Basically its the expected top players of the tournament.

You can only pick one of them.

So it is used to provide some diversity as you only get to pick one of the captains.

So instead of being able to pick Bedard, Cooley AND Bystedt at last years world juniors, you could only pick one of those three.

I don't think Seamus Casey is captain material. Waste of a spot as if someone will take an American dman as their captain, almost everyone will choose hutson. If someone wants Casey, that should come from a regular D spot.
I agree with the other dmen listed. Asp for sure, and I think both luneau and mateychuk are evenly matched that they should both be. No other dman in the tourney really stands out.
Up front, I think will Smith has to be a captain. And I'd take ostlund the center over lekkerimaki the winger. Helenius as a 2024 draftee i dont think needs to be in there. I'd rather have another American like snuggerud, Perrault,, Leonard, or geekie from Canada, or lekkerimaki/ohgren from Sweden. We dont need to have Finnish captain. Not a fan of mysak being one either.

I don’t think we need more than 4 captains per position.

do we start a debate whether we eliminate captains entirely?

I wouldn't object to that. If theres concerns about lack of variance in picks I guess you could add a couple extra slots? Fine either way

Nah, captains are important. This year's field is a bit fallow but it's an important strategy maker in a lot of years. Even this year just having to pick only one of the surefire top 3 defensemen will be a big differentiator.

Agreed we definitely need captains, but I also would be fine with those saying we need less captains. So...

    Defence: Luneau, Mateychuk, Hutson, Sandin-Pelikka
Forwards: Savoie, Gauthier, Smith, Ostlund, Kulich

If you only want 4 captains then take out Kulich. Might wind up being the best player in the tourament, but the Czechs could also wind up losing in the quarterfinals and that's 2 games less of points for Kulich.

Either way, whatever decision is made I'm looking forward!

I was just thinking that I would rather lose the pool because I didn't pick the right depth players as opposed to not picking the right captain.

I want to win the pool because I picked the correct winger that stuck on Canada's first line, or the D-man that wins out the 1st powerplay unit for Finland.

As opposed to having to decide between the captains and ending up choosing the one that gets 14 points as opposed to the one that gets 9 points.
Both are still top 10 scorers in the whole tourney but you can only have one.

With all that said, I doubt there is likely enough support to expand the rosters and eliminate the captains.

    So how about this:

    Forwards - Savoie, Lekkerimaki, Gauthier

    Defenese - Mateychuk, Sandin-Pellikka, Hutson

I think 3 D -c captains is sufficeint, is 3 forward captains sufficient?

    My vote:

F: Savoie, Gauthier, Smith, Kulich, and one of the SWE boys.
    D:
    Mateychuk, Sandin-Pellikka, Hutson

Three D seems like enough, and I don't think a single team takes Luneau if he's included in the pack here.
I think we need a slightly bigger set of Fs (five), and the four here plus one of Ostlund/Lekkerimakki seems to make sense to find the right balance for what this contest has typically been.

    Thanks, EB.

I see a consensus forming around these picks for Captains.

My sense was to go with Lekkerimaki as the Swede because he's a 1st round prospect for a Canadian team so slightly higher profile and his numbers in the SHL are the best of the bunch. Ostlund's right there though. He went one pick after Lekkerimaki, is part of that well known Djurgardens line from their draft year, also has good numbers in the SHL and scored the same number of points (4) as Lekkerimaki in last year's tournament. I think both are auto play for folks if not a captain, so putting one in to muddy the pool makes sense. Don't care which, but my lean is Lekkerimaki.
