Chris Johnston on Insider Trading says that it is not a pressing issue for Sharks GM Mike Grier but if a team called about Erik Karlsson he would be open to listening.
It would appear that fantasy GMs are the only ones looking at selling high on Erik Karlsson. Karlsson has full control of this situation as he's got a full NMC and four more years left after this season so he isnt going anywhere he doesn't want.

$40m of his $53m signing bonus has been paid off, and he's "only" owed less than $41m of his $92m deal over the next 4+yrs.

I doubt EK gets moved anytime soon, but if SJS is willing to retain $3m would someone out there jump at EK at $8.5m aav and spending only roughly $7m a yr on him? With that full NMC the team acquiring him would likely not be spending a whole lot to get him, just taking on that contract.

Again, I'd be shocked if someone out there got him, but maybe Ottawa would be open to getting him back lol.

That's what I was thinking, a contending team that isn't a cap team. Ottawa wouldn't qualify this year but there could be a fit. San Jose is willing to retain, there might be a gm desperate enough to make it work especially if say the Sharks took back a problem contract in the deal.

very risky tho...he has been pretty bad by his standards for last few years and suddenly he has this surge....i doubt it lasts for 4 years...If SJ eats 50% then maybe someone will take a chance....as a winning team (and im assume it would be only way he waves) i would not want 8 mil on the books for Karlsson.

Kind of funny to me that this qualifies as an insider scoop. The more newsworthy item is how coy Greer is trying to be about it. Of course the Sharks are interested in moving him. They might as well staple homemade "for sale" signs with EK's picture on it to telephone poles around various NHL cities.

San Jose has to be dying to get that salary off the books. But as stated above, the dance partners who can take him on, or would want to, are very limited.

I'm struggling to find a fit. Seattle? They don't have much offensive D and they have cap space. They're not really contending though, so it's easier to see that move for them in a couple of years than now.

As strange as it sounds, Ottawa would be a good fit.

    Here's my trade thought:

to SJ: RH-Filip Hronek ($4.4m thru 2024, RFA) + Filip Zadina ($1.8m, RFA) + retain 50% (or less) of Karlsson cap ($5.75m)
to DET: RH-Erik Karlsson ($5.75m, or more, cap hit thru 2027)
Draft Picks & Retain Amount can be tweaked... if needed for balance... but I think this is good player-point, both teams.

SJ gets two non-Yzerman era young Wings.
DET gets a RH-Swede to play with LH-Edvinsson, 2nd pairing DET, behind Chiarot(LH)-Seider(RH).

I don't know. They are building solidly, and Yzerman has a pretty solid rep. It makes sense not to want to go there weather wise, but hockey wise? Makes a decent amount of sense.

Wherever he would go, he'd likely get a big pay raise from the taxes as a nice little sweetener going forward. With most of his signing bonus dolled out already, the salary is the major taxed part now.

I know it's not going to matter, but anyone have any idea about retained salary being taxed? If Karlsson is in Florida (example) and his salary is 50% retained, is his 50% of his salary taxed like he's in SJS still?

    re: NOT Detroit...

Erik Karlsson's wife is from Ottawa.
And they have two kids. (2nd... boy... was born very recently: February 2022... that's when parenting starts to be a LOT for one parent... even with [likely hired] help)

Any good man should be very interested in moving closer to his wife's support network.
What do I know though? I only correctly predicted Claude Giroux would sign with Ottawa for similar reasons.
Detroit/Toronto/Buffalo/Ottawa/Montreal: that's the wheelhouse for "close enough" to her world.
He'd be interested in Detroit if SJ/agent tells him they're inquiring.

Friedman just threw out the Panthers as a potential fit at the Leafs intermission tonight but he's not sure how it would fit cap wise.

That's definitely a team that would try to do it. Team is all in and shown the lengths they'll go to get a player.
