Your boat was made from refurbished Zunes, that's why you're stranded on the island.

I had a group of 6 buddies in HS, myself and 5 other guys.
There was this one discussion where they all "laughed me under the table"... and it was this:

You are on a deserted island - would you rather have:
    a) The complete works of U2, or
    b) The complete works of ACDC
I was outvoted 5-1... but I still holdfast that my group is better... and that the other isn't aging well.

Now... to be boring... I could pick my favourite 8 songs of all-time, but an engineer would think about this logically.

If the island is deserted - it's just me.
This means language will die and I'd rather have melody and peace.
I don't want to go all crazy like Darryl in a prison cell in Walking Dead being forced to listen to the same song lyrics over and over.

    So... give me:

    1. Blue Danube Waltz - Strauss
    2. Marriage of Figaro - Mozart
    3. Clair de lune - Debussy
    4. Gymnopedie - Satie
    5. Morning Mood - Grieg
    6. Primavera - Einaudi
    7. Overture No. 3 - Bach
    8. Bluebird - Alexis Ffrench (if you haven't heard this modern one... queue it up, good shit to mellow out on)

    Book:
20,000 Leagues Under the Seas - Verne (I haven't read it... I'd want something new... and it would fit and might keep me sea-sharp. My "luxury item" is gonna get more use than the book anyways.)

Luxury Item (assuming that I have some form of tools & base things for food/water/shelter):
Probably a loaded, working gaming device system, solar-powered. Good to keep the brain sharp and entertained: Nintendo Switch or PS#, something like that.
And... if there's some Grand Theft Auto or similar game... I'd have a lot of cool song tracks already listed above! *boom. P7 ftw*

    (fun, thanks)
your book should be "how to tie a noose with coconut threads" cause listening to that over and over will end you. lol... of course j/k

    haha... probably!
One volume of GTA on my pre-loaded gaming system though... I'll have a good collection of rock to listen to!
My wife used to come downstairs on Saturdays (many, many years ago) listening to me blare the Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas driving music.

GTA-V has over 500 songs alone!

    1. The Bleeding Heart Show - The New Pornographers
    2. Hey Jude - Beatles
    3. Desolation Row - Bob Dylan
    4. Unless it's Kicks - Okkervil River
    5. If I Were a Bell - Miles Davis Quintet
    6. Blue Train - John Coltrane
    7. Ninth Symphony - Ludvig Van Beethoven
    8. New World Symphony - Antonin Dvorak

Looking for songs that are longer and dense which can reveal new things upon further listening and generally uplifting, at least for me.

I'm on with P7 with the no-lyrics songs. I listen to music at work constantly, but I listen to instrumental versions of songs a lot due to typing a bunch, so the lack of lyrics helps

1.) A Fifth of Beethoven by Walter Murphy
2.) Buried Alive in the Blues by Janis Joplin
3.) Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group
4.) Jessica by Allman Brothers Band
    5.) Fur Elise by Beethoven
6.) The Four Seasons by Vivaldi
7.) The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss
8.) Orff: Carmina Burana. If music just starts going off out of nowhere once the time is right, this song has to be on everyone's list. If I'm in a stand off with a boar, and we're circling about to attack and this song comes on for me, I'm winning. Or dying in an epic fashion and the boar is the main character in this story.

Book - A Piano Music Book

Luxury Item - A piano that never goes out of tune or breaks.

    In no particular order:

    No Rain - Blind Melon
    Yellow - Coldplay
American Pie (Full length version) - Don Mclean
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol (Wedding song)
Swing Life Away - Rise Against
Tragedy + Time - Rise Against
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights - Meatloaf
    It's Been a While - Staind

Book would be Wise Man's Fear by Pat Rothfuss (Book #2 in the Kingkiller series)
That or some mega encyclopedia on edible/poisonous flora & fauna.

Luxury item: A shit-ton of paper. I can find stuff to write with, and being able to write, make notes, track days, etc I think would be invalable and help keep me sane. Also can burn the odd page that I've used up to help start fires.

(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
    Cowgirl - Underworld

Zombie Eaters - Faith No More
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode

    Book:

If allowed a series: The Dark Tower - Stephen King
If a single book: The Stand - Stephen King

    Luxury:

    An unlimited supply of Staropramen.

Without words your mind will go crazy with no one else talking to you, but yourself! Besides you'll have more then just the one song.

I listen to podcasts and songs all the time at work. Not sure how words affect anything :S
Is that Carl Orff - O fortuna? Epic piece. Definitely part of my workout playlist.

I still need to debate mine out... It all hinges on what my luxury item is.
If I could get internet then be a computer... but I doubt you would be allowed to say it would have internet.
(This would also make picking 8 songs moot)
So I would want an always stocked, with your favourite food and beverages, fridge. Otherwise most your whole time would be spent dealing with securing food which could be scarce.

I think you'll go crazy regardless lol.

And I find it easier to focus when I'm listening to something that doesn't have words going on. I can keep a flow going and not accidently start typing words I'm hearing. Bit of a sidetrack but I'm either listening to the words in the songs, or I'm just listening to the noise of the instruments. I just lack the ability to process a song lyric, and type my thoughts consistently. Pretty sure it's proven that the human brain can not listen and process 2 separate conversations at the same time. You can switch between each one easily and your brain connects the dots, but you cant simultaneously listen to 2 things.

But that's all beside the point, it was more for the "I listen to songs without words at work, so I enjoy them".

I would counter that teasing one's self with hope that doesn't come would be the thing that could make one go crazy.
Suggesting that the lyrics in songs will replace verbal interaction with other humans is... IDK... not something that seems like it would run well.

If one is on a deserted island, they need to completely move on to a system where they are living and accepting of their current situation.
There's no point in speaking or making ANY sound any longer.

    Monks do this just fine.
My lyric-less songs shift me into monk status sooner than others and my zen-shift is going to surely help me outlast the rest of y'all.
Monks are know for living long boss lives with minimal items... and that's the set-up here!!!

(btw - I'm sure the tone of this post above will come across way more serious than I intend. Add smiley faces and exclamation marks as needed to represent a more fun-style of discussion... or pretend "Alexa" is saying my words. Her tone is great! LOL.)

    Counter to myself:
I think the point of the exercise from the media outlet is just a fun spin on "Which 8 songs could you listen to over & over & over again?"
In which case... I'm still picking 8 lyric-less songs.

For shits & giggles though, here are 8 favourites I put on randomly a lot, so I guess I really like these:

    1. Mr. Brightside - The Killers
    2. South Tacoma Way - Neko Case
    3. Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
    4. Both Sides Now - the cover version of Joni Mitchell's song but from recent movie CODA
    5. Dog Days are Over - Florence and the Machine
    6. Long Time Running - Tragically Hip
    7. Talk to Me - Stevie Nicks
    8. Baba O'Riley - The Who

Ya, I'd need words. I enjoy singing, and taking my guitar as my luxury item would allow me to play and sing along with my songs selected. Not sure how I didnt put a Beatles tune on my list, but whatever. Hard to narrow it down to just eight songs.
