). May 31st 2011 the True North group announced the completion of the deal to purchase the Thrashers. June 21st, 2011 they announced their intention to move to MTS Centre in Winnipeg. The team were part of the NHL in 2011.

So in the Thrashers/Jets situation, they had an arena ready to go. The major locations that are rumoured in on Arizona don't have an arena I don't think.

I think I read somewhere that Houston does have an NHL ready arena.

I think hockey can work in Phoenix. I don’t think the Coyotes can. Someone tweeted it last night and I agree, I could see Phoenix being a future expansion target. But this team needs to move, the market needs a complete reset, with stable ownership who put a new rink in a smart location somewhere down the line. Houston, Salt Lake, and Kansas City are all viable locations you could move a team to today. It’s not going to be an Eastern Canada relocation.

There's also points that Dreger said that expanding the NHL into Houston would make more money than moving a team to Houston. I don't know how, but there's that.

Utah owner is likely pushing hard to get Arizona. He said in April that a team to Utah is in motion. He met with Bettman in March after an NBA board of governors meeting. He was in on the Penguins in 2021. Utah is wanting to host the 2030 winter olympics, so they will build a new Arena based off that. (it's Japan, Sweden, Utah and maybe Switzerland as the opponents). The decision to announce the host has been delayed and likely will be made in 2024.

The arena that hosts the Rockets used to host the Houston Aeros of the AHL until 2013. So I guess they can run a team there. My mistake.

Said this in the other thread (maybe they should be merged?) but Houston, Salt Lake, and Kansas City all have NHL ready rinks that a team could move to today. Houston also has an ownership group that has shown interest. I do not know the ownership situations of KC and SL. Quebec also has an NHL ready building and ownership group but I do not think the Coyotes are moving to Eastern Canada.

The Salt Lake arena is a 12,000 ECHL arena. That's not a strong portion of the bid, but it is a nice stop gap until the 2030 winter olypmics arena is made.

Vivint arena has seating for 14,000 plus a ton of luxury boxes and an ownership group in place who is interested in a hockey team. Salt Lake is firmly on the list of “you can relocate there today”.

^I also totally forgot Vivint held preseason games between the LAK and Vegas...seems very "test the waters" type of move.
