Welp, I feel like it's a right of passage to put yourself up for possible shaming if you trade for/away McDavid. I ended up dealing away McKinnon/Vasi/Seider/Murray to get McDavid/Jarry/DeAngelo/Dubois. It's a keep-4 league where you can keep 1 center, 1 wing, 1 D, and 1 goalie. Keeper prices revert to Yahoo default every 3 seasons. Auction keeper prices were :

MacKinnon $80 - McDavid $100
Vasilevsky $75 - Jarry $2
Seider $1 - DeAngelo $1
Murray $6 - Dubois $1

So you update Mackinnon to McDavid, that's a plus.

You downgraded Vas to which goalie you decide to keep but you're clearly not hurting there right now.

Hurts to lose Seider but you're not keeping him over Makar anyway so that's fine and getting DeAngelo softens the blow. Murray and Dubois don't move the needle much for me but you didn't need Murray at all so it was good to trade him.

I like it for you! In this very limited keeper format, having McDavid is huge as a ton of elite players will still be available at the draft.

This is a fabulous deal in a auction keeper, given the costs:

MacKinnon $80 - McDavid $100
This is reasonable, as you get the better player at an increased price. In most leagues, McDavid isn't 25% more valuable than MacKinnon, but auctions skew the elite players upwards. I'd be willing to throw McDavid back in if you have a good cheap C keeper, and you might.

Vasilevsky $75 - Jarry $2
This is the huge win in the deal. That keeper cost differential is absolute the key. You now have 3 goalies who are cheap solid keepers, I'd expect peopple to be interested inone of them in the off-season if you can trade then, or at the deadline if not.

Seider $1 - DeAngelo $1
League is multicategory, and this is a downgrade. How much Makar costs is the big question as to whether either could be keepers.

Murray $6 - Dubois $1
I'd rather have DuBois than Murray, as there are no ratios for Dubois to implode.

Thank you all for the very detailed responses, rep given. Makar would cost $65 to keep so I will be keeping Dougie instead as he's $1. Hischier would also be a $1 keeper but if I can hand onto McDavid for one more season at $100 his value would then drop to Yahoo default going forward which I imagine will be in the $55-$60 range and I doubt he'd ever go that cheap in our open auction. I can also keep Timo Meier at $1 so even though the $100 tag on McDavid will sting next season, I can pair him with $1 Meier/Hamilton and my choice of a $1-$2 goalie pick of Ullmark/Jarry/Vanecek.

Makar would be $65 for the next 2 seasons after this one and then drop to whatever the Yahoo default auction value would be for him which changes every season. This year they had him earmarked at $48 default but he got bid up to $65.Our total team budget is $260. As tempted as I am to hang onto McDavid/Makar, using up $165 on just 2 players seems irresponsible.

I agree with this. I've never played an auction hockey league, but that sort of league is won with value contracts. If one year of McDavid at $100 means you get him at a decent value after that, it makes sense.
