Jack Hughes was last year before he was even breaking out- i gave up Evander Kane Devon toews and one other player-bertuzzi? This board was split with half the comments saying it was brilliant but risky the other half saying it was just plain stupid on my part. Saying it was "especially bad" just shows me the lengths hes gonna go to get his point accross.

I'm very tempted to include his litany of BS trades here but then this devolves into a he said he said thing and I actually believe this trade stands on its own merit. So ill skip over that for now...

Blackwood and xhekaj is absolutely defensible- thank you! Looking at it today- do I like my side? Sure I do- im rebuilding- and I've got "potentially" the bpa. BUT this whole deal came together because the team just could NOT find another goalie- we even put this trade on hold for like two months- goalies are worth a shhhh-ton in this league. Yes blackwood done in NJ i agree with that. But is he done as a goalie? History says not so fast. Former first roundera have like a 50% chance of succeeding and the reason is they get chance after chance on team after team. Its not a strong leap of logic to think blackwood- an early 2nd round pick, who started late (12!!), and was handled with kids gloves by the organization tight up until this year- will get that exact treatment. Maybe he makes it maybe he doesn't but he's a very skilled goalie who WILL get more legitimate chances. Whats worse is I literally did pay a premium for blackwood when I got him!! I literally put my money where my mouth is.

    I'm responding for two reasons:

I respect the GM i made a deal with and I think he did fine in this trade. Hes retooling over the short term and you have to take some risks if you're going that route. He also has two very old goalies and just traded his only premier defensemen. Blackwood still has a solid chance of at least becoming a starter somewhere (gold) and while I'm doubting wifi becomes a superstar the fact is that even if he didn't improve at all- hes already got value as a 3rd or 4th dman on most teams on this league! And I do think he has some upside. Now we get to slaf- i love slaf! I'm happy hea on my team - there i said it! BUT he's shown an early penchant for injury, he's exceptionally sized which can double a prospects wait time, hes got an extremely erratic scoring resume for a 1st oa, and lastly I hate to say it but mtl has a spotty track record developing supposed stars. If he works out you're looking a 2-3 years minimum- probably more. Not only is this not a "league wrecker" I think a team retooling on the fly has every right to make this sort of trade. OPs post is disrespectful to that owner too- hes a very capable gm with a plan in place- a risky plan but a plan- his plan. OP is well aware that im rebuilding over the long haul and would LOVE to take a chance on a player like this.

The second is that this is 100% a response to mynpost about his potentially damaging trades. This was easier than saying "hey man I didn't appreciate that dobbernpost" or even "I see what you were trying to say but here's why I think you were wrong". The problem is my post had merit and if I offended him I was prepared to have that conversation and say why I felt at least considering the fallout was important. This doesn't and it never did. This was an awful lot of time and effort put into something where the sole purpose was to antagonize me. I'm happy to move forward without engaging and let my record do the talking.

    Things took an unexpected turn...

I'd lean toward no collusion and no farming being done yet. I would keep an eye on the trades being made and especially the multiplayer deals for upgrades. Done too many times by the same managers and the upgrades always going in the same direction - you'll have a farming issue in the end, even if not intended by either party.

I'd also not take too much offense at this thread since no one was called out by the OP who put forth a pretty good scenario and a valid question.

    Its completely disengenuos:

    - The return for Hughes was more than adequate and it was during his second year of mediocrity.
    - I DID make a similar trade for Lafreniere and so far am losing substantially.
    - Hes saying I "stole" assets from this poor gm while oitting that he literally just traded Evander Kane from this same gm for peanuts- the best piece (by a wide margin) in that return was Lettermaki.

    Consider this:

The pieces I gave back in my supposed "league ruiner" trade for an unproven Slafkovsy will almost certainly outperform the pieces he gave for Evander Kane a 40+ goal scorers in his prime.

Call this post whatever you want but leave me out of it. It got the reaction he wanted and now we ove forward...

Thank you everyone for thoughtful and informative responses.

Obviously the GM in question (whom I took effort to provide anonymity for) ended up engaging in a big way here so it kind of changes it all up a bit.

