Default Oilers in Contact with Sharks

Elliotte Friedman said that the Oilers and sharks had legit conversations about Erik Karlsson in the recent months.

Now I'd have to believe Barrie would be involved somehow. So I'd guess:
    Barrie ($4.5m), Puljujarvi ($3m), Broberg ($0.863333m), 2 1sts ($8.363m total)

    for

Karlsson. $11.5m with 18% retained would be $9.43m, so Edmonton's cap would raise 1.067m. And Capfriendly has their Trade Deadline Cap Projection at $2.4m so I'd think it would work out. But I can't say for sure with E.Kane potentially back tonight.

I think it's not a good idea for Edmonton to go out and try and add another $9m+ d-man when you already need to navigate Nurse's ridiculous deal.

If this is true, (and I've heard the "rumors" of this as well), I think this is just Ken Holland opening all doors and looking for something and doing his due diligence. I dont think this is a trade he would actually do but who the hell knows.

I think the Oilers need to do whatever it takes to get better every year McDavid and Drasatil are in their prime but I don't think Karlesson's the right target. A guy like Jakob Chychrun even if the price is two 1sts would make more sense for the Oilers.

Holland always says he does this because it's his job to inquire. I have no doubt Holland has tried to determine what it would cost and what the Sharks would retain, but I don't think Holland will actually go get Karlsson.

I dont want to say he doesn't fill the need because really, most of the Oilers D have underperformed this year. By saying he doesn't fill a need, the greater need of the Oilers is a left handed Dman who can play in their top 4. If the Oilers are going to put out assets like their 1st round pick, it needs to help fill voids. The Oilers have three "good" right handed Dmen already in Ceci, Bouchard and Barrie. While upgrading Barrie wouldn't be a bad thing, spending your best assets to do so doesn't make much sense. This trade would also, most likely, impeded the progression of Bouchard as the Oilers top PP guy, which I dont think is something Holland has interest in doing either.

I would much rather see them go out and invest in Chychrun or even someone like Provorov, who's name is churning on the trade blocks of the pundits, before looking at someone like Erik Karlsson but I am just an armchair GM.

If the team had a better structure in their defensive system, I would say upgrade the left side, while pushing Barrie out to promote Bouchard to his role is what they should be doing. But, I don't think Bouchard can be truly an upgrade on RHD2 right now.

I also think out of anyone on SJS that the Oilers could use would be Meier to help up front with a balanced lineup. Him and Kane with RNH would be a tough line to matchup against with McDavid/Drai/Hyman taking your top shutdown line out of the equation.

I also think every team should be talking to SJS about Meier though.

As the last poolparty owner I would love this. Not a lot of help offensively I guess but at least I think he's a clear top six. I'm assuming meier is moved as well when I'm writing this...

If I were Holland, I'd land Klingberg. Sure he's been the pits this year, but everyone in Anaheim has been. I also believe he's been deployed improperly. Cheap with good upside and their not saddled with a horrendous contract.

Cheap? He's making $7M this year against the cap and a pending UFA.

The way Karlsson is playing, this would be great trade for Edmonton. The 3 guys they're giving up, won't help them win a cup this year or next. With Erik, they become a favorite.

Cheap meaning, next to nothing going back, and Anaheim retaining a good chunk of his salary. If it doesn't wok out, they walk away. Compared to the fortune they'll pay for and to Karlsson, and their saddled to him for another four years.

Im nervous about the Meier move. I like what hes doing now and don't want his role to change. Maybe he's a rockstar in NJ or wherever; it would make sense. But things are also pretty good as more or less The Guy in SJ. For instance, if he ends up on a team like NYR that would concern me greatly re his role. Even though the team that gets him will be paying big bucks to keep him.

Sorry to derail; I would love EK to get moved before the deadline. It's a less than 50/50 shot though with the cap ramifications, but I think with the way he is playing there is always a chance some GM figures it out.
