interesting to me that many of the initial reactions from both fanbases are negative.
there's probably a 60-40 split of isles fans that want lou gone (for his cumulative isles trade/draft record) and a rebuild initiated that included this year's #1 pick and the likes of Raty, Dufour, Bolduc, etc
It will take me a few days to digest it but I always learn to love whoever comes into the isles family. Ledecky (minority owner but pretty much the mouthpiece for the majority owner malkin)will roll out the red carpet for Horvat and his family and undoubtedly green light whatever Lou and Bo agree to (my guess, 8.5 x 8 )

Pageau for 2020 1st (Ridly Greig), 2020 2nd (Roni Hirvonen), 2022 3rd (Quinn Finley)
Lamoriello has been with the organization since May 2018.He has drafted the following players who have played an NHL game:
- Oliver Wahlstrom (161)
- Noah Dobson (208)
- Aatu Raty (12)
- William Dufor (1)
- Simon Holmstrom (24)
- Samuel Bolduc (4)
How much influence do we think he had in the Wahlstrom/Dobson picks having entered the organization in May, and becoming the GM in June? The team has had success because of Barry Trotz, not because of the moves they made in my eyes.
As for this trade, I'll hold my full evaluation on it until the day after trade deadline. Cause I don't think it's great for Vancouver, but I also don't quite get the idea for NYI. I guess they want to move Barzal to the wing? Which like, you just paid Barzal $9m for 8yrs to be your center.

This might be more than just devil's advocate. This could just be what was going on. Horvat has no reason to not ask for the moon now. He'll be a UFA soon and can go wherever he wants. If a team wants to trade for him, he owes them nothing. He's easily gonna get 7.5mil at least even without the bump from this year's production. No reason for him no to ask for one million plus more at this point. And I'm sure he was doing that during negotiations.
These deals for players in contract years where we know 100% that player isn't resigning have a tendency of no going so well for the team trading said player. Thomas Vanek. Taylor Hall. The longer you wait, the less you get for them. The Canucks did pretty well here, plus considering how teams were going to pay for career production, no this year's production. So between that and the amount he's probably asking for they were in a tough spot and got a nice haul. The first rounder should be in a good spot - either the Islanders just miss the players this year but better than 12th worst, or next year when they're even worse than this year. There is the odd chance that they better down the stretch with Horvat, but I'd probably take 20th overall this year over 10ish next year. Raty should be a good NHLer. So all things considered they did well.
GET WELL SOON, DOBBER.
Ask the Flames how it goes on return for a player when you let them talk to other teams…

Hey listen I love Horvat and would have wanted to keep him. I would want him over Miller but that ship already sailed. Based on what I feel Bo Horvat is based on his career production and age, I wouldn't of wanted the Canucks to sign him for more than 7-7.5 per year. They probably could of got him for even less last offseason if they concentrated on Horvat instead of Miller but again that's the past.
If we had to pay 8 million + to him, I honestly wouldn't of wanted him at this price. Not that he was signing with us to begin with. His best season prior to this year was 31 goals. In my opinion watching him he's a good but great second line center who can score 25-30 goals and 60-65 points. Outside the odd career year. We got a younger middle six forwards, a decent prospect center and a 1st round pick, that although has no chance at a lottery selection could bring us a nice blue chip D prospect. I wanted more for Bo but it's not a bad haul.

I had a friend describe this trade as a bloop single for the NYI and a hard single for the Canucks. Which I think is surprisingly accurate.

That’s brilliant.
If the Isles miss the playoffs that Canucks line drive single gets by the outfielder and the guy slides into third for a triple.
If Isles make playoffs , the bloop single gets stretched out for a double, and if Horvat re-signs long term for less than $8m per the guy takes advantage of a loose ball into 2nd and takes 3rd.

Thinking about it more this trade is pretty bad for both teams which certainly makes it funnier.
Lou clearly thinks his team is a contender. This allows the Isles to move Barzal to the wing and make Horvat #1C. Barzal is not a great C (36 FO%)
If the Canucks moved Horvat to say Boston - that 1st is #25-32. This could be #13-16 < That's a two tiers in this trade.
Raty's a wildcard. will he become more than a tweener 2nd/3rd liner?
There's a reason he dropped from top 3 candidate to 2nd rounder.
Beauvillier should be built up in Feb and traded for another asset. he's the same age as Horvat & half the player. move him for a 3rd.
Had they waited, contenders would have paid more. it's an okay deal. but value was lost by Van.
As long as the Isles re-sign Horvat this is a win for them.
It'll be a meh for Van unless Raty turns into a legit top 6 and they hit hard with that 1st

Raty's issues are personality and defensive woes.
Fits perfect in the Canucks system.