I think it's important to be able to use a forum like this, which is an excellent resource for fantasy hockey GMs, to better our decision making process for league matters. Clearly though this was the wrong choice for this scenario and I should have realized that. Now the last thing I want is for this to become some sort of squabble, so I will choose my words carefully.

I am certain that collusion is not an issue here. I simply wanted to express my thoughts and get some extra opinions on what to do when one team is acquiring top young talent at lower (but fair) prices from the same team over and over again. Again, no collusion, nothing malicious. Fighting Emu, you brought up my trade with this GM as well (I acquired Evander Kane for Lekkerimaki, Durzi, Garand, Protas, Sprong, Clang, and two third round picks in the upcoming draft). Perhaps I don't see this trade accurately (I see it as a fair quality for quantity trade) and instead am blind to how I am doing the same thing I expressed concern over. It is hard to see ones own reality as clearly as we see others.

Either way the point stands. A GM is in a rut and hasn't made the playoffs in well over a decade. They have acquired many top picks and dealt them away. One GM in particular has been engaging in these deals. Nobody is a villain in this situation- it is fantasy hockey- we are supposed to better our teams- but I wanted to come here to explore options and receive feedback and certainly that process began nicely.

Thank you again all for your help and time. Thank you Fighting Emu for being a spirited member of the league in question.

Your Kane trade seems like an overpay on your part to me. Be patient. We had one of those guys in my league who was always getting fleeced in trades (again, all perception). He’s slowly figured it out and has a top 3 team this year. And sometimes having friends who are bad at fantasy hockey comes with the territory.

I've written and rewritten this response about three times but ultimately I deleted it cause it was too adversarial and I trying to put this to bed.

The Kane trade was bad- when broken down with context it quickly becomes that many of those pieces are complete hail marys (and thats when they're not actively hurting your roster)- more importantly it sets a precedent of sending out an offer that the same gm would never accept if roles were reversed. Those trades are just bunk at this point in our collective learning curve and I honestly believe that warranted a real conversation.

But this post was easier apparently. So I'm done lol! Framing my trade this way doesn't really warrant a response tbh- it stands.on its own merit. Thanks for those people who weighed in honestly...

Yet you’ve replied 6 times and written far more than anyone else who has replied.

I also find it ironic that you, who has spent an amazing amount of time on this forum trying to support futures for established players trade ideas as aiding your perpetual rebuild, would try to spin this Kane trade as being made for “Hail Marys”. That’s impressive.

The most fascinating part about this thread to me is that we're calling Evander Kane a 40+ goal scorer in his prime? Is that right?

He was slinging $100s on the casino floors in Vegas in his prime. This is Evander, not Patrick. Sorry but he ain't ever hitting 40.

Honestly if there's a GM who sucks year in and year out, I'd just gently encourage them to run trades by another GM or two for thoughts before they finalize. Maybe they could even start posting offers on the league forum, and say "does anyone want to beat this offer?". Then if no one does after a few days, it must be a decent one and could be accepted then. Give them some tools to make better decisions. I find after doing this a few times, bad GM's usually figure it out.

Kane is 31 years old and has a career high of 30 goals in his NHL career. He hit exactly 30 in 2011/12 and in 2018/19. He also has a career high of 57 points.
Kane has 59 points over the past 2 seasons. Sean Durzi, a 24 year old dman, has 61 points over the past 2 seasons.

The team that acquired Evander Kane in this deal lost the trade by a large, large, large amount.

Honestly I don’t see how the Kane deal was unfair. I mean he threw like 7 assets at him Lekkerimaki being a pretty nice piece and same with Durzi. Sprong has provided sneaky depth scoring while Protas could be a long wait he could be worth the wait. Goalies are impossible. Picks can be good if used right. Personally when people throw piles of players at me I usually decline because id personally rather have quality, but the bottom feeder certainly did not get fleeced by any means. Durzi and Lekkerimaki while it wouldn’t probably move me to trade Kane if I owned him, is a nice tandem.
